In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity.Others say that competition is bad, that it sets one person against another, that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied(依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying, they always have an excuse:“I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.21·cn·jy·com

D.One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.2-1-c-n-j-y

(2016高考阅读理解)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的选项中选出最佳选项。
A less well known benefit of having great EQ is that it can help in effective stress management,or in other words,to bring our stress to a comfortable level. But how can Emotional Intelligence help in stress management?
Our emotions are good indicators of our stress level. If we are aware of our own emotions,we can identify the signs of unusually high stress earlier. Then we can take steps to relax or to control our emotions, and avoid further stress. For example, getting angry ten times in one single day at our team members, peers,or other people we interact with is most likely not a sign that they have suddenly become more annoying or incapable. It is more likely to be a sign that our level of stress has increased, and that our tolerance for anything that doesn’t go our way has decreased.
Self-management,the second dimension of Emotional Intelligence, also helps decrease our stress.Self-management is our ability to prevent the waves of our negative emotions from rising too high.An example of self-management is keeping our sadness or anger from reaching an intensity when we cannot fun_ction and work normally, and when it can even be painful.
Such high emotional waves further escalate stress in two ways.First, stress is expanded by the feeling that we are “losing control”.And then it can be accompanied by guilt...and even more stress.Secondly, decisions we make during these emotional waves are usually not well-thought and usually bring us more trouble and more stress. For example, decisions we make during an period of anger can be expected to result in extra work to repair “additional damages”.2·1·c·n·j·y
Social awareness, the third dimension of Emotional Intelligence decreases stress by reducing interpersonal conflicts in the workplace. One serious conflict with one of our team members or peers can eat up a large amount of our energy and result in a lot of stress.
How exactly does better social awareness lead to less conflicts?Social awareness is the ability to recognize emotions in other people, and to handle them resourcefully. In situations when conflicts can easily arise, this skill is particularly useful.By identifying the emotions in our counterpart and then acknowledging these emotions,we can prevent a disagreement from turning into an open personal conflict.
As a conclusion,if you are feeling that you are too stressed,I encourage you to look at how you could develop your Emotional Intelligence further.

Masses of floating ice are so large that they dwarf__your__ship,making you question whether your ship still can be spotted among such floating mountains. They are so improbable looking that you simply look in wonder. It seems that nothing that large could be natural—and then it strikes you that something so large could only be natural.
Now,people realize that as climate change is raising global temperatures, more icebergs are being born.Antarctica creates far more of them than Greenland, the source of bergs in Arctic waters.Antarctica's are also much larger, sometimes reaching the size of small countries.Recent data show the average atmospheric temperature has increased about 4.5? in the western Antarctic Peninsula since the 1940s,making the region, among the fastest warming on earth. This jump has been shown in the recent breaking of major ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula. As a result, thousands of new icebergs have broken off, from ice shelves into the Southern Ocean at an accelerated rate.21教育名师原创作品
Even as more icebergs are being created, scientists are learning that they are far from inactive masses of ice.In fact, they strikingly alter their environments biologically, chemically, and physically, making them islands of life in the open sea.Observers at sea have long remarked that they attract seals, and seabirds, and divers have noticed that fish are more numerous near them than in the surrounding sea.Now scientists are learning just what the attraction is all about.
Depending on their size, location, and the season, icebergs can be nurturers (培养者) or destroyers.During their existence—typically years from breaking off from an Antarctic or Greenlandic glacier to their gradual melting as they float into lower altitudes, they support animals on,around, even inside their splendid ice castle. They fertilize the ocean with nutrients, increasing sea creature production.Grounded bergs can shelter areas of the seafloor, protecting bottom-living creatures from free-floating icebergs. However, large bergs can also trap sea ice, preventing its annual breakup and thus stopping phytoplankton (浮游植物) from getting life—giving sunlight, breaking the food chain at its first link.
Icebergs will continue to astonish and attract visitors to the polar regions. But now these frozen large masses are taking on a new dimension of wonder as we uncover their vital role in the environment of polar seas.No longer can we look at icebergs as mere passive white mountains floating in the sea. They are active agents of change, each one is an icy oasis with awake of life as it floats on its unstoppable oceanic journey to melting.

SANTA MONICA,Calif,(KABC)—A Santa Monica High School teacher who was put on leave after using physical force to control a student who was selling marijuana(大麻) in his classroom has received surprising support on Facebook. The incident was captured on video and has caused a sudden reaction from parents, teachers, students and even graduates. They are showing their support for Black.A Facebook page supporting “Coach Black” has over 4,700 likes. And many want him back in the classroom.21教育名师原创作品
Student witnesses say Mark Black, who is also the wrestling coach, tried to confiscate(没收) a bag of marijuana and was then injured by the student with a pencil. The cellphone video shows Black locking the student’s leg and pinning the student to the ground.“He just want him to stop and he was trying to be a teacher and help, and I don’t think it was his fault,”said student Kylan Townsend.
School Board member Oscar De La Torre says Mr.Black is one of his teachers at Santa Monica High School.“I know him very well.I know him to be a fair person,a good person, someone who cares deeply about his students,”said De La Torre. He says that the video does not tell the whole story and that the incident brings to light the issue of drug use, something the district needs to address.
But in an email to parents,Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Superintendent Sandra Lyon says the teacher’s behavior is “absolutely alarming”.She put Black on leave during an independent investigation.
Lyon has come under fire from parents for initially saying the kind of physical action used by the teacher was unacceptable. On Saturday,Lyon released the following statement to Eyewitness News:“I want to stress that teachers are at times confronted with difficulty, even threatening situations, and they must make judgment calls to protect safety.I want to emphasize that putting the teacher who was involved in this incident on leave until completion of an independent investigation is a matter of standard policy and practice;it in no way prejudices the outcome of the investigation.”
Stuents hope the situation will have a quick and just resolution. An online petition(请愿书) has also been created by one of Black’s former students. The petition has already gained thousands of signatures.
Black did not respond to a request for comment.

