The first American immigrants, beginning more than 20,000 years ago, were intercontinental wanderers: hunters and their families following animal herds from Asia to America, across a land bridge where the Bering Strait is today. When Spain's Christopher Columbus "discovered" the New World in 1492, some 1.5 million Native Americans lived in what is now the continental United States, although estimates of the number vary greatly. Mistaking the place where he landed -- San Salvador in the Bahamas -- for the Indies, Columbus called the Native Americans "Indians."
During the next 200 years, people from several European countries followed Columbus across the Atlantic Ocean to explore America and set up trading posts and colonies. Native Americans suffered greatly from the influx of Europeans. The transfer of land from Indian to European -- and later American -- hands was accomplished through treaties, wars, and coercion, with Indians constantly giving way as the newcomers moved west. In the 19th century, the government's preferred solution to the Indian "problem" was to force tribes to inhabit specific plots of land called reservations. Some tribes fought to keep from giving up land they had traditionally used. In many cases the reservation land was of poor quality, and Indians came to depend on government assistance. Poverty and joblessness among Native Americans still exist today.
Today Native Americans number about two million (0.8 percent of the total U.S. population), and only about one-third still live on reservations. Countless American place-names derive from Indian words, including the states of Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, and Idaho. Indians taught Europeans how to cultivate crops that are now staples throughout the world: corn, tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco. Canoes, snowshoes, and moccasins are among the Indians' many inventions.
56.According to the passage , which statement is not mentioned

Zheng He (1371-1435) is arguably China's most famous navigator. Starting from the beginning of the 15th century, he traveled to the West in seven epic voyages collectively referred to as the "Eunuch Sanbao to the Western Ocean" from 1405 to 1433. For 28 years, he traveled more than 50,000km and visited over 30 countries, throughout South Pacific, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf and distant Africa. Columbus sailed to America in St. Maria in 1492, some 80 years after Zheng's voyages. Life magazine ranked Zheng the 14th most important person of the last millennium.
Zheng was a Muslim eunuch who served as a close confidant of the Yongle Emperor of China, the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Originally named Ma Sanbao, he came from Yunnan Province. Both his father and grandfather had traveled on pilgrimage to Mecca. After the Ming army conquered Yunnan, he was taken captive with the name Zheng He given by the emperor. He studied at the Imperial College. His missions showed impressive demonstrations of organizational capability and technological might, but did not lead to significant trade, since he was an admiral and an official, not a merchant.
China has a very old seafaring tradition. Chinese ships had sailed to India as early as the Han Dynasty. Chinese sailors had the compass to help them. Zheng constructed many wooden ships, some of which are the largest in the history. His flag "treasure ship" is four hundred feet long - much larger than Columbus's. Zheng's achievements show that China had the ships and navigational skills to explore the world. Mysteriously, China did not follow up on these voyages. The Chinese destroyed their oceangoing ships and halted further expeditions. Thus, a century later, Europeans would "discover" China, instead of the Chinese "discovering" Europe.

One hot night last July, when our new baby wouldn’t or couldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of, a warm bottle, songs, gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I bought a portable TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill off the hours until dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, his little eyes focused brightly on the tube. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi’s forty-fifth birthday.
My wife and I heard none of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.
I found in my baby’s behavior a metaphor for the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit upon (不屑一顾) them, When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We found that our students don’t read and they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watching TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “ Let then watch it!” If television is that much more attractive to children than books , why should we fight it Let them watch it as they want!

