In England, afternoon tea, between four and five, is the most informal meal of the day. If you are a friend of the family, you may drop in for tea without an invitation. Very often it is not served at a table. The members of the family and visitors take tea in the sitting room. Each person has a cup and saucer (茶碟 ), a spoon (匙 ) and a small plate for bread and butter (奶油) and cake. Thirty years ago I worked in a company. My job was to sell the cars . I was young and strong and I had been to most parts of the world and I spent one fifth of my time in the trains or planes. I liked such a life and sometimes I called myself “traveler ”.
But one day I got into trouble. It was a cold morning. It blew heavily and the ground was covered with thick snow outside. I was still in bed though it was nine. I recently read about a wonderful act of kindness. It is about the country singer, Jan Howard, and it happened in the mid 1950’s. You can read about it in her autobiography(自传),Sunshine and Shadow. Before she became a singer, Jan suffered a lot with her three children, two of whom were babies. She was forced to leave her husband because he didn’t care about the family. At one point she suffered a nervous breakdown due to his cruel and uncaring behavior.
She took her children with her and decided to leave their home, but didn’t know her destination. This all took place in a small town in Kansas, called Frontenac. She had very little gas in the tank and no money at all and she didn’t even manage to make it out of Frontenac. As she used up the gas she got into a panic. She then went to a house, not knowing the owner. She “put her pride in her pocket” and went to the door.
When she explained her situation to the older woman who answered the door, the woman ordered her husband to help Jan carry the children into the house. These kind people allowed her to stay for two weeks until she received some money in the mail from a relative. They fed and cared for Jan and her children for all that time. This is one of the most exciting acts of kindness I have ever come across in my fifty years. These angels were named Henry and Sarah and they would always be warmly remembered by me for what they did for Jan and her children.
48.What is the passage mainly about
A. A singer’s autobiography. B. The life of an old couple.
C. An act of kindness. D. The difficulties Jan met.
49.What happened to Jan Howard in Frontenac
A. She found a friendly couple as she had expected.
B. She didn’t have enough money to go on with her journey.
C. She couldn’t live with her children.
D. She was too proud to ask for help from others.
50. From the passage we learn that the author .
A. believes Jan Howard met with angels
B. doesn’t know the old couple’s names
C. doesn’t know where the old couple lived
D. thinks very highly of the old couple
51.Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Jan suffered a lot but at last became famous as a singer.
B. The author got the old couple’s help in Frontenac.
C. Jan went to Kansas to realize her dream of becoming a singer.
D. The author wrote the autobiography Sunshine and Shadow.

A recent study shows that boys and girls learn differently. So maybe we can maximize(最大化)learning by teaching them in single gender(性别)programs.
First, boys and girls see differently. Boys interpret(解释)the world as objects moving through space. In their opinion, a good teacher should move around the room constantly and be that object.
The male eye is usually drawn to cooler colors like silver, blue, black, grey, and brown. It’s no accident boys tend to create pictures of moving objects like spaceships, cars, and trucks in dark colors instead of drawing a happy colorful family, like girls in their class. The female eye, on the other hand, is drawn to textures(质地)and colors. They tend to like warmer colors — red, yellow, orange — and visuals with more details, like faces. Girls work well in circles, facing each other. Using descriptive(描写的)phrases in presentations or lots of colors on the chalkboard can help get their attention.
Boys and girls also hear differently. When someone speaks in a loud tone, girls interpret it as yelling. They think you’re mad and should quiet down. Girls are more sensitive to sounds. Girls’ teachers should notice the tone of their voices. Boys’ teachers should sound matter of fact, even excited.
Boys’ nervous systems cause them to be more alert(敏捷的)when they’re standing, moving, and the room temperature is around 20℃. Stress in boys tends to increase blood flow to their brains, a process that helps them stay focused. This won’t work for girls, who are more focused seated in a warmer room around 25℃. Girls also respond to stress differently. When exposed to a threat, blood goes to their guts(内脏), leaving them feeling nervous or anxious.
According to the new study in order to make children learn more effectively,
52.we’d better ____________ .
A. care for girls as well as boys in a class
B. hold single gender classes
C. make girls sit in front of a classroom
D. teach in classes mixed with two
53.According to the passage, girls ________ .
A. are easily attracted by objects with warm colors
B. prefer their teachers to speak loudly
C. hope the teachers to speak loudly
D. often ignore(忽视) the facial expressions of their teachers
54.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Boys feel stressed in a very cold room.
B. Boys tend to feel nervous under stress.
C. Girls need a higher temperature than boys to stay focused.
D. Girls should do more sports to keep their brains active.
55.Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Differences Between Boys and Girls
B. Different Ways to Teach Boys and Girls
C. Boys and Girls Learn Differently
D. Physical Differences Between Boys and Girls

As you know, homework is a major part of school life. Luckily, there are several things you can do to make homework less work.
Most high school students have between two and three hours of homework a night. If it is a heavy homework day, you may need to devote even more time. It is a good idea to come up with some kind of homework plan, especially if you are going to do other activities after school.
A bedroom, study or any room where you can get away from noise is the best place to get homework done. But don’t study on your comfortable bed — you might fall asleep there.
When you start your homework, do the hardest work first. Some people like to start with the easiest thing to get it out of the way, but you will have the most energy and focus when you begin. It’s best to use this metal power(脑力)on the subjects that are most challenging.
Most people’s attention spans(持续时间)don’t last very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing will make you less productive. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.
Sometimes even though you are paying attention in class, certain subjects seem too hard. The first place to turn to for help is your teachers. Sometimes your parents can help you. You may also be able to get some help from other students or a personal tutor(家教).
