A
Dear
Michelle,
Why
can't
my
daughter
manage
her
life
better
She
is
17
and
an
honor
student,
but
she
seems
to
be
wasting
her
life
away
with
a
boyfriend
who
is
holding
her
back.
He
consumes
every
waking,
minute
of
her
precious
time
and
smooth-talks
her
as
well.
His
goal
is
to
get
her
to
agree
to
go
to
the
college
of
his
choice,
not
her
choice,
and
because
his
grades
are
lower,
his
choice
will
be
limited.
I
feel
like
I
want
to
rescue
her,
but
she
pushes
me
away
and
shuts
me
out.
She
has
only
brought
us
pride
and
joy;
and
now
this!
Help!A
worried
mother
Dear
Mother
of
a
17-year-old
Girl,
Hmmmmm.
What's
the
matter
with
kids
today
Remember
that
song
from
"Bye
Bye
Birdie"
Well,
if
you
do
not,
let
me
fill
you
in
about
teenagers
and
their
life-management
skills.
Do
not
expect
too
much
too
soon
because
at
the
ripe
age
of
17,
life-management
is
not
within
their
reach,
not
should
it
be.
Life
experience
creates
both
the
conditions
and
the
skills
for
management,
and
if
management
went
before
experience,
there
would
be
tittle
of
it.
Your
daughter
is
an
honor
student
for
good
reasons.
She
is
smart,
studies
with
intelligence
and
you
have
given
her
good
Values.
When
the
time
comes
for
her
to
apply
for
college,
and
she
visit
the
ones
that
were
specifically
designed
for
student
the
top
of
their
grade,
she
will
most
likely
break
away
from
her
boyfriend's
influence.
It
is
rare
for
an
honor
student
to
change
the
path
of
their
academic
career
for
puppy
love.
That
being
said,
them
might
be
some
adolescent
wisdom
in
her
behavior
after
all.
Perhaps
she
is
choosing
to
worry
you,
her
parents,
for
unconscious
reasons.
Being
such
a
good
girl
and
being
a
steady
source
of
joy
might
have
become
a
bit
too
much
for
her.
Let
your
daughter
have
her
own
private
moment
of
11st
grade
rebellion.
She
deserves
a
break
from
perfection.Michelle
93.