“Melting pot” means a place where people from many different ethnic groups or cultures form a united society. The idea comes from heating metals in a container. When they melt, the metals unite and become something new and stronger. The term has been used to describe the United States as a nation created from people who came here from many different countries.
A Frenchman who was living in America expressed the idea more than two hundred years ago. J. Hector de Crevecoeur published a book called “Letters From an American Farmer” in 1782.He wrote that America had people from many different countries. He said that they would become a new people whose work would one day change the world.
For many years, Americans generally accepted the idea of their country as a melting pot. They welcomed immigrants from many nations. Yet some of those immigrants criticized the melting pot idea. They felt they were forced to lose their culture and language in order to be accepted in America. Other people also criticized the idea. They said the aim of the melting pot is to make different cultures disappear into the one representing the largest group.
New groups of immigrants from Asia and Latin America are changing the United States today. Some are resisting learning American culture and language. Reports say some Americans fear that the nation is separating into many groups that have no shared purpose. Others say the melting pot is no longer changing the nation’s immigrants, but the immigrants are changing America.
Some experts who study immigration say they now compare American society not with a melting pot, but with a salad bowl. A salad is made of many different foods. They each keep their own taste while being part of a successful product. In this way, cultural groups keep their customs and language and are still part of American society.
68.According to the text, which statement is wrong

Like people of other ethnicities, the Chinese immigrated to the United States for better lives. Before 1900, their work included farming, mining and building railroads. Men sent money home to their families in China.
But American laborers resented the Chinese because the latter were willing to work for cheap wages. Americans accused the Chinese of monopolizing jobs.
Stiff immigration laws were passed. Many Chinese immigrants were forced to prove they had a husband or father who was a U. S. citizen or be deported.
From 1910-1940, Chinese immigrants were detained(拘留) and questioned at Angel Island immigration station in San Francisco Bay. U.S. officials hoped to deport as many as possible by asking obscure questions about Chinese villages and family histories that immigrants would have trouble answering correctly.
Men and women were housed separately. Detainees spent much of their time in the barracks, languishing(受苦) between interrogations(审问).
The immigrants expressed their fears and frustrations through messages and poems written or carved into barrack walls. Some poems are still visible at the museum today.
Immigrants were detained weeks, months, sometimes even years. Word got back to China about the prolonged questioning, so people would try to mentally prepare before even crossing the Pacific Ocean.
A 1940 fire destroyed the Angel Island administration building, so the U.S. government abandoned the immigration station. The so-called "Chinese Exclusion Acts" eventually were repealed(withdrawed). Over the years, Chinese have settled in every U.S. city.
Many years have passed. But many Chinese still recall the hardships of detention.
At Angel Island, a museum has been established in the old barracks, re- creating one of the living areas for Chinese detainees.
71.Which is not the reaction of Americans labors to the Chinese
American laborers resented the Chinese because the latter were willing to work for cheap wages.
Americans accused the Chinese of controlling jobs.
Americans passed stiff immigration laws
Americans put many Chinese into prisons.
What is the meaning of deport in the third paragraph
A. legally force foreigners/criminals to leave. B. go away

According to the passage, which statement is wrong
A. Many Chinese immigrants were forced to prove they had a husband or father who was a
U. S. citizen, otherwise they were to be departed.
B. Detainees spent much of their time in the barracks, suffering a lot between interrogations
C. We can see some poems expressing Chinese fears and frustrations at the museum today.
D. Today many Chinese have forgotten the hardships of detention.

A. A lot of Chinese people opposed "Chinese Exclusion Acts", so the U.S. government abandoned it.

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burn it before. A really fearless soldier – and some do exist – is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might die out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: an airplane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the beams in your roof so that the latter falls on you, or you may get cancer!
The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course, of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.

