“Europe and Japan are now facing a population problem that is unprecedented (前所未有的) in human history — declining population over time with an increase in the percentage of old people,” said Bill Butz, president of the Population Reference Bureau.
Countries have lost people because of wars, diseases and natural disasters but never — at least in modern history — because women stopped having enough children, Butz said.
The U.S. is the fastest growing industrialized nation in the world, adding about 2.8 million people a year. That’s a little less than 1 percent, but enough to mitigate (缓解) the kinds of problems facing Japan and many European countries.
Europe, with 728 million people, saw its population shrink by 74,000 since the beginning of the decade, according to the United Nations. By 2050, it is projected to lose a total of 75 million people.
The problem is that birth rates are so low that there aren’t enough young people entering the work force to support an aging population, said Hans Peter Kohler, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is so concerned that he recently proposed paying women to have children. Last year, France increased monthly stipends (津贴) to parents who take time off work to care for a third child.
When Japan announced in June that its population had shrunk in 2005 for the first time, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said, “The data must be accepted seriously.”
On Friday, Japan announced that it is now the world’s most elderly nation, with more than a fifth of its people 65 or older. Italy is the second.

The “only child” generation is coming of age, as they become parents, according to a recent survey. The young parents tend to be better prepared for raising their children than older generations, despite previously having been criticized as “little emperors and queens” during their childhood, an expert says.
The survey, conducted by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, found some 40 per cent of 1,800 young parents aged 20 to 40 are the only child in their families. The figure is expected to reach a peak in the next five to six years, as a census(人口普查) in 1982 indicated that more than 81 per cent of children born that year are the only child at home.
“Differences are obvious in many aspects between only-child parents (OCP) and non-only-child parents (NOCP),” said Bao Leiping, a doctor with the Institute of Youth and Juvenile Studies under the social sciences academy.
Approximately 17 per cent of OCPs preferred a career when asked to choose between a career and children. The figure for NOCPs is about 11 percent. “The only-child-turned parents put more emphasis on themselves than NOCPs, and are more dependent,” said Bao.
More than 45 per cent of OCPs live with their parents compared with 28 percent among NOCPs. “The grandparents shoulder a lot of responsibilities for OCPs, which allows them more time and energy to explore new ways to educate their babies,” she said.
Some 46 per cent of OCPs have used the Internet to search for information about education, 7.2 per cent higher than NOCPs. In addition, OCPs put more emphasis on educating their children on values, manners and social conduct.

What is the color of the universe Astronomers had not answered this question until two months ago. That is when two American astronomers reported on their study of all the light in the universe. They said that the universe would appear to the human eye to be a light greenish color, called turquoise(青绿色).
Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, reported their finding in January. They presented the research at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. They said that finding the color of the universe was not part of their serious scientific research. They did it for fun.
However, earlier this month, the scientists admitted to making a mistake. They said their finding was much more colorful than it should have been. They now say the light from our universe is closer to white. It is more like a milky or creamy white color.
Their study attempted to show what people might see if they could observe the universe from far away. The scientists found the average color by combining light from about two-hundred-thousand star systems. Their information came from an observatory in New South Wales, Australia.
These scientists and color engineers attempted to reproduce the result. Mark Fairchild of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York was the first person to identify a mistake. He discovered a mistake in the computer software program used by the Johns Hopkins scientists.
When the mistake was corrected, the results changed. The new color of the universe is much less colorful. It is very close to white. The scientists have apologized for the mistake. They are now working with the Rochester Institute of Technology to produce more images of the color of the universe. They also asked for suggestions for a name for the new color of the universe.

