Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Milky Way? Though the trip sounds exciting, it would take years and years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut eye. They would have to sleep for years.
European researchers are now conducting hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a spaceflight to distant planets. "If there was an effective technology, it could make deep space travel a reality," said Mark Ayre of the European Space Agency last month.
What seems like a science fiction is not completely unlikely. Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleep-like state where they don’t age. They have now moved on to the small, non-hibernating mammals like rats.
A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more complex. "It’s like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer," said Marco Biggiogera, a hibernation researcher at Italy’s University of Pavia. Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person’s metabolism (新陈代谢) to lower so they would need less energy.
Medical research, however, is just half of a spaceflight hibernation system. There is a challenge of designing a suitable protective shelter. Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.
According to Ayre, the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission to Jupiter’s moon Callisto, could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six persons on a five-year flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.
60. According to the article, the hibernation research _______.
A. is just a good idea B. is always a science fiction
C. has already finished successfully D. has made some progress
61. In a hibernating state, a person needs ________.
A. less sleep B. more food C. less energy D. more movement
62. The first try of the hibernation technology _______ the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission to Jupiter’s moon Callisto.
A. will be B. is certain to be
C. may be D. has been planned for
63. What is the best title of the article?
A. Hibernation study for space travel B. Welcome to our space travel
C. To hibernate, to live longer D. Welcome to the Milky Way

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.
Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.
Music provides a kind of perception(感知)that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.
The arts are forms of thoughts as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.
Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.
So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.
64. According to Paragraph 1, students ______.
A. regard music as a way of entertainment
B. disagree with their parents on education
C. view music as an overlooked subject
D. prefer the arts to science
65. In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to _______.
A. compare it with rock music
B. show music identifies a society
C. introduce American musical traditions
D. prove music influences people’s lifestyles
66. According to the passage, the arts and science ________.
A. approach the world from different angles
B. explore different phenomena of the world
C. express people’s feelings in different ways
D. explain what it means to be human differently
67. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Music education deserves more attention.
B. Music should be of top education priority.
C. Music is an effective communication tool.
D. Music education makes students more imaginative.
D
In late February, US President Barrack Obama nominated Gary Locke as the US secretary of commerce. The nomination has caused an excitement in China. The reasons are simple: first, the US and China are two of the world's biggest economies. In recent years they have enjoyed close trade relations. Now, with the global economic crisis, the Chinese are anxious to know who will be filling such an important management role in America's trade efforts. Then, there's an even more obvious reason: the 59-year-old Gary Locke (Luo Jiahui) is a third-generation Chinese-American. He served two terms, between 1997 and 2005, as governor of the state of Washington. Along with Locke, Steven Chu (Zhu Diwen), the 1997 Nobel Prize-winning physicist was named secretary of energy. The two men are the most well-known Chinese-Americans among Chinese people.
Many Chinese are wondering whether the men's family and cultural backgrounds will affect US policies toward China. Among the most asked questions are: “will they be ‘nicer’ to China?” and “does their appointment mean that Obama will prioritize (优先考虑) China relations?” People in the motherland are naturally proud of the achievements of these people who share their blood, skin color and family names.
This will probably help improve communication and understanding in the two countries’ relations. However, some experts say that it may not be realistic to expect Chu and Locke to be more “China-friendly” than others in the Obama administration. They are, after all, American officials serving the American people. Especially on matters of national interest, they will most likely not hesitate to play the hard line and put pressure on China.
68. What is the passage mainly about? A. The nomination of a Chinese-American. B. Trade relations between China and the US. C. Chinese-Americans’ recent achievement. D. Reactions of some Chinese to the appointments.
69. What do many Chinese think of the appointments of Locke and Chu? A. More Chinese-Americans will enter the American political scene. B. Chinese-Americans will have more influence in different areas. C. Because of these two, US policy will be more "China-friendly". D. The two countries will not enjoy a much closer relationship.
70. From the text, we can infer that ______. A. Chinese-Americans no longer care about the cultural background B. Chu and Locke will bring changes to the Obama administration C. some experts think Locke and Chu will probably act in US interests D. Locke and Chu will probably adopt the hard line towards China
71. Which of the following is the best title?
A. What will it lead to? B. Who will be US President?
C. Why is it Gary Locke? D. Are they good friends?