BEIJING, March 14 -- The language spoken by the Li ethnic group in the southernmost Chinese province of Hainan is now threatened with extinction due to the prevalence of putonghua, the standard and official Chinese language, experts have warned.
No more than 500,000 among the 1 million Li people in Hainan can speak authentic Li language or dialect, according to experts with the Hainan Provincial Committee of China Association for Promoting Democracy, which is mainly composed of intellectuals working in the fields of culture, education, publication and science.
Li dialect, a language unique to the island province, is also the most unique language in the Zhuang-Dong branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The latest studies show that it has a close relationship with languages of Malay in Malaysia, Tagalog in the Philippines, and Gaoshan dialect in China's island province Taiwan.
Research into the dialect will be of great help to study the immigration history of Hainan people, and their relationship with other ethnic groups in Southeast Asian nations, experts said.
Experts with the committee suggested linguists fully study the Li language by recording existing folk tales and songs of the ethnic group.
They also advised the local government to set up a special task force and allocate special funds to preserve the endangered Li dialect.
The Li people, together with the Zhuang, Bouyei, Dong and Dai ethnic groups, can trace their origins back to the ancient "Yue" people who inhabited the areas which are now South China's Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Yue people moved to the Hainan Island and became the Li ethnic group. However, the Li people's language is different from that spoken by other descendants of the Yue people, who live in other parts of the country. A written form for the Li language was worked out in 1957.

Reading is thought to be a kind of conservation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.
For most of the time this “conservation” goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we become aware of it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatching is occurring between expectation and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced , our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.
Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers. There is another conservation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is not to do with what is read but how it is read. We call this a “process” conservation as opposed to a “content” conservation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are an advanced reader, our ability to hold a content conservation with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our ability to hold a process conservation. It is precisely this kind of conservation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.
72.What do you think it in the second paragraph refer to
A. conservation B. consciousness C. questions D. mismatching
73. Reading as a kind of conservation between the reader and the text becomes conscious only when______________.
the reader had trouble understanding what the author says.
the reader’s expectation agrees with what is said in the text
the reader asks questions and gets answers.
the reader understands a text very well.
74.A “process” conservation is connected with ______.
A. the development of our ability to check the detail.
B. matching our expectation with the meaning of a text.
C. the employment of reading strategies
D. determining the main idea of a text.
75. If we want to develop our reading ability at an advanced level, we should _________.
pay more attention to the content of a text.
make our reading process more conscious
learn to use different ways in reading different texts.
take a critical attitude towards the author’s ideas.

Among countless factors which result in this changing, there is a most significant one, that’s, the globalization. As we know, compared to the past, nowadays, different languages have more chances to influence each other. This means people from different parts of the world need to be able to communicate in the same language. That language happens to be the dominant language.
Many of the minority languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. As a result, a certain kind of language is not passed down from generation to generation. Another reason relates to the lack of protection on the minority language by the government.
In my opinion, the government of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinction.Book 9 Module 2 DNA—the Secret of Life单元检测题

Every parent knows how hard it can be to shop with kids. Unfortunately, we often don’t have a choice since no one will take care of our kids while we’re gone, so we bring them along and pray that they will behave.
It gets really tiring carrying the children around with your groceries (杂货). We are all thankful for the shopping carts. With a shopping cart you can put them in the seat and start shopping.
Most people forget to have the kids put on the seat belt. Sometimes the kids stand up or the cart tips over. The result is an injured kid. Did you know that there were 24,000 shopping cart accidents involving kids last year This is according to a report by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr Joseph Russell has an idea on how to reduce this number. His suggestion was to lower the center of gravity ( 重心) of the carts. Doing so makes it hard for the kids to fall out or for the cart to tip over. It is definitely less dangerous for the kids.
While Dr Russell’s invention isn’t being used in all of the stores yet, he has already provided some stores with kid-friendly carts. The kids will definitely enjoy riding in the small cars attached to the front of the cart. The newest ones even have TVs inside that play the latest videos. You may just find yourself stuck in the store till the show finishes, but at least your kids will be safer than before.

In the United States, the traditional school year is from September to June. Summer school used to be seen mainly as a place for high school students to repeat classes that they failed, but now they have expanded. Students often go to summer school to ease their class load during the school year. It can also give them more freedom to choose the classes they want during the regular term.
Summer school students do the same amount of work as if they took the class during the school year, but they do it in a much shorter time - just one to two months. They generally attend school for three to four hours every morning, five days a week.
Another choice for many students is to take classes online. Students work with a computer at home or wherever they have an Internet connection. They could even be traveling with their families. However, some online classes require students to come to a classroom to take tests. Students may also have to take part in group discussions with the teacher online and there may be a required number of hours to spend logged on each day.
Teachers say that students who have failed a class may find working with a computer easier than taking the class again in school. For example, they may feel more willing to ask the teacher questions through e-mail, but teachers also say that students must be able to work independently to succeed in an online class. A student must also be a good reader if all the material is presented in writing.
More than three hundred schools are members of Virtual High School. Twenty-five schools are outside the United States. The Website for this online school is govhs.org.
59. Which of the following describes summer school
A. Students must work every day in summer school.