George Washington, the “Father of America”, was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father died when George was eleven and he did not attend school regularly, but he acquired basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills. He did not attend university. When he was 16, George moved to Lawrence’s estate, Mount Vernon, and ten years later, he married a young widow, Martha, and adopted her two children. Washington had no children of his own.
George received his first military appointment as a major in the militia(民兵队伍) during the French and Indian War (1754). In 1758 Washington was elected to the House of Burgesses and expressed his opposition to Britain’s unfair taxes and land laws. He was active in resisting British rule. When the Revolutionary War began (1775) the Continental Congress asked George Washington to be the commander in chief of the Continental army.
With a force of about 10,000 men, he faced a difficult winter (1777-1778) at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. They had little food and were poorly clothed. Those who survived until spring were pleased to learn that France had recognized America’s independence. With aid from France, the troops were able to trap the main British force at Yorktown (1781). After the war, Washington returned home to Mount Vernon.
George Washington was a member of the Federalist Party, believing in a strong central American government. His popularity caused him to be elected president of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and in 1789 he became the first president of the United States. He was elected to a second term, with John Adams serving as vice president. He refused to run for a third term as president.

第四节 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

If your family is like many in the United States, unloading the week’s groceries includes hauling a case or two of bottled water into your home. On your way to a soccer game or activity, it’s easy to grab a cold one right out of the fridge, right
But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the environment. In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world, adding 29 billion water bottles a year to the problem. In order to make all these bottles, manufacturers use 17 million barrels of crude oil. That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.
Imagine a water bottle filled a quarter of the way up with oil. That’s about how much oil was needed to produce the bottle.
So why don’t more people drink water straight from the kitchen faucet Some people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them than water out of the tap, but that’s not true. In the United States, local governments make sure water from the faucet is safe. There is also growing concern that chemicals in the bottles themselves may leach into the water.
People love the convenience of bottled water. But maybe if they realized the problems it causes, they would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a refillable steel container instead of plastic.
Plastic bottle recycling can help—instead of going out with the trash, plastic bottles can be turned into items like carpeting or cozy fleece clothing.
Unfortunately, for every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as trash on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate.
Water is good for you, so keep drinking it. But think about how often you use water bottles, and see if you can make a change.
Betty McLaughlin, who runs an organization called the Container Recycling Institute, says we should try using fewer bottles: “If you take one to school in your lunch, don’t throw it away—bring it home and refill it from the tap for the next day. Keep track of how many times you refill a bottle before you recycle it.”
And yes, you can make a difference. Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours.

Great Changes
The activity of being a good student and good citizen has been held since the beginning of this term in our school. Everybody has taken an active part in it. In the past, we didn’t have the habit of keeping our classroom tidy and even threw waste here and there. We even weren’t polite enough to our teachers and sometimes forgot to greet them. While doing shopping or waiting for a bus, some of us jumped the queue instead of obeying the rules.
But now everyone is willing to do cleaning and to sort the waste before throwing it into dustbins. Everybody shows great respect for our teachers and sometimes helps them with something. In public places, we try to wait in line and offer our seats to the old on the bus.
What great changes have taken place! We do hope every student can keep it up.牛津高三模块十unit3 单元试题

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible—and it can be surprisingly 16 to your physical and 17 health.
“People who always forgive others 18 less depression, anger and stress and more hopefulness,” says Frederic Luskin, Ph.D., the 19 of Forgive for Good. “So it can help 20 on the wear and tear on our organs, reduce the wearing out of the immune(免疫的) system and 21 people to feel more vital.”
So how do you start the forgiveness Try 22 these steps:
Calm yourself. To defuse your 23 , try a simple stress-management technique. “Take a couple of breaths and think of 24 that gives you pleasure: a 25 scene in nature, someone you love,” Luskin says.
Don’t 26 an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you has no 27 of apologizing,” Luskin says. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same 28 . So if you wait for people to apologize you could be waiting a(n) 29 long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean 30 to the person who upsets you.
Take the control away from your offender. Mentally replaying(重播) your 31 gives power to the person who caused you pain. “ 32 focusing on your hurt feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness 33 you,” Luskin says.
Try to see things from the other person’s view. If you empathize(把感情移入) with that person, you may 34 that he or she was acting out of ignorance, fear—even love.
Recognize the benefits of forgiveness. Research has shown that people who always forgive others will get more energy, better 35 and better sleep.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself.“For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge,” Luskin says. But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.”

