It doesn’t matter what the weather is like. However severe the journey is, as long as I am with nature, I don’t care. For me, there is something sacred about breathing clean air, listening to the sounds of birds and observing the plants and animals around me. When I reach the highest place on my walk, I like to sit in silence for a long time and enjoy the beautiful scenery in front of me. It is like food for my spirit. Last year I invited two friends to come with me. Unfortunately they were not very fit and so the walk was hard on them. I was worried that we wouldn’t reach our campsite before dark and begged them to walk faster. They complained loudly all the way. When the walk was over, we all agreed that it was an enjoyable experience. However, the truth was that I would never invite them to come walking with me again. Maybe the fact that I was born four days after the Guinness Book was first conceived, in September 1954, has something to do with it. That was also the year Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile. Ⅲ.
1.5 Learning about language分词汇和语法两部分,即Discovering useful words and expressions和 Revising useful structures。
1.7 Reading and writing
1st Period: Warming up

Step Ⅰ Lead-in
T: Well, at the very beginning, here is a quite easy question for you: Do you know the host city for the 2008 Olympic Games?
Ss: Of course! It’s our capital city—Beijing!
T: Yes, it’s amazing. All of the people feel proud for our nation. Do you still remember the 2004 Olympic Games held in Sydney?
Ss: Yes. In that Olympic Games, China has won 28 golden medals and ranked the second.
T: And who impressed you most?
Ss: ( Students here may list quite a lot of sportsmen and sportswomen. And the teacher can take Liu Xiang as an example for he is the first Asian who won the golden medal in hurdling.)
T: Yes, they are the heroes for our nation.
Step Ⅱ Warming Up
Get the students to talk about pictures in Warming up.
T: Well, now, let’s look at these pictures on Page 1 and talk about how these participants are feeling.
Ss: Exultant(狂喜): Because Liu Xiang is the first Asian who won the hurdling, which belongs to the track and field — the weakest item for Asian.
Calm: Participants are so strong in some certain spectator sports that they are confident in winning the golden medals.
Exciting: Their hard and dull practicing has been rewarded.
We need make efferts to get a good achievement in some areas that are never surceed.
T: Behind the applause, medals, flowers and praise, it is hard working, dull practicing, determination, and loneliness and persistent that assist them make the world records, keep them and break them. We admire them. However, there are other people who are fond of other unconventional maximal exercise (极限运动) also have their world records. Now do a listening practice on Page 51, and then answer my questions.
Step Ⅲ Listening
Get students to complete the listening practice on Page 51.
☆ Ss ought to learn how to take notes while listening.
T: Turn to Page 51 and read the 6 questions about which you will hear in the tape.
Ss skim the questionswrite down.
T: While the first listening, you just need to write down the key words or expressions as the right answers to the 6 questions. Then during the second listening, you should fill in the following form on Page 51 with details that Edwin and Cecilia mention. At the last time, you are supposed to make up the missing words or any useful expressions as well.
Ss: Excuse me. What’s that for? I mean the course of taking detailed notes.
T: To improve your listening ability, we must conduct such practice. On one hand, fast notes taking is a kind of basic capacity that one should have; on the other hand, as you write down every sentence or even a single word, you have a deeper understanding of the listening material, in other words the listening passages are fully digested. So keep practicing in this way will do you a lot good.
T: OK!Now, listen carefully.
After a while, the students finish the listening part. Then check their answers.
T: You see, world records exist in various aspects. Like the Olympic Games in America, these world records also have their own name. Do you know what it is?
Ss: Guinness World Record.
T: That’s it! Next, let’s learn more information about the GWR.
Step Ⅳ Discussin
☆ In this part, in order to arouse students’ interest, a competition with interesting questions will be a wise choice.
T: Next, we are going to start with a contest. Now listen to the rules and relevant explanations attentively please! First of all, you will be divided into six (or less) groups and each group is supposed to answer five questions about the GWR. The group which provides the most correct answers will win the contest, and earn themselves a big reward. (Teacher had better prepare some presents to hand out for the winner group.)
Notes: Or less questions for each group, depending on teachers’ arrangements.
☆After announcing the rules, teacher might ask a question before the contest, that is, the basic information about the GWR.
T: By the way, here is a question for all of you. It is well-known that GWR is Guinness World Records, but how much do you know about it? Its founder? Time of establishment? How does it work? How can be admitted ...
Ss: We don’t know much about it, except that only the wonderful people and amazing behaviors hold the GWR.
T: OK. Next, look at the screen and have a basic idea of GWR.
In 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Brewery, went on a shooting party and became involved in an argument. Which was the fastest game bird in Europe? The golden plover or the grouse? He realized then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular. He was right!Sir Hugh’s idea became reality when Norris and Ross McWhirter, who had been running a fact-finding agency in London, were commissioned to compile what became The Guinness Book of Records. The first edition was bound on August 27, 1955, and went to the top of the British bestseller lists by Christmas that year. Since then, Guinness World Records has become a household name and the global leader in world records. No other enterprise collects, confirms, accredits and presents world record data with the same investment in comprehensiveness and authenticity.
The book has gone on to become a record breaker in its own right. With sales of more than 100 million copies in 100 different countries and 37 languages, Guinness World Records is the world’s best ever selling copyright book!
Show the above material to students.
Ss: Wow that is attracting and exciting! So what are included then?
T: The GWR includes totally eight categories: human body, amazing feats, natural world, science && tech, arts && media, modern society, travel && transport, sports && games.
Ss: Then what are the procedures of applying for GWR?
T: Good questions! However, I won’t tell you right now. You can get the replies in many different ways, e.g. surfing the Internet, refer to encyclopedia, consult a professional book, or whatever.
☆ When the students are eager to know more about GWR, teacher should encourage them to find answers for themselves, which is very helpful for their learning skills.
T: Do remember look up for the answers and we gonna share it next period. Now, it is high time that we began the contest, are you ready?
Ss: Sure.
☆ Ss make their choices. After that teacher should evaluate them and also make explanation to let Ss have further understanding of the issues that appear in the questions.