An active lifestyle and a healthy, fish-rich diet are not only good for your heart, they may also help to reduce memory loss caused by old age, two leading neuroscientists (神经系统学家) said on Wednesday.
As people live longer, finding ways of slowing the decline of mental agility (敏捷) is becoming increasingly important, said Professor Ian Robertson, director of the Institute of Neuroscience (神经系统学会) at Trinity College Dublin.
“The biggest threat to being able to function well and properly is our brains,” he told reporters.
“There is very strong evidence, particularly in people over 50, that the degree to which you maintain your mental faculties depends on a handful of quite simple environmental factors,” he said.
Those who remained physically fit, avoided high stress levels and had different types of social life are better equipped to stay alert as they age. Mental stimulation, learning new things and simply thinking like a young person also help.
A new survey called Age Concern showed ageism (对老年人的歧视) was common in Britain where people, on average, see youth as ending at 49 and old age beginning at 65.
Robertson said that such attitudes were not helpful given the number of 80-year-olds who remain “sharp as pins”.
“If you start to think of yourself as old when you are 60, which is no longer justified, you will behave like an old person,” he said.
Research made by his Trinity College colleague Professor Marina Lynch, and also found on the Internet, showed that healthy eating was another key requirement for staying on the ball.
Lynch said that new research showed that fish oils may reduce the cell inflammation(炎症) that causes a decline in memory.
62. What does the passage mainly talk about

B. It’s important to find ways of slowing the decline of mental agility.
C. Those who want to live longer must keep their mental agility.
D. People who live longer are mostly directors of the Institute.
64. If a person who wants to live longer, he should ______.
A. give a clear definition of old age
B. keep playing ball
C. not show his ageism apparently
D. eat healthy food and keep fit
65. Where does this passage probably come from
A. A textbook. B. The Internet.
C. A notice. D. A poster.

For all those who thought that computers were expensive items and not in the list of “necessary buys”, think again. A new computer is here, priced at an easily affordable $200! It is cheaper than a colour TV. Are you interested now
It is called Simputer. As the name suggests, it is a simple computer meant for those who think that a MOUSE is a small rodent (啮齿动物) and that a RAM is a male goat. It is in fact a computer.
This low-cost machine being developed by the Indian Institute of Science and Bangalore-based Encore Software will help bring information technology to ordinary people. Statistics show that India has just 4.5 PCs per 1,000 people while countries like the US and Japan have 500 computers per 1,000 people. The Simputer has been designed to help rural and uneducated people get familiar with computers.
The machine is so friendly that it will even enable first-time computer users to browse the web. The computer has a touch-sensitive screen (触摸屏). This means can use the computer just by touching the screen. Voice recognition software will also be part of the package. The Simputer is not as simple as it sounds. Once people know how to operate the machine, they can use software to perform functions like micro-banking and data collection. It can even be used for educational projects.
Nasscom, the software association, has announced a special campaign starting on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, to educate people on information technology (IT). The Simputer is a small step for people to take, but it is a giant leap in getting a machine into every home.
66. The purpose of the passage is ______.