We’d been flying for hours, deeper and deeper into the desert of southeastern Niger. The mission: to find what is probably the last wild population of the great Saharan antelope called the addax (旋角羚)—the most endangered animal of its size in Africa.
Pilot Peter Ragg flew our bright red helicopter low over two parallel dunes (沙丘). The pale sand below us was dotted by the black bushes, the plants that are favorite food for the addax. Then, almost as if the dune extruded (使突出) them, two perfect addaxes appeared. Their long tails swung from side to side as they ran, heads held high on thick necks, horns reaching for the sky. We made a few turns in the plane, then let them be. In just a few seconds they were swallowed again by the Sahara. Soon they could just as easily disappear from the planet.
In September 2004 the government of Niger and a small NGO called SOS Faune du Niger surveyed this last known pocket of wild addaxes. They counted 128 individuals. Since then, the number has dropped as hunters have taken more for meat. How many addaxes remain in the Sahara is anybody’s guess, but those that do survive could be considered the living dead: There may not be a viable (能生存的) population left to reproduce.
I’m now helping to make an emergency plan for the last wild addaxes. With a few hundred thousand dollars, some trucks, and a strong group with the local Toubou guides, we may just be able to save these guys from extinction.
36. What do the addaxes in the passage usually eat
A. Vegetables. B. Black bushes. C. Grass. D. Fruits.
37. All of the following descriptions of the addax are true EXCEPT that ____.
A. its tail is long B. its neck is thick
C. its legs are short D. its horns are long
38. What does the writer probably mean by saying that “There may not be a viable population left to reproduce”
A. Wild addaxes will die out soon unless effective measures are taken.
B. The number of wild addaxes will increase if they are not hunted.
C. Wild addaxes cannot support themselves any longer.
D. Humans cannot survive without enough addaxes.
39. It can be inferred that the writer of the passage might be ____.
A. a journalist B. an official C. an engineer D. a zoologist

Although the weathermen’s forecasts for a month ahead are only little better than guesswork, they are now making long-term forecasts into the next century with growing confidence. The main trend in the world’s climate in the coming years will, scientists say, be a predictable result of man’s activities.
At the start of the industrial revolution nearly two centuries ago, man set off a big experiment in planetary engineering. Unaware of what he was doing, he spared no thought for the consequences. Today the possible outcome is alarmingly clear, but the experiment is unstoppable. Within the lifetime of many of us, the Earth may become warmer than it has been for a thousand years. By the middle of this century it may be warmer than it has been since the last Ice Age.
A warmer climate may seem welcome, but it could bring many dangers: damages to crops in the world’s main food-producing areas, famine(饥荒), economic instability, civil unrest and even war.
In the much longer term, melting of the great ice-caps of Greenland and Antarctica could raise sea-levels throughout the world. The average sea-level has already risen a foot since the turn of the last century, and if the ice-caps disappear completely, it would rise by nearly 200 plete melting might take many centuries, but even a small increase in sea-level would threaten low-lying parts of the world such as the Netherlands.
44. Long-term weather forecasts beyond the year 2050 may seem strange because ____.
A. none of us will be alive then
B. weathermen can even forecast next month’s weather correctly
C. weathermen can forecast much better than they used to

45. Weathermen believe that our future climate will be the direct result of ____.
A. the big scientific experiment B. clever long-term forecasts
C. the melting of the ice-caps D. planets changing course

A. an increase in food production
B. greater co-operation between countries
C. the death of millions of people from starvation
D. a reduction in the amount of oil we use
47. Scientists are fairly sure that by the year 2050, _______.
A. the sea-level will have risen obviously
B. there will have been the Third World War
C. most countries will have been flooded
D. the polar ice-caps will have melted completely

You may have never heard of Ladislao Biro, but you have certainly heard of the pen he invented—the ballpoint pen, or biro. Before Biro invented his pen, people wrote with fountain pens. The ink smudged(弄脏) and blotted and the pens sometimes leaked. In the 1930s Biro was a magazine editor in Budapest in Hungary. He noticed that the inks which the magazine’s printers used dried very quickly. Biro wondered if quick-drying inks could be used in pens. He came up with the idea of a tube of ink with a free-moving ball on the end. As a person wrote, the ball collected ink from the tube and rolled it on to the paper. The pen would be cheap and could be thrown away when the ink ran out.
Biro began to work on his invention, but before he could patent it the Second World War broke out. Biro left war-torn Europe and fled to Buenos Aires in Argentina. There, he and his brother Georg, who was a chemist, began to improve the pen. In the early 1940s Biro began to manufacture his new pen, the biro. In 1944, he sold his invention to another company, who began to mass-produce the pen for the British and American armed forces.
Biro was pleased that his pen was popular, but he did not gain much from his invention. The biro was later sold to the French firm, Bic, who now sell twelve million pens a day. Biro sank into obscurity in South America. His name, however, has become a household word.