Step Ⅱ Pre-reading
☆First ask the students to match the pictures with teacher’s introduction!
Show the imtroductary words and corresponding pictures to the students one by one.
1. A hula hoop is a ring made of wood or plastic, which is used for exercise and fun in gym or any playground. Were you one of those kids who could not resist hollering? Here’s how to use one.
Steps:
a. Take hold of the hula hoop.
b. Lower it down to about ankle level.
c. Step into it (with both feet).
d. Bring it up to just below your waist.
e. Hold it with both hands and pull it forward so that it’s resting against your back.
f. With both hands, fling the hoop to the left so that its inner edge rolls in a circle around your body. Do this a few times so that you get the feel of it.
g. Leave the hula hoop on the ground for a few minutes and practice your hip movements: Leaving your feet firmly planted about shoulder width apart, circle your pelvis (yes, just like Elvis!): left, back, right, forward. Do this a few times till you get the feel of it.
h. Put the movements together: As you fling the hoop to the left, bring your hips left to meet the hoop and then rotate them back and to the right and forward so that your hips are following the rotation of the hoop.
i. Keep the hoop going around your hips as long as you can. When it falls to the ground (as it inevitably will!) pick it up and try again.
j. Once you’ve mastered the basic motion, see how far you can walk without dropping the hoop.
2. Pogo stick jumping:
A pogo stick is a device, usually considered a children’s toy, used for hopping up and down. It was invented by Joseph Winston Herbert Hopkins in the 1820s. It consists of a pole with a T-bar handle at one end, and spring-loaded footpads on the other.
The pole juts down some distance below the footpads and has a rubber cover at the bottom end for traction. The operator places his feet on the footpads while balancing on the pole, then jumps or presses down on the footpads to compress the spring. When the spring has been fully compressed, the operator lifts his weight aided by the recoil of the spring and the pogo-stick; and hops several inches or even feet into the air. This process is repeated to create a hopping action. The pogo stick can be steered, with some difficulty, by shifting one’s weight; and becomes an interesting form of locomotion.
3. Doing jumping jacks — is a physical exercise performed by jumping to a position with the legs spread wide and the hands touching overhead and then returning to a position with the feet together and the arms at the sides.
4. Somersaulting — an acrobatic stunt in which the feet roll over the head (either forward or backward) and return, Also called somerset; also called regionally tumbleset.
5. Standing on a Swiss ball
Swiss balls — also known as exercise balls, gym balls, sports balls, fit balls, therapy balls or body balls — are used in physical therapy and exercise. They are elastic rubber balls with a diameter of usually 55 to 85 cm (22 to 34 inches).
A primary benefit of exercising with an exercise ball versus floor exercises is that the body responds to the instability of the ball to keep balanced on the exercise ball, and over time the muscles used to keep in balance on the Swiss ball become stronger. Most frequently, it is the core body muscles — the abdominal muscles and back muscles — that are the focus of exercise ball fitness programs.
Using an exercise ball as part of a fitness program can include a wide range of difficulty levels, each requiring support from the back and stomach muscles that help firm up the trunk muscles in the body. Exercise balls are commonly used as part of a physical therapy program for individuals with low back pain.
Examples of uses of the exercise ball include: — Developing overall control and strength of the core body muscles
— Increasing lower back mobility
— Increasing abdominal and back muscle strength
— Improving balance and stability
— Learning proper body mechanics and posture while lifting objects
The exercise ball can also be used as a substitute for a chair (e.g. an office chair), which requires the abdominal and back muscles to work — as well as proper posture — while sitting in order to stay on the ball.
6. Doing lunges — A sudden forward movement or plunge.
Key: (A)—6 (B)—1 (C)—5 (D)—2 (E)—4 (F)—3
T: Have you ever done these before?
Ss: Yes!/ No! (Here students may list some activities they take just for fun.)
The teacher guides the students to talk about these activities according to the questions on Page1.
T: Well, from what you have said above, I know that few of you can persist in doing any of them, for most of you do them just for fun. However, here is a man, named Ashrita Furman, not only can do these but even set and keep the GWR. Do you want to know more about him?