Defective colour vision (视觉缺陷), as it is called by doctors and scientists, is something which is passed on in the genes (基因). That means that a person gets it from his parents, and they got it from their parents.
Most of the people with colour-blindness are male — about 1 boy in 10 will be colour-blind, while only about 1 girl in 200 will be colour-blind. The gene for colour vision is on the X chromosome (染色体). Females (女性) have two X chromosomes and will only be colour-blind if both of those chromosomes are affected. Males have only one X chromosome, so they only need that chromosome to be affected — that’s why ______ in males (男性).
Because they are colour-blind from birth, most people do not know that they are colour-blind. They don’t know that other people see things differently.
They might know that some people say a ball is orange, when it looks to them exactly like the ball that people say is red — this can be very confusing for a colour-blind person.
They might think that they are foolish when they get in trouble for putting green things in the same pile as red things, or they might think that other people are foolish if they can’t see that the things are all the same colour.

Dear Jenny,
In your e-mail you asked me about how to stay healthy, so let me give you some advice.
As you know, we teenagers grow very fast, so we need plenty of nutritious foods, such as fish and beans, especially fresh vegetables and fruits. You’d better not eat too many sweets. Also, you should do physical exercise regularly instead of studying all the time. For example, you should play basketball or go swimming after school. What’s more, getting enough sleep is very important, so I advise you to get at least eight hours of sleep every day and not to stay up too late. Only in this way can you keep fit.
Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Venice, one of the cities in Italy, was founded in A.D.811 by the people of Malamocco, fleeing(逃跑)from the Franks. It was said that they were guided by pigeons carrying little crosses, and settled where now Venice lies.
Venice is built on 117 islands. It has 150 canals and 400 bridges. The narrow streets, with their historic names, are covered with stones, but have no footpaths. They are dotted with flowershop signs and lanterns. Shops and palaces stand by side. The brick bridges are high enough to allow boats to pass freely under them.
The center of public life is St. Mark’s S quare where tourists and citizens sit in the famous Florian and Quadri cafes to listen to music, enjoying themselves. The Quadri is more popular but the Florian, founded in 1720, is the best-known cafe because it has received such great persons as Byron (an English poet) and Goethe (a German poet).
Unfortunately the special position of Venice is threatening(威胁)its own existence. The terrain(地势)on which it is built began to sink while the level of the surrounding waters is constantly rising. However, many measures have already been taken to prevent the city from sinking.
56.In the second paragraph, the author _______.
A.told us who built the city of Venice
B.showed up where Venice is