It is impossible to think about “growing up” in modern America without considering “youth culture” which every young person—even those who do not attend public schools—is confronted by and must deal with. It is impossible to be so isolated that we are untouched by the surrounding culture. Nor should we wish to be—as we are called to be—salt and light in a very confused and broken world. Popular culture deserves neither uncritical acceptance nor knee-jerk rejection, but thoughtful critique(批评).
On the contrary, China paid too little attention to youth culture in the past. However, with society developing, more and more people have realized the importance of analyzing, understanding and promoting youth culture.
About 100,000 young Chinese people from all over the world will attend the first China Youth Culture Week scheduled to open Saturday in Shenzhen’s China Folk Culture Villages, a press conference was told Thursday.
A series of cultural activities will be staged from Saturday to Wednesday, including a huge performance expected to challenge for a listing in the Guinness Book of World Records.
About 10,000 young people will attend the opening ceremony Saturday. A final list of the Chinese Youth Idol Award to five outstanding young Chinese was announced at the conference. They are the country’s first astronaut, Yang Liwei, Chinese NBA star, Yao Ming, IT entrepreneur, Ding Lei, anchorperson, Wu Xiaoli, and Olympic Games gold medalist, Deng Yaping. The youth idols were selected by
Chinese teenagers with 380,000 votes cast nationwide.
During the past two months, the organizers received more than 3,000 applications from young people in Hong Kong and Macao who wanted to take part in the performance.

The Hong Kong government is set to overhaul(革新) its immigration policy with the aim of making it easier for mainland and overseas talents to live and work in the city. This is a welcome step because it will remove what is widely seen as a major hurdle to Hong Kong’s efforts to attract qualified immigrants to help its development.
To sustain the growth of the services sector, which accounts for nearly 80 percent of Hong Kong’s GDP, it is necessary to continuously expand the pool of talents in various fields. Efforts to attract mainland and overseas talents to Hong Kong are taking on special urgency not only because of fierce competition from other cities, particularly Singapore, but also the rapidly aging population resulting from years of low or negative birthrates.
Hong Kong enjoys certain distinct advantages over many Asian cities in the competition for talents. Beyond its vibrant economy, underlined by a free market environment, Hong Kong has a combination of some of the most distinctive elements of Chinese and Western cultures. Hong Kong is as exciting as many other Asian boomtowns, and yet it is no less efficient than a typical European city with a much smaller population. Housing costs are high, but no higher than those in other financial centers. For international banks and multinational corporations, housing costs are a concern only when the opportunity to make money begins to dry up. And this situation is not happening in Hong Kong as the local economy, riding the boom on the mainland, is rapidly expanding.
It is within this context that the government takes the lead to revise its immigration policy, which calls for, among other things, the establishment of a one-stop service center to process all applications under various migrant schemes. This means that an applicant will in future need to submit only one form for processing. Other changes to the policy include the removing of the age restrictions and lowering of experience requirements. Under the present scoring system used to vet applicants, those who are older than 50 and those with less than five years of work experience win no points in their respective categories. The details of the proposed changes have not been announced. But according to a government official quoted by the local press, the aim is to broaden the pool of qualified applicants.
The HK government’s revising its immigration policy
Aims It aims to (56) _______ the pool of qualified immigrants and attract talents to help its development.