I thought it was fun and challenging and I decided to try the sport. I needed a ramp to practice it, so I went to see the park manager and I told him about my plan to build one in his park. I was very happy to learn that he also thought it was a good idea. Two weeks later, my friends and I began skateboarding on a new ramp.
I have been skateboarding for three years and I still love it. I like the feeling I get when I am getting ready for a ride. I get excited and I can feel my heart beating faster. When I concentrate on the way my body moves in the air, I feel that I am flying and I am free from everything.
I am like every other rider; I always wear a helmet and other equipment to protect myself. I want to do it well, and I also want to play it safe. Although I am a skilled skateboarder now, I won’t try a trick that is too dangerous. I think the spirit of extreme sports like skateboarding is not to show off how cool I am, but to try something new and overcome fear.

By the 1987-1988 seasons, Jordan had the support of two new players: Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant. The 1988-1989 seasons elevated the Bulls to the Eastern Conference when they beat the New York Knicks, 115-111. Jordan and the Bulls had to face the powerhouse — the Detroit Pistons. Phil Jackson came aboard for the 1989-1990 season as the new coach of the Bulls. Again, the Bulls moved up to the Eastern Conference level only to lose to the Detroit Pistons again. The previous year of 1988-1989 also brought Michael Jordan a new contract: twenty-five million dollars over a period of eight years — the richest contract ever signed by a basketball player. Yesterday a man set a new record by continuously writing down 2008 DRAGON on a large piece of paper in Chinese calligraphy. The attempt started from early morning of this Monday at five o’clock, and finished till 10 p.m. Within the 16 hours, he only had seven ten-minute breaks to drink water, have meals or use toilet, so it was really a tough challenge for a student of Senior One. Fortunately, Student A succeeded at last. As he recalled after the attempt, he began to learn Chinese calligraphy when he was just five years old. After years of learning and practicing, he could write beautiful regular script. When the news came that China had won the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, he made a decision to do something meaningful. And it happened that he read a story about the Guinness. Therefore, a wonderful idea came into his mind... Now, the video tape has been sent to the office of Guinness World Records as a proof of his successful record breaking.

25) The Kobe (神户)earthquake of January 1995 resulted in overall losses of $100 billion (?63.04 billion), making it the costliest natural disaster to befall any one country.
More than six years after the earthquake that caused such devastation, there is little sign of life in Kobe returning to normal. With such enormous damage to people and property, it was inevitable that life in the region would be changed forever. Many people must now pay two mortgages — on the homes they currently own and the ones they lost in the quake. Earthquakes start deep down in the Earth’s crust, where stress builds up along fault lines (such as the San Andreas Fault in northern California). When enough stress builds up, these huge plates of rock crash together, releasing vast amounts of energy. This energy causes the Earth to shake. The severity depends both on whether the plates have moved horizontally or vertically, and on the strength or magnitude of the movement. This magnitude is measured on the Richter scale, invented by seismologist Charles Richter in 1935.

Once completed, it will be the world’s largest aircraft in active service, bigger even than the mammoth Ukrainian Anotov An — 124 cargo carrier.
