9. Teaching procedures for Period 1
Step 1 Warmer
Greetings
Introduce yourself to your students. And ask their names, and say nice to meet you. Mime writing a letter, or start to write one on the board. Then ask, What am I doing Elicit: You’re writing a Letter.
Now start to read the letter. Again ask: What am I doing Elicit: You’re reading a letter.
Step 2 Lead in
1. T: This lessen, which we are going to learn today, is about London.
Where is London Do you know more about London
2. T: Ok, I will draw a map about London. And introduce River Thames, Buckingham Palace, London Eye, Big Ben and the biggest park Hyde Park.
Step 3 Presentation
1. T: Open your books on page 2. Then hold up the books to show the children the correct page. Ask the children to look at the pages and to guess as much information about what is happening in the story.
2. Mime writing a letter, or start to write one on the board. Then ask, What am I doing Elicit: You’re writing a Letter. Now start to read the letter. Again ask: What am I doing Elicit: You’re reading a letter. Point to the people doing different activities and ask what are they doing Provide the new vocabulary and write it on the board.
Step 4 Listen
1. Play the cassette. The children listen and follow in their books.
2. Play the cassette again. Pause after each dialogue and perform an action to aid comprehension, e.g. reading a letter, dancing, writing and opening a letter. And repeat after the cassette.
Step 5 Role play
1. Divide the class into groups, with each group taking on a role in the story: Lingling, Amy and Lucy.
2. The children now act out the dialogue in pairs, or groups of three. 3. Call volunteers to the front of the class to act out the dialogue to their classmates.
10. Homework
Copy the new words and write down the Chinese meaning.
Read the dialogue after the tape for twenty minutes.
Try to act the dialogue.