Pennsylvania potato growers have voted to increase funding for a producer-financed research program that will help improve potato quality, production and profitability, Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff said.
The members voted to increase the Pennsylvania Potato Research Program’s annual assessment from $4-per-acre(英亩) to $5-per-acre.
“This investment in research will help growers remain competitive and produce more high-quality potatoes,” Wolff said. “Thanks to this program, potato growers will have new information on production techniques, allowing them to generate higher yields (产量) and enjoy greater economic benefits.”
Wolff, a member of the panel (评判小组), said the new fee will take effect on July 1, 2007. The Department of Agriculture has administrative responsibility for the program and has listed the results of the referendum (公民投票) in the Pennsylvania Bulletin. Affected growers have been informed, in accordance with the law.
For 2007, potato research includes a $24, 249 grant (补助金) from Penn State University’s germplasma evaluation program to develop more weather and disease resistant potatoes and a $2, 000 Cornell University grant to continue developing new varieties for Pennsylvania potato chip growers.

When Chato’s barking didn’t stir Jerrica Seals, the recently-adopted dog tried nibbling (轻咬) on the teenager’s leg, to get the girl out of her burning home.
No one was hurt. Fort Myers firefighters responded at about 7 a.m.
“(Seals) called me screaming,” said Leticia Vega, 36, the sister of Seals’ boyfriend, Javier Garcia, 23, who owns the home. She said the dog woke her up barking, jumped on the bed and bit her on the leg.
Vega also said that Garcia’s brother Gabriel brought Chato home several weeks ago after the animal wandered onto a Lehigh Acres construction site. Since then Chato had been mostly quiet—until it mattered. “He doesn’t usually bark. He’s really friendly.”
Five people live in the Garcia home. That was neighbor Janice Hamilton’s main concern when she looked out of her window Friday and saw the flames. “I just threw my pants on to run outside and make sure they knew how many people lived there,” Hamilton said. “It was scary.”
Possibly, the fire started because of an inadequate extension cord(电缆) used on a window air conditioner, Deputy fire Chief Steve Clyatt said.
More than half of the home was burned down, Clyatt said. There is extensive smoke and water damage in the remainder of the structure, he said. Estimates for repair costs were unavailable.
“I’d say it’s unlikely they will recover this, but I’ve been surprised before,” Clyatt said.

My Favorite Sneaker
Stephen:
Personally, I like Adidas better. Especially the plain, white, (very) low-tops that were great before. Eminem made everybody buy them so they’d look like him. I’d like to buy another pair of them, but I can’t find them in any conventional (常规的) shoe stores.
Justin:
I’ve actually bought the same pair of sneakers (New Balance M991) three times in a row now. Besides, my favorite pair of sneakers would have to be one of the earlier Jordan models.
Hasan:
I love finding small less known sneakers. Not a fan of the Nikes ($100/pair!) Here’s a pair of $30 (at Marshall’s) Merrell light camping shoes I’ve worn almost daily for a year.
Andy:
I currently have two pairs of Adidas Stan Smith, which are even cleaner than the Superstar. Had Stan’s for several years now, very comfortable. And they just look better than the older they get!
Darice:
Here in the Netherlands the old school Nikes are back. These are from the 80’s I guess, so the Nike Air Darwin came after that. Maybe they are next in line to be sold again. Personally I’m more for Puma, Adidas and Skechers. All these shoes have lasted me a year without looking old and worn. Right now I have my eye on the new Adidas with Goodyear platform. Really expensive but very classy (时髦的).
Brian:
Just last night I bought a pair of Vans TNT sneakers online. Pretty expensive ($75), but I like the way they look, and it’s really hard for me to find shoes that I don’t hate. I got them from , and they were kind enough to upgrade my shipping for free.

