六、阅读理解(共15小题;共30分)
A
My
father
was
a
foreman
of
a
sugar-cane
plantation
(甘蔗种植园)
in
Rio
Piedras,
Puerto
Rico.
My
first
job
was
to
drive
the
oxen
that
ploughed(耕)
the
cane
fields.
I
would
walk
behind
an
ox(牛),
guiding
him
with
a
broomstick.
For
$1
a
day,
I
worked
eight
hours
straight,
with
no
food
breaks.
It
was
very
tedious
work,
but
it
prepared
me
for
life
and
taught
me
many
lasting
lessons.
Because
the
plantation
owners
were
always
watching
us,
I
had
to
be
on
time
every
day
and
work
as
hard
as
I
could.
I've
never
been
late
for
any
job.
I
also
learned
about
being
respectful
and
faithful
to
the
people
you
work
for.
More
important,
I
earned
my
pay;
it
never
entered
my
mind
to
say
I
was
sick
just
because
I
didn't
want
to
work.
I
was
only
six
years
old,
but
I
was
doing
a
man's
job.
Our
family
needed
every
dollar
we
could
make
because
my
father
never
earned
more
than
$18
a
week.
Our
home
was
a
three-room
wood
shack
with
a
dirty
floor
and
no
toilet.
Nothing
made
me
prouder
than
bringing
home
money
to
help
my
mother,
father,
two
brothers
and
three
sisters.
This
gave
me
self-esteem(自尊心),
one
of
the
most
important
things
a
person
can
have.
When
I
was
seven,
I
got
work
at
a
golf
course
(高尔夫球场)
near
our
house.
My
job
was
to
stand
down
the
fairway(球道)
and
spot
the
balls
as
they
landed,
so
the
golfers
could
find
them.
Losing
a
ball
meant
you
were
fired,
so
I
never
missed
one.
Some
nights
I
would
lie
in
bed
and
dreamt
of
making
thousands
of
dollars
by
playing
golf
and
being
able
to
buy
a
bicycle.
The
more
I
dreamed,
the
more
I
thought.
Why
not
I
made
my
first
golf
club
out
of
guava
limb
(番石榴树枝)
and
a
piece
of
pipe.
Then
I
hammered(用锤子敲打)
an
empty
tin
can
into
the
shape
of
a
ball.
And
finally
I
dug
two
small
holes
in
the
ground
and
hit
the
ball
back
and
forth.
I
practiced
with
the
same
devotion
and
intensity.
I
learned
working
in
the
field—except
now
I
was
driving
golf
balls
with
club,
not
oxen
with
a
broomstick.

Sometimes,
something
that
is
considered
to
be
negative
turns
out
to
be
an
advantage
on
the
job.
Though
he
is
only
18
years
old
and
blind,
Suleyman
Gokyigit
is
among
the
top
computer
technicians
and
programmers
at
InteliData
Technologies
Corp.,
a
large
software
company
with
several
offices
across
the
United
States.
"After
our
company
united
with
another
one
last
October,
two
different
computer
networks
were
driving
us
crazy,"
recalls
Douglas
Braun,
the
InteliData
president.
"We
couldn't
even
send
e-mail
to
each
other.”
In
three
weeks
Mr
Gokyigit
created
the
software
needed
to
connect
the
two
networks.
"None
of
the
company's
350
other
employees
could
have
done
the
job
in
three
months,"
says
Mr.
Braun.
"Suleyman
can
'see'
into
the
heart
of
the
computer.”
Mr.
Gokyigfi's
gift,
as
Mr.
Braun
calls
it,
is
an
unusual
ability
to
form
an
idea
of
the
inside
of
a
machine.
"The
computer
permits
me
to
reach
out
into
the
world
and
do
almost
anything
I
want
to
do,"
says
Mr.
Gokyigit
The

as
well,
thanks
partly
to
a
highly
developed
sense
of
touch.
Mitzi
Nowakowski,
an
office
manager
at
InteliData,
remembers
how
he
easily
disconnected
and
reconnected
their
computer
systems
during
a
move
last
year.
"Through
feel,
Suleyman
can
find
the
position
of
connectors,
pins
and
wires
much
faster
than
most
other
people
with
sight,"
he
says.
Much
of
the
student
programmer's
speed
comes
from
his
ability
not
to
be
interrupted
while
at
the
computer.
When
typing,
he
listens
carefully
to
the
synthesizer(合成器).
His
long,
thin
fingers
fly
over
the
keyboard.
"Nothing
seems
to
shake
his
attention,"
says
Mrs.
Nowakowski,
his
boss.
Mr.
Gokyigit
is
the
only
company
employee
who
is
available
24
hours
a
day.
"We
consider
him
our
top
problem
solver."
says
Mr.
Braun.