Books are for reading, but man must bring to their reading a desire to learn and a power of alisorbing. Reading should be active, not passive.
When students first go to a library, they may be at a loss as to what to read of all the different subjects. Well, Bacon tells you to “Look at weak places in your armour(盔甲)”, and shows you how to fill up the blanks in your knowledge. On the other hand, it is no good just trying to fill your mind with knowledge. Knowledge in itself is often useless. A mind filled with too much knowledge is like a room too full of fumiture; a man cannot walk about freely in it, and look out of the windows. It is much better to collect a few subjects which interest you and to deal lightly with the others than to march heavily through the whole range(范围)of learning, like a silly tourist going through a museum and not missing a single object. If you try to master every subject you may become very wise, but you will be very lonely and you will probably lose all your friends. So you must learn to pick and choose, and you must also learn to look here and there in a library like a camel eating grass on the grassland. If you watch it eating, you will see that although he is supposed to be one of the most stupid animals in the world, he has at least one of the qualities(品质)of the cultured(有修养的)man, the power to pick and choose. A student looking for mental food in a library should take the camel as his model.
60.The writer thinks that one must _______.
A.read as many books as he can
B.try to read books on all the different subjects
C.only read books on subjects that interest him
D.read and absorb a lot
61.A cultured man is similar to a camel because ________.
A.neither of them is interested in knowledge
B.the man reads books as much as a camel eats grass
C.neither of them can be considered wise
D.both of them have the ability to select
62.The term “mental food” (last line) refers to _______.
A.books B.grassland C.brain D.subjects
63.In the second paragraph the writer mainly discusses ________.
A.how to compare furniture with books
B.how to select reading materials
C.how to avoid missing anything interesting in the library
D.why books must be absorbed
C
PUBLIC SPIRIT
Each nation has its own peculiar(特有)character which distinguishes if from others. But the peoples of the world have more points in which they are all like each other than points in which they are different. One type of person that is common in every country is the one who always tries to do as little as he can and to get as much in return as he can. His opposite, the man who is in the habit of doing more than what is strictly necessary and who is ready to accept what is offered in return, is rare everywhere.
Both these types are usually unconscious of their character. The man who avoids effort is always talking about his “rights”: he appears to think that society owes him a pleasant, easy life. The man who is always doing more than his share talks of “duties”: he feels that the individual is in debt to society, and not society to the individual. As a result of their views, neither of these men thinks that he behaves at all strangely.
The men who tries to do as little as he can is always full of excuses: if he was neglected to do something, it was because he had a headache, or the weather was too hot or too cold or because he was prevented by bad luck. At first, other people, such as his friends and his employer, generously accept his stories; but soon they realize what kind of person he is. In the long run he deceives only himself. When his friends become cool towards him and he fails to make progress in his job, he is surprised and hurt. He blames everyone and everything except himself. He feels that society is failing in its duties towards him, and that he is being unjustly treated. He soon becomes one of the discontented(另人不满)members of the society he lives in.
His public spirited opposite is never too busy to take on an extra piece of work; that is the strongest thing about the whole business. If you want something done in a hurry, don’t go to the man who has clearly not much to do. He will probably have a dozen excellent excuses for not being able to help you, much as he claims he would like to. Go to the busiest man you know, particularly if you are sure that he has not a spare minute in the week. If your work is really important, he will make time for it.
64.Which of the following characters is common to most people of the world according to the author
A.Thrifty(节俭的). B.Hard-working. C.Selfish. D.Selfless.
65.The man who is always talking about his “rights” seems to think that ________.
A.society is in debt to him B.the individual owes something to society
C.both types of people behave strangely D.everyone should live a happy life
66.The passage suggests that the man who tries to avoid effort ________.
A.often falls ill B.can’t stand bad weather
C.often has bad luck D.always excuses himself
67.As it is used in the third paragraph, “in the long run” means _________.
A.in the end B.for a long time
C.after running a long distance D.step by step

The Atlantic Ocean is one of the oceans that separate the Old World from the New. For centuries it kept the Americans from being discovered by the people of Europe.
Many wrong ideas about the Atlantic made early sailors unwilling to sail far out into it. One idea was that it reached out to “the edge of the world.” Sailors were afraid that they might sail right off the earth. Another idea was that at the equator(赤道)the ocean would be boiling hot.
The Atlantic Ocean is only half as big as the Pacific, but it is still very large. It is more than 4,000 miles (6,000km) wide where Columbus crossed it. Even at its narrowest it is about 2,000 miles (3,200km) wide.
Two things make the Atlantic Ocean rather unusual. For so large an ocean it has very few islands. Also, it is the world’s saltiest ocean.
There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much there is. But suppose no more rain fell into it and no more water was brought to it by rivers. It would take the ocean about 4,000 years to dry up. On the average the water is a little more than two miles (3.2km) deep, but in places it is much deeper. The deepest spot is near Puerto Rico. This “deep” measures 30,246 feet-almost six miles (9.6km).
One of the longest mountain ranges of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This mountain range runs north and south down the middle of the ocean. The tops of a few of the mountains reach up above the sea and make islands.
Several hundred miles eastward from Florida there is a part of the ocean called the Sargasso Sea. Here the water is quiet, for there is little wind. In the days of sailing vessels(船)the crew were afraid they would be becalmed(停滞不前)here. Sometimes they were.
Today the Atlantic is a great highway. It is not, however, always a smooth and safe one. Storms sweep across it and pile up great waves. Icebergs(冰山)float down from the Far North across the paths of ships.
We now have such fast ways of traveling that this big ocean seems to have grown smaller. Columbus sailed for more than two months to cross it. A fast modern steamship can make the trip in less than four days. Airplanes fly from New York to London in only eight hours and from south America to Africa in four!
68.Which world is the Old World
A.Africa. B.Europe. C.Asia. D.All of the three above.
69.What caused people to be unwilling to explore the Atlantic
A.There are no ships big enough to get across the Ocean.
B.Sailors were afraid of being lost in the Ocean.
C.The Atlantic Ocean was very unusual because it has few islands and the saltiest water.
D.Many incorrect ideas such as “the edge of the world.” “the equator with boiling hot water,”, made people think the Ocean was full of danger.
70.What is the topic of the fifth paragraph
A.How deep the water is.
B.How to measure the water in the Atlantic Ocean.
C.How much water the Ocean holds.
D.How rain affects the Ocean water.
71.We can learn from the text that ________.
A.the Atlantic is the largest ocean on earth
B.one of the longest mountain ranges lies in the Atlantic
C.the Atlantic has a lot of islands in it
D.sailing on the Atlantic Ocean is always quiet, smooth and safe