It has been said before, but experiencing it myself has made me want to say it again: a smile can cross all language barriers.
I recently moved from Canada to a small city in South Korea to work as an English teacher. My first few weeks in Chinhae were challenging. I knew only one fluent English speaker other than myself —my employer. So having left my family and friends far away on a different continent and having moved to a city in which I was the only foreign English teacher, I felt a bit shaken.
At the grocery stores, I could not read the food packages and certainly did not know how to ask for help. ________. Such little frustrations began to add up and I soon felt homesick and tired. I longed for some familiar sounds, anything familiar!
One night, after a long day at work, I was feeling particularly weary —my legs were aching and I wasn’t looking forward to cooking dinner. Just as I was about to push the key into the door, the old woman who was the landlady called me and signed me into her apartment. I didn’t understand a word she said, but I understood her smile. I followed her into her kitchen, which smelled like the wonderful Korean foods I was becoming to love. After she had put many dishes of food on the table and had set me up with a glass of cola, she sat down across from me. We were both laughing the whole time at our complete inability to start a conversation, though. It went something like this:
“Canada ” She asked slowly, pointing at my chest.
“Yes,” I answered.
“Korea ” I said, pointing at her. We both laughed.
When it was time to leave, I said “Thank you” in Korean, using some of the few words I had learned. I went home to my apartment feeling less alone than I had expected to feel that evening. Chinhae felt less like a strange and frightening place, and more like a home. I don’t think the old landlady knew how much her smile and her wonderful food meant to me that evening, but perhaps someday I will be able to tell her.

D. she had difficulty in teaching English in Korea

54. The underlined word “weary” (in Paragraph 4) most probably means “____”.
A. tired B. lonely C. homesick D. exhibition
55. From the passage we can infer that ____.
A. the writer would soon move back home
B. the writer was deeply moved by the old woman

As is known to all, Father Christmas is said to live in the north part of Finland, a world of ice and snow. Every Christmas, he comes down from the chimney and delivers gifts to people, especially kids who put their stockings at the end of their beds before going to sleep on Christmas Eve. They believe that Father Christmas is sure to come and put lovely gifts in their stockings while actually it is their parents who do that.
In fact, Father Christmas we see today dressed in red and wearing white beard was created by an American cartoon maker named Thomas Nash in the 1860s. This image was loved by people and soon adopted by the whole world. As time goes by, Father Christmas has become a symbol of happiness and fun. Therefore, Father Christmas serves as the symbolic ambassador for shops and firms to promote their product sales.

How old was I I can’t recall. Maybe I was only 10, about to turn 11, making it the first Christmas after my father left, and left me to fill that sad, shattered place in my mother’s heart. Whenever it was, it was the Christmas the magic changed: the year I stopped being a wide-eyed child and tried eagerly to play Father Christmas myself. It was the Christmas of the coat.
Mom first saw the coat at Tobias, one of the nicer women’s stores in our town’s little mall. It was a deep forest green. A long, heavy, wool dress coat with side pockets. Mom pulled it out from the rack(架) and held it up. “Long enough,”she murmured and slipped it on.
“I need a new coat,” Mom smiled before the three-way mirror. She made any clothing look good, and this coat hugged her just right. She glanced at the price tag, then hung the coat back on the rack, pausing once more to feel the smooth brush of wool.
Eighty-seven dollars. But I didn’t think twice. As we moved on through the mall, I found some excuse to come back and ask one of the Tobias ladies to hold the coat.
At last I had the coat. The store ladies wrapped it in their biggest box with bright blue paper and a thick silver ribbon. I don’t remember how I got it home, but I can still feel the bursting excitement and pride that filled me each time I glimpsed at the beautifully wrapped gift hiding under my sweater. I would occasionally dig it out just to hold the box, to imagine the big space it would take up under our tree. Here it was ─ joy, peace, and love ─ all wrapped up, waiting for Mom’s loving gratitude.

In 1891, a man named James Naismith was teaching physical education at a school in Springfield. One long, cold winter, he had to create a game for 18 young men to play indoors. So the Canadian-born Naismith wrote some rules.
Rule number one: “The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.” Two: “The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands (never with the fist).”
In all, there were 13 rules— the original rules of basketball. James Naismith is recognized as the inventor of basketball.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches established the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the northeastern United States in 1949. It opened in 1968 at Springfield College. A new, larger building opened in 1985. And, four years ago, the Hall of Fame moved into a newer building, just south of its former home. The new building increased the size by almost one hundred percent.
Honors ring in Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Basketball Hall of Fame is a museum and entertainment center. It combines history with technology. And it tries to capture the energy and excitement of the game. In the Center Court area, for example, visitors can play interactive games of basketball and take part in skill competitions.
The Hall of Fame explores basketball at every level of the game. Visitors learn about professional basketball in the United States and other countries. They learn about women’s teams and how the game is played at the college level. They also learn about basketball for disabled people.
The Hall of Fame honors the best players, teams, coaches and officials in basketball. Earlier this month, six more honorees joined the more than 250 people in the Hall of Fame. The six new members are Geno Auriemma, Charles Barkley, Joe Dumars, Sandro Gamba, David Gavitt and Dominique Wilkins.