everyday
lives
is
by
becoming
a
parent.
It
is
a
parent's
job
to
teach
their
children
and
the
basic
skills
and
give
them
the
knowledge
they
need
to
be
successful
in
life.
For
example,
the
mother
teaches
her
children
manners
and
good
health
skills,
while
the
father
teaches
them
how
to
catch
a
ball
or
drive
a
car.
However,
in
today's
society,
we
find
that
more
and
more
parents
are
experiencing
that
the
teamwork
is
a
one-sided
thing.
According
to
a
report,
there
are
13.7
million
single
parents
raising
their
children
in
the
US
and
this
could
be
due
to
the
fact
that
parents
don't
take
responsibility
for
their
children,
so
they
leave
one
parent
to
do
it
alone.
This
is
a
sad
fact,
but
it
reflects
that
effective
teamwork
is
losing
ground
in
the
parenting
aspect
of
our
everyday
lives.
Another
place
where
teamwork
affects
us
greatly
is
in
our
jobs.
It
doesn't
matter
if
you
are
a
small
or
large
company;
if
you
have
at
least
one
employee
and
yourself,
then
teamwork
will
be
present.
I
have
noticed
that
with
the
current
economic
recession(衰退期),
people
are
racing
to
grab
jobs
but
the
quality
of
people's
work
has
gone
down
greatly.
It
just
appears
to
me
that
people
do
not
take
pride
in
their
work
any
more.
They
want
to
get
to
work
as
fast
as
they
can,
just
to
receive
the
paycheck,
but
their
quality
standards
fly
right
out
the
window.
So
I
think
teamwork
is
losing
its
ground
in
the
workforce.
There
are
too
many
people
who
want
to
work
independently
and
forget
they
are
a
part
of
a
team.
As
you
can
see,
we
run
into
the
aspects
of
teamwork
in
just
about
everything
we
do.
Do
you
believe
teamwork
is
really
losing
ground
in
today's
society
I
think
it
is.
83.
Why
does
teamwork
disappear
in
the
parenting
aspect
of
our
daily
life
A.
Parents
have
no
time
to
spare
with
their
children.
B.
Parents
have
no
chances
to
teach
their
children
about
it.
C.
Many
children
are
often
brought
up
by
a
single
parent.
D.
Many
children
are
independent
to
deal
with
their
matters.
84.
Teamwork
is
losing
ground
in
workforce
mainly
because
.
A.
workers
don't
like
to
work
together
with
others
B.
workers'
sense
is
affected
by
economic
recession
C.
workers
want
to
prove
they
are
more
capable
D.
fewer
workers
are
employed
to
save
money
85.
The
author
wants
us
to
believe
his
opinion
by
.
A.
listing
some
data
B.
giving
some
examples
C.
asking
some
questions
D.
analyzing
some
cases
86.
The
underlined
phrase
"fly
right
out
the
window"
in
Paragraph
3
means
.
A.
disappear
B.
improve
C.
increase
D.
matter
D
You
are
busy
filling
out
the
application
form
for
a
position
you
really
need;
let's
assume
you
once
actually
completed
a
couple
of
years
of
college
work
or
even
that
you
completed
your
degree.
Isn't
it
tempting
to
lie
just
a
little,
to
claim
on
the
form
that
your
diploma(毕业文凭)
represents
a
Harvard
degree
Or
that
you
finished
an
extra
couple
of
years
back
at
State
University
More
and
more
people
are
turning
to
an
utter
deception(欺骗)
like
this
to
land
their
first
job
or
to
move
head
in
their
careers.
For
personnel
officers,
like
most
Americans,
value
degrees
from
famous
schools.
A
job
applicant
may
have
a
good
education
anyway,
but
he
or
she
assumes
that
chances
of
being
hired
are
better
with
a
diploma
from
a
well-known
university.
Registrars(注册主任)at
most
well-known
colleges
say
that
they
deal
with
dishonest
claims
like
these
at
the
rate
of
about
one
per
week.
Personnel
officers
do
check
up
on
degrees
listed
on
application
forms.
If
it
turns
out
that
an
applicant
is
lying,
most
colleges
are
unwilling
to
accuse
the
applicant
directly.
One
Ivy
League
school
refers
to
them
as
“special
cases”,
One
well-known
West
Coast
school,
in
perhaps
the
most
delicate
phrase
of
all,
says
these
claims
are
made
by
“no
such
people”.
To
avoid
complete
lies,
some
job
seekers
claim
that
they
“attended”
or
“were
associated
with”
a
college
or
university.
After
careful
checking,
a
personnel
officer
may
discover
that
“attending”
means
being
dismissed
after
one
semester.
It
may
be
that
“being
associated
with”
a
college
means
that
the
job-seeker
visited
his
younger
brother
for
a
football
weekend.
One
school
that
keeps
records
of
false
claims
says
that
the
practice
dates
back
at
least
to
the
turn
of
the
century—that's
when
they
began
keeping
records,
anyhow.
If
you
don't
want
to
lie
or
even
stretch
the
truth,
there
are
companies
that
will
sell
you
a
fake
diploma.
One
company,
with
offices
in
New
York
and
on
the
West
Coast,
will
put
your
name
on
a
diploma
from
any
number
of
non-existent
colleges.
The
price
begins
at
around
twenty
dollars
for
a
diploma
from
“Smoot
State
University”.
The
prices
increase
rapidly
for
a
degree
from
the
“University
of
Purdue”.
As
there
is
no
Smoot
State
and
the
real
school
in
Indiana
is
properly
called
Purdue
University,
the
prices
seem
rather
high
for
one
sheet
of
paper.