Such people never bump into other people. However, 3 second person thought that this was 4 a question of civilized behavior than good manners. An old man in a faded yellow shirt sat in a windowless room on a raised concrete form. The only source of heat came from somewhere beneath the plastic mattress and the rough blanket the blank-faced police woman had handed him after taking his thumb prints. He heard voices and metallic clang as the cell door swung open.
At the front desk a tired looking policeman handed the old man back his belongings, his worn-out cap and the Seiko watch that had stopped working the day his beloved Evelyn left. The policeman dramatically held the blue plastic bag at an arm’s length to the old man who took it and made sure its contents were undamaged:the goat meat, palm oil, leaves and spices. He ignored the confused expression on the officer’s face and signed the document declaring he had been returned the possessions they had taken off him the night before.21·cn·jy·com
No one spoke to him as he walked slowly towards the exit.
“Mr.Easy-nwa?”he stopped and prayed to God who now took care of Evelyn to please take him far away from this unhappy place of expressionless faces, clipped accents and people who did not even attempt to pronounce his name right.
“Ezenwa,”he said and looked at a woman with tangerine lips, her name tag said Jessica Harlow,Social Services.“A bit far from home,”she said as she drove fast and with confidence the way Evelyn used to.He wondered if she meant the 50 miles from Liverpool or the 50,000 miles from Enugu,a city in Nigeria. He did not bother replying as this woman had plenty to say about the weather, bad drivers, her daughter’s school play...
At last she drew up outside the block of flats where he lived.
“Got here in the end,”said she seriously,“Really Mr.Easynwa,if you keep getting lost,we will have to consider moving you into a home.”
“No need.I was not lost,” he answered. He carefully rolled up the sleeves of the oversize bomber jacket he wore and turned on the tap to wash his hands, relieved the pipes were not frozen. In a clean pan he placed the chopped pieces of goat meat. The herbs and spices that had taken him three months to track down, the uziza seeds had taken him into the heart of Granby Market in Liverpool, his uchanwu leaves down a shady back alley in Manchester, and yesterday, among other food items, the finest goat meat from a Sierra Leonean Butcher in Birmingham. That had taken some time,so much that he missed the last train and when the police found him shivering outside the locked up station,he was so cold that he couldn’t answer loudly enough the pink-faced big copper who yelled in his face,“What’s your name sir?”spraying his face with spittle(唾沫) as he did so,leaving them with no choice but to search an exhausted, frozen old black man and finding him in possession of mysterious condiments(调味品) including a bag of dried bitter-leaf which could of course be mistaken for anything that resulted in him getting charged with...possession.
He lifted the lid of the bubbling soup, the room was filled with the rich and spicy scent of his culinary(烹饪的) effort. He served two bowls, taking the chipped one and placing the other opposite where Evelyn would have sat.He would tell her about his adventure. It was their anniversary and this was the perfect pepper soup to celebrate.

There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween—when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me.I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents' room.It is simple:a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side.Their bed is my safe zone.I can jump on it anytime—waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.
I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It's proof I lived,I grew, and I learned.

Almost everyone has experienced anxiety at some time in their lives, and to do so is not only probably quite sensible, too. In some sense, the feeling of anxiety is like a signal to us that we need to take action. If we are walking alone down a dark street and start to feel anxious,we might think,“This is getting frightening.I think I’ll nip into the pub and call a cab.” so we will do something to get ourselves somewhere safe.If we have an exam coming up,we are likely to start feeling anxious. We might think,“I can’t pretend it’s not happening.I’ve got to revise or I’ll totally mess up.” Once again, anxiety can guide us to behave in a way that is in our best interests.21cnjy.com
However, anxiety can also imprison us.It stops us from doing what we would like to do and living our life fully.Feeling anxious is undoubtedly a fact of life,so our goal is not to live an anxiety-free life but to live our life with acceptable levels of anxiety in a full way.21·cn·jy·com
Anxiety can be abnormal when it starts to take over our thinking processes and our lives, and makes it difficult for us to fun_ction.It is likely that people who experience extreme and upsetting levels of continual anxiety are suffering from a disorder called Generalised Anxiety Disorder(GAD).【版权所有:21教育】
The most important feature of GAD is that people experience quite severe anxiety and worry about a wide range of things over long periods of time.Other symptoms include finding it difficult to control the worry, getting easily tired, difficulty concentrating and sleep disturbance.
People with GAD tend to worry about the same kinds of things as people without GAD—only they fall into worrying more easily and tend to spend more time worrying.Research suggests that our worry tends to cluster around particular themes including our health, finances, relationships, family, work and finally, worry about worrying.
Some worries are realistic(“real event” worries). For example,if I worry about the size of my credit card bill, then this problem exists and my worry arises from a real problem. Some worries are about things that may never happen(“hypothetical event” worries).Sometimes, real event worries spiral(螺旋形上升) into hypothetical event worries. For example,“My neighbors are noisy” could spiral into “I’ll never be able to sell the house.I’ll be stuck here for ever.”
Even though you may always have tended to worry, you can still learn to understand it and get on the top of it.Extreme worry is not a part of your personality, and it’s not something that you should accept as unavoidable.