The INFLUENCE OF TELEVISION
Those who doubt TV’s influence on our lives might consider the effect of automobile on American society. When the automobile first appeared on the highways, most Americans saw it as a horseless carriage, not as an important symbol of a new way of life. Similarly, those of us who grew up before television tend to think of it as just another medium in a series of 20th-century mass-communication systems, such as movies and radio. But television is not just another medium.
If you were born before 1950, television came into your life after your formative years. Even if you are now a TV fan, it will be difficult for you to understand the changes it has brought. For example, imagine spending six hours a day at the local cinema when you were 12 years old. No parent would have allowed it. Yet, among the children we asked, nearly half the 12-year-olds watch an average of six or more hours of television per day. For many of them the habit continues into adulthood(成年). From our surveys(调查),we estimate(估计)that about one third of all American adults(成年人)watch an average of four more hours of television per day.
None of us is totally dependent upon television for our view of the world. However, many of us have not had the opportunity to observe the reality of police station, courtrooms(法庭), corporate board rooms(法人会议室); or hospital operating rooms. Critics(评论家)complain about the stercotyped(不变的)characters and plots of TV dreams. But many viewers look on them as representative(代表)of the real world.
If adults can so easily accept the reality of television, imagine: its effect on children. By the time the average American child reaches public school, he has already spent several years in an electronic nursery school. At the age of 10, the average child spend more hours a week in front of the TV screen than in the classroom. Given continuous exposure(暴露)to the world of TV, it’s not surprising that the children we tested seemed to be more strongly influenced by TV than the adults.
At the other end of the life cycle, television becomes the steady and often the only companion of the elderly. As failing eyesight makes reading difficult, and getting around becomes it problem, many old people spend much of the day watching TV. Here the action of fictional drama helps make up for the inaction of their lives.
72.The author suggested television be thought of as _________.
A.a new medium B.a symbol of a new way of life
C.an electronic nursery school D.nothing new just as the automobile
73.Television exerts strong influence upon people’s view of the world because _______.
A.many people spend much time watching TV
B.people usually regard TV dramas as the real world
C.the plots of TV dramas are very complicated
D.many viewers think that TV dramas reflect the real world
74. “An electronic nursery school” in the 4th paragraph refers to ______.
A.a special medical school B.television
C.a place where babies are cared for D.a very modern training center
75.Implied but not stated ________.
A.Many old people don’t like reading
B.The adults are also influenced by TV
C.TV has its advantages and disadvantages
D.TV is a steady companion for the elderly

The greatest recent social changes have been in the lives of women . During the twentieth century there has been a remarkable shortening of the proportion (比率,比例) of a woman’s life spent in caring for children . A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties , and would be likely to have seven or eight children . By the time the youngest was fifteen , the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years , during which custom , opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work . Today woman marry younger and have fewer children . Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty . Even while she has the care of children , her work is lightened by household appliances (家用电器)and convenience foods .
This important change in women’s life-pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position . Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity , and most of them took a full-time job . However , when they married , they usually left work at once and never returned to it . Today the school-leaving age is sixteen , but many girls stay at school after that age , and though women tend to marry younger , more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born . Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work . Such changes have led to new relationship in marriage , with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life , and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money , and running the home , according to their abilities and interests of each of them .
56.For women at the beginning of the twentieth century , the amount of time spent taking care of children .