Violent gangs. Bar fights. Broken bones. No, we aren’t talking about a late night in Downtown Chico; we’re talking about the things that come to many people’s minds when the word, motorcycle, is mentioned.
Many Chico State students have learned of the convenience of small motorcycles and scooters when it comes to parking on or near campus. Motorcycle parking is something that is available when compared to the amount of vacant automotive parking—something especially valuable when running a bit late for class. Motorcycle-riding students have also learned to appreciate the 50 to 80 average miles per gallon, especially today when it seems as if gasoline prices are shooting up faster and more often than a back alley addict.
Still, some people are reluctant to ride the steel horse. Marc Lewis, a 24-year-old Chico State anthropology student, is one of those people. “I’ve had motorcycles in the past. I know what they’re about. I want another one, for recreational purposes,” Lewis said. The only things holding Lewis back are insurance costs and what he refers to as “unsafe drivers”. Safety and insurance costs certainly are important factors.
Chris Kelley, employee of Cost-U-Less Insurance Center at 166 Cohasset Road, Suite 3, admits that motorcycle insurance can get pricey. The average price per month for Chico State students in their 20s is about $100, Kelley said. “The most expensive rate I’ve ever charged was something like $32,000 a year,” Kelley said. “The guy had a horrible record.”
If a motorcycle is something that you’ve always been curious about but have been frightened by the dangerous image it is often given, try rethinking your position. Motorcycling is one of the most diverse activities in existence. Consider the information you find here a brief introduction to several of the more popular aspects of motorcycle riding.
44. When it comes to motorcycles, one tends to think of ____.
A. a late night in Downtown Chico B. the horse made of steel

A. Because they often have their bones broken.
B. Because they are worried about the costly insurance and safety problems.
C. Because they have to pay for the pricey gasoline.
D. Because they don’t want to ride it for entertainment.
47. The writer intends to tell us in the last paragraph that ____.
A. we shouldn’t buy a motorcycle due to the danger it causes
B. many people are frightened by the dangerous image
C. we shouldn’t be curious about the motorcycle any more
D. motorcycles are still popular regardless of the disadvantages

As many as 60,000 people worldwide die each year from too much sun, but simple safety steps could prevent many deaths, according to a World Health Organization report.
The report, released on Wednesday, was treated as the first overall look at the global health burden from UV radiation, which is linked to up to 90 percent of melanoma(恶性黑色素瘤) and other skin cancers. UV radiation can also cause sunburn, more rapid skin aging, eye diseases, and reactivation of the herpes(疱疹) virus that causes cold sores, and pterygium, a fleshy growth on the surface of the eye.
“We all need some sun, but too much sun can be dangerous—and even deadly,” said Dr Maria Neira, the director of WHO’s agency of public health and the environment, who released the report.
To prevent cancer and other diseases linked to UV radiation, the agency recommends that people:
— Limit time in the midday sun.
— Use shade wisely and seek shade when UV rays are most intense.
— Wear protective clothing, hats and sunglasses.
— Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor 15+.
— Avoid sunlamps and tanning parlours.
People under age 18 should not use them at all.
“The application of sunscreens should not be used to prolong sun exposure but rather to protect the skin when exposure is unavoidable,” the report warned.
The report also noted that the ground’s surface can make a difference:
— Fresh snow reflects as much as 80 percent of ultraviolet light.
— Sea foam reflects about 25 percent.
— Dry beach sand reflects about 15 percent.
Small amounts of exposure to the sun help the skin to produce vitamin D.