us
that

A.

for
people

C.

becoming
a
widespread
problem
D.
employers
are
no
longer
interested
in
applicants'
actual
performances
88.
The
underlined
word
“utter”
in
the
second
paragraph
means
“
”.
A.
thorough
B.
careful
C.
incomplete
D.
spoken
89.
Once
finding
applicants
with
false
diplomas,
most
colleges
would
.
A.
keep
the
records
of
them
B.
drive
them
out
of
college
C.
avoid
direct
conflicts
with
them
D.

them
of

behavior
90.
We
can

from
the
passage
that

universities
B.

Getting
Along
with
Your
Parents
When
you
were
very
little,
you
and
your
parents
would
hug
or
touch
each
other,
play
together,
talk
to
each
other
and
be
together
almost
all
the
time.
As
you
get
older,
you
become
less
dependent
on
your
parents
and
more
dependent
on
yourself.
91.
But
communication
between
you
and
your
parents
is
not
any
less
important.
Everywhere
has
rules.
You
have
grown
up
with
lots
of
rules
around
the
house.
92.
As
you
get
older
you
may
want
to
make
some
changes.
Make
a
time
to
talk
to
your
parents
if
you
don't
already
have
a
regular
time.
When
rules
are
broken
there
are
always
consequences.
Part
of
growing
up
is
learning
that
whatever
you
do
has
an
effect
on
others
as
well
as
yourself.
93.
Your
mum
may
see
that
differently.
Instead
of
complaining
"How
unfair
it
is",
do
a
bit
of
thinking
what
was
the
reason
you
were
grounded
Did
you
learn
anything
from
this
94.
They
have
other
roles
too.
Parents
deserve
some
"time-out"
too!
So,
be
respectful
to
whoever
is
looking
after
you
when
your
parents
are
out.
Otherwise,
it
could
be
hard
for
them
to
find
a
babysitter
next
time.
Everyone
has
many
roles
to
play
in
their
lives.
Whatever
role
you
play
in
the
outside
world,
you
can
be
yourself
at
home.
Learn
to
get
along
with
each
other,
respect
each
other
and
care
for
each
other.
95.
A.
These
are
the
people
who
will
be
part
of
your
life
forever.
B.
Giving
parent
some
time
to
have
a
rest.
C.
You
may
think
that
being
late
home
is
okay
because
you
were
safely
with
a
friend.
D.
You
should
learn
to
get
along
with
our
parents.
E.
These
rules
are
for
the
benefit
of
everyone
living
in
the
house,
their
safety
and
comfort.
F.
That's
part
of
growing
up.
G.
Remember
that
your
parents
are
not
just
your
parents.

The
Unexpected
Kindness
of
a
Stranger
Yesterday,
as
I
approached
the
front
door
of
our
public
library,
a
white-haired
gentleman
stepped
back
to
hold
the
door
for
me.
You
see,
I
have

go
everywhere
these
days
with
a
walker,
and

this
was

that

and
he
did

to

He

At
that,
I
backed
up,
let
the
door
close,
and
allowed
him
to
reopen
the
door,

the
automatic

this
time.
His
comment
then
was,
"Well,
now
I
feel
like
that
I

something
helpful
and
worthwhile
today."
We
never

We