The world economy has run into a brick wall. Despite countless warnings in recent years about the need to address a potential hunger crisis in poor countries and an energy crisis worldwide, world leaders failed to think ahead. The result is a global food crisis. Wheat, corn and rice prices have more than doubled in the past two years. And oil prices have increased more than three times since the start of 2004. These food-price increases, combined with increasing energy costs, will slow if not stop economic growth in many parts of the world and will even affect political stability. Practical solutions to these problems do exist, but we'll have to start thinking ahead and acting globally.
Here are three steps to ease the current food crisis and avoid the potential for a global crisis. The first is to promote the dramatic success of Malawi, a country in southern Africa, which three years ago established a special fund to help its farmers get fertilizer and seeds with high productivity. Malawi’s harvest doubled after just one year. An international fund based on the Malawi model would cost a mere $10 per person annually in the rich world, or $10 billion altogether.
Second, the U.S. and Europe should abandon their policies of paying partly for the change of food into biofuels. The U.S. government gives farmers a taxpayer-financed payment of 51 cents per gallon of ethanol (乙醇) changed from corn. There may be a case for biofuels produced on lands that do not produce foods — tree crops, grasses and wood products — but there's no case for the government to pay to put the world's dinner into the gas tank.
Third, we urgently need to weather-proof the world's crops as soon and as effectively as possible. For a poor farmer, sometimes something as simple as a farm pond — which collects rainwater to be used in dry weather — can make the difference between a good harvest and a bad one. The world has already committed to establishing a Climate Adaptation Fund to help poor regions climate-proof vital economic activities such as food production and health care but has not yet acted upon the promise.
72. An international fund based on the Malawi model would______.
A. cost each of the developed countries $10 billion per year
B. aim to double the harvest in southern African countries in a year
C. decrease the food prices as well as the energy prices
D. give poor farmers access to fertilizer and highly productive seeds
73. With the second step, the author expresses the idea that ______.
A. it is not wise to change food crops into gas
B. it is misleading to put tree crops into the gas tank
C. we should get alternative forms of fuel in any way
D. biofuels should be developed on a large scale
74. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. A rain-collecting pond is a simple safeguard against dry weather.
B. A Climate Adaptation Fund has been established to help poor regions.
C. The world has made a serious promise to build farm ponds.
D. It makes a great difference whether we develop wood products or not.
75. In the passage, the author calls on us to______.
A. slow down but not to stop economic growth
B. develop tree crops, grasses and wood products
C. achieve economic growth and political stability
D. act now so as to relieve the global food shortage

Chinese parents are being urged to pay more attention to their children’s nutrition, after a study revealed that unscientific ways of feeding babies and a lack of trace elements are the two biggest threats to youngsters’ health. Experts drew these conclusions from a two-year study into the nutrition and health situation of children under six in ten cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Started in 2003 by the China National Children’s Center, the survey includes 8,043 children, equally divided between the sexes. It shows 37 percent of surveyed children have baby food earlier than the recommended age of four to six months old, with another 35 percent taking it later, which in return brings about a nutrition difference as these children grow up. “Our children above four to six months old fall behind foreign children in terms of their physical well-being,” said Zhao Shunyi, head of the center. She called on Chinese parents to pay more attention to their children’s nutrition after they stop breast-feeding at six months old.
Trace elements
The survey also shows more than half of the children above six months old are deficient in five trace elements which are crucial to their physical development – magnesium, copper, calcium, iron and zinc. “Lack of zinc will lead to low level of intelligence,” said Dou Xiaowei, vice director of the National Center for Child Nutrition Quality Supervision and Testing. “Parents had better choose baby food with plentiful trace elements, especially calcium, iron and zinc.”
Zhao said, “the center is urging the government to strengthen child food production management by revising related laws. Child food producers should be advised to market products with rich trace elements.”

Dear Student Union:
I have just read the advertisement on the school bulletin. I want to apply for one of the 5 volunteers as English teachers in S.O.S. Children’s Village.
I think I am quite qualified for this position. Not only am I skillful at written English, but I can speak English fluently as well. What’s more, I am a member of Loving Heart Club. While working in the club, I have gained much experience on getting along with others and how to help people, which is of great importance to a volunteer. When it comes to my character, I am warm-hearted and full of kindness. Though volunteering, often defined as working for others without pay, is a difficult task, I have a confident will to manage it well.
I would appreciate it if I could be offered the opportunity.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