In
a
natural
disaster—a
hurricane,
flood,
volcanic
eruption,
or
other
catastrophes—minutes
and
even
seconds
of
warning
can
make
the
difference
between
life
and
death.
Because
of
this,
scientists
are
working
to
use
the
latest
technological
advances
to
predict
when
and
where
disasters
will
happen.
They
are
also
studying
how
best
to
analyze
and
communicate
this
information
once
it
is
obtained.
On
September
29,
1998,
Hurricane
Georges
made
landfall
in
Biloxi,
Mississippi,
after
damaging
Haiti,
the
Dominican
Republic,
Puerto
Rico,
and
several
islands
of
the
Caribbean
badly
with
torrential
rains
and
winds
up
to
160
km
per
hour.
Few
people
lost
their
lives
along
the
Gulf
Coast
of
the
United
States,
although
hundreds
died
in
the
Caribbean.
This
was
a
very
different
outcome
from
1900,
when
a
powerful
Gulf
Coast
hurricane
made
an
unexpected
direct
hit
on
Galveston,
Texas,
killing
at
least
6,000
people.
Vastly
improved
hurricane
warnings
explain
the
different
circumstances
at
either
end
of
the
20th
century—residents
of
Galveston
had
no
advance
warning
that
a
storm
was
approaching,
while
residents
of
Biloxi
had
been
warned
days
in
advance,
allowing
for
extensive
safety
precautions(预防).
At
the
same
time
that
people
in
Biloxi
were
thankful
for
the
advance
warning,
some
residents
of
New
Orleans,
Louisiana
were
less
satisfied.
A
day
before
Georges
made
landfall,
forecasters
were
predicting
that
the
hurricane
had
a
good
chance
of
striking
New
Orleans.
Because
much
of
New
Orleans
lies
below
sea
level,
the
city
is
at
risk
for
flooding.
Emergency
management
officials
must
begin
evacuations(疏散)
well
before
a
storm
strikes.
But
evacuation
costs
money:
businesses
close,
tourists
leave,
and
citizens
take
precautionary
measures.
The
mayor
of
New
Orleans
estimated
that
his
city's
preparations
for
Georges
cost
more
than
50
million.
After
Georges
missed
New
Orleans,
some
residents
questioned
the
value
of
the
hurricane
forecasts
in
the
face
of
such
high
costs.
The
different
views
on
the
early
warnings
for
Hurricane
Georges
show
some
of
the
complexities
related
to
predicting
disasters.
Disaster
prediction
is
a
process
of
providing
scientific
information
to
the
government
officials
and
other
decision
makers
who
must
respond
to
those
predictions.
103.
What
is
the
purpose
of
disaster
prediction
according
to
the
passage
A.
To
identify
the
cause
of
disasters.
B.
To
save
people's
lives
and
property.
C.
To
prevent
natural
disasters
from
happening.
D.
To
apply
advanced
technology
to
disaster
prediction.
104.
Which
of
the
following
areas
suffered
the
most
severe
damage
A.
Puerto
Rico.
B.
New
Orleans.
C.
Biloxi,
Mississippi.
D.
Galveston,
Texas.
105.
The
city
residents
of
New
Orleans
were
unsatisfied
because
.
A.
their
preparations
were
made
in
vain
B.
the
hurricane
warning
arrived
rather
late
C.
the
forecast
hurricane
did
not
hit
the
city
D.
they
suffered
from
a
heavy
hurricane
attack
106.
What
does
the
passage
mainly
talk
about
A.
The
different
ways
of
disaster
prediction.
B.
Technological
advances
in
disaster
prediction.
C.
The
benefits
and
preparations
of
disaster
prediction.
D.
The
importance
and
uncertainty
of
disaster
prediction.
D
Many
people
like
the
feeling
of
the
gentle
wind
in
spring.
Many
like
to
see
the
falling
leaves
dancing
in
the
wind
in
autumn.
But
sometimes,
when
the
wind
becomes
a
storm,
it
can
be
very
destructive(毁灭性的).
A
series
of
such
storms
struck
the
US
last
month
and
caused
serious
damage
and
human
pain.
Every
year,
major
storms
cause
many
problems
around
the
world.
There
is
nothing
people
can
do
to
stop
these
powerful
forces
of
nature.
But
new
techniques
are
helping
scientists
to
predict(预测)
how,
when,
and
where
big
storms
will
happen.
The
more
exact
scientists'
warnings
are,
the
better
people
can
prepare
for
the
storms.
Predictions
are
improving.
"We've
gotten
better
over
the
years
especially
the
last
few
years,"
says
Phil
Klotzbach,
a
scientist
at
an
American
university.
How
is
a
storm
formed
Even
if
scientists
know
where
a
storm
will
happen,
winds
can
suddenly
change,
carrying
the
storm
to
a
new
direction.
"For
a
hurricane
to
happen,
conditions
have
to
be
just
right,"
Klotzbach
says.
First,
the
ocean
water
needs
to
be
warm
enough
so
that
it
evaporates
and
rises
into
the
air.
As
it
rises,
the
vapor(水蒸气)
cools
and
turns
back
into
liquid.
This
process
gives
off
heat.
This
produces
energy
like
an
engine
that
causes
winds
to
increase.
It
drives
the
formation
of
a
hurricane.
If
wind
speeds
reach
40
miles
per
hour,
the
system
is
called
"tropical
storm",
and
it
gets
a
name.
At
75
miles
per
hour,
it
becomes
a
hurricane.
Hurricanes
that
hit
the
US
start
when
a
thunderstorm
forms
off
the
coast
of
Africa.
Storms
also
develop
over
tropical
waters
in
other
parts
of
the
world.
On
average,
60
or
70
storms
form
off
Africa
every
year.
About
10
of
them
get
names.
There
are
usually
about
six
hurricanes.
Two
tend
to
be
very
big,
with
winds
of
115
miles
per
hour
or
higher.
The
hurricane
season
lasts
from
June
to
November.
Ninety
percent
of
all
hurricanes
hit
in
August,
September,
and
October.

If
you
are
like
most
international
students,
you
are
probably
pretty
comfortable
reading
and
writing
in
English,
but
not
as
comfortable
with
listening
and
speaking
in
the
language.
111.

Make
friends
with
American
students.
Many
international
students
end
up
making
friends
with
a
lot
of—or
only—other
international
students.
112.

Hanging
out
with
natives
not
only
naturally
pushes
you
to
improve
your
spoken
English,
but
also
helps
you
pick

Tell
your
American
friends
that
you
are
trying
to
improve
your
listening

skills,
and
would
like
them
to
help
you.
If
you
pronounce
a
word
incorrectly,
or
misuse
an
idiom,
you
want
them
to
tell
you.
113.

Increase
your

114.

If
you
have
known
about
the
topics
that
are
likely
to
be
discussed
in
conversation,
you
have
a
much
better
chance
of
understanding
people
when
they
talk,
and
of
being
able
to
express
yourself
well.
115.

If
you
have
to
explain
something
to
someone,
you
have
a
strong
desire
to
pronounce
everything
as
well
as
you
can,
and
find
other
ways
to
explain
yourself.
Finally,
this
becomes
a
good
habit.

The
traditional
American
school
year
begins
in
late
August
or
early
September.It
ends
in
May
or
June,
followed
by
summer
vacation.Why
such
a
long
break Because
long
ago,young
people
had
to
help
their
families
harvest
the
summer
crops.
At
least
this
is
what
people
today
may
think.The
reason
has
more
to
it.In
the
early
days
of
the
United
States,children
were
not
required
by
law
to
attend
school.
School
plans
depended
on
local
needs.Students
in
the
countryside
went
to
school
for
no
more
than
six
months
of
the
year-half
in
the
summer,half
in
the
winter.They
worked
on
family
farms
during
the
other
months.City
schools
were
often
open
much
longer,some
for
eleven
months
of
the
year.People
were
happy
to
have
a
place
for
their
children
to
go
while
they
worked.More
and
more
people
saw
the
need
for
a
system
of
required
education.But
they
had
different
ideas
of
the
length
of
holidays