C. he should wear good sunglasses D. he be equipped with sun protection
51. Which of the following can be the headline of the passage

An important scientific report announced “irrefutable(不能反驳的) proof” that climate change is happening and it’s all our fault. How long has it been before people are against the global warming idea But here’s a funny thing. Last year there was a very bad hurricane season in the Caribbean when, among other disasters, New Orleans was all but wiped off the map. We were wisely informed by the experts at the time that this was owing to global warming.
I remember watching a BBC science programme and hearing a learned professor with a beard tell us, “The increased frequency and strength of hurricanes is what we shall have to learn to expect given global warming.”
This year there have been far fewer hurricanes and those there have been were relatively mild. Why?Global warming again of course. Professor Bjorn Lomborg, author of The Skeptical Environmentalist, writes, “In the constant media reports of possible greenhouse related disasters, almost any event is now linked to climate change.” He adds, “We should not spend vast amounts of money to cut a tiny slice of the global temperature increase when this leads to a poor use of resources and when we could probably use these funds far more effectively in the developing world.” For saying this, Lomborg has had death threats.
Other scientists who do not toe the global warming-is-happening-and-it’s-all-our-fault line have received the same. There are plenty of people who count against global warming. A world of senior climatologists and meteorologists wrote to the Times last year to complain that they couldn’t get their research findings published — because they disagreed to it. We have had a warm autumn. The experts, fanatics(狂热者) all of them, put it down to global warming. If we have an extra cold winter, they will tell us it’s a result of global warming. If my big toe feels cold or hurts badly, it will be owing to global warming.
52. The purpose of this passage may be to ____.
A. support the idea of global warming
B. organize a debate about global warming
C. speak out against the global warming idea
D. encourage people to use money effectively
53. What happened to New Orleans last year
A. It was badly destroyed. B. It disappeared in the world.
C. It witnessed global warming. D. It experienced several disasters.
54. From the passage, we can infer that ____.
A. people are taking too many efforts to stop global warming
B. people have realized the side effect of development
C. a different idea sometimes may cost one his life
D. the majority usually stand for the correct opinion
55. The main idea of the last paragraph may be ____.
A. global warming may lead to toe’s catching cold in a sense
B. the Times refuses to publish articles on global warming
C. a warming autumn is not related to global warming at all
D. it is certainly incorrect to owe everything to global warming

You may have heard the term “the American Dream”. In 1848, James W. Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams. That 19th century “American Dream” caused the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname(绰号) of the “Golden State”.
The American Dream drove not only 1800s gold-rush prospectors (淘金者) but also waves of immigrants throughout that century and the next. People from Europe, and a large number of Chinese, arrived in the US in the 19th century hoping that in America they would find gold in the streets. But most, instead, worked as railroad labourers. They created the oldest Chinatown, in San Francisco, and gave the city a Chinese name “the old gold hill”.
In the 20th century, some critics (评论家) said that it was no longer possible to become rich through determination and hard work. Unfair education for students from poor families and racial discrimination (歧视) almost made the American Dream a nightmare (噩梦).
Then, in the 1990s, California saw a new wave of dreamers in Silicon Valley. People poured their energy into the Internet. This new chapter of the American Dream attracted many business people and young talents from China and India to form start-ups and seek fortunes in America.
Better pay, a nice house, and a rising standard of living will always be attractive. However, the new American Dream is no longer just about money. It encourages Americans to use money with a plan, protect the environment, raise the quality of life, and promote social justice.
The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has become the model of the new American Dream. After years of hard work, he grew from a poor young man from Austria into a movie superstar and then governor. Many people hope his story can save the American Dream and give California a brighter future.

What will the cars in the future be like In shape they will be more or less the same as they are today, but they will become smaller in size. However, cars in the future can travel faster. Besides, in the future all the cars will be powered by solar energy, which means they will cause no pollution and be environmentally friendly. Further more, in the future cars can be driven without people because robots will control them. They can both be used as cars on the road and as boats on the surface of water when it is necessary. Finally, what is most important is that cars in the future will be guided by a computer system, which will make the drivers feel most relaxed while driving. What’s more, they will be equipped with computer programs that help to reduce the rate of road accidents close to zero, making the ride great fun.