58.One reason why today’s mother may take a job is that she .
A.is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselves
B.does not like her own children
C.need not worry about her children’s food
D.likes to share more equally in money with husband
59.The new life-pattern reflected in the relationship in marriage is the result of .
A.husbands’ finding greater satisfactions of family life
B.wives’ abilities in running the home
C.women’s improved economic position
D.husband and wife fighting for their own interests

A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading . It is remarkable first for what it contains : the range of news from local crime to international politics , from sport to business to fashion to science , and the range of comment and special features (特写) as well , from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books , art , theatre and music . A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it : never completely , never straight through , but always by jumping from here to there , in and out glancing at one piece , reading another article all the way through , reading just a few paragraphs of the next . A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers , but for more than any one reader is interested in . What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality (时事性), its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now . But immediately can the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient (短暂的)value . For all these reasons , reading newspapers efficiently which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time , demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading .

Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle (航天飞机)Challenger , in June , 1993. The achievement of Sally Ride , America’s first woman astronaut to fly into space , made this flight especially memorable . Students from two high schools in Camden , New Jersey , however , are likely to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight .
Norma didn’t travel alone . She brought about 100 companions along with her . Norma was an ant , a queen ant who , with her subjects , made up the first ant colony (群体) to travel into space . The ants were part of a science experiment designed by the students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects .
The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly throughout the long space trip . The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened . The problem did not occur in space , but on the ground after Challenger had landed . The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was removed . The hot , dry desert air dried out the colony’s container and the ants died from lack of moisture (水分).
The project was termed a success because it did provide useful information . Students will continue their efforts to find out exactly what went wrong . They will try to prevent the same difficulties from recurring (再发生) on future missions . They don’t want to be discouraged either by the death of the ants or by the $10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space .

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one’s mistakes . It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that , and it is even harder to say ,” I was wrong , and you were right about that .”
I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago . He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighbourhood where I grew up , and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (in many countries , eggs are sold by the dozen and are put in cartons .) Then he related an incident and I began to remember unclearly the incident he was describing .
I was about eight years old at that time . I went into the store with my mother to do some shopping . On that particular day , I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place .
There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there were lots of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons . The cartons were put there or four feet high . I must have stopped in front of the poles of egg cartons . Just then a woman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the cartons . For some reason , I decided it was up to me to put the eggs back together , so I went to work .
The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened .When he appeared , I was on my knees looking at some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs broken , but to him it looked as though I was the one who just did it .He severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs . I tried to explain , but it was no good . Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident , it is plain that the manager did not .
69.According to the passage, many people will have a good opinion of those who .

Many students want to learn English well, but they seem not to have proper ways to do this. Here are a few tips we’ve put together to help you learn English well.
Speak , speak speak!
Practice speaking as often as you can --- even speaking to yourself is good practice.
Try recording yourself whenever you can. Compare your pronunciation with the master version, see how you can do better and have another go. If you can do this several times, you will find that each version is better than the last.
Why not learn with someone else
It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade a friend or family members to study with you, it will make you keep working. Agree times to meet and set goals for the week, and test each other regularly.
Don’t get stuck by a word you don’t know.
Practise improvising ways of getting your meaning across when speaking spontaneously(本能的),even if you don’t know the exact words or phrases. Think of things you might want to say whenever you have spare time. A basic example is the use of tenses, If you ______________ but want to talk about yesterday, use the verb in the present tense and use the word for “yesterday” . Use facial expression, hand movements, anything to get your meaning across.
Language learning is also about intuition(直觉)
Guesswork is an important strategy(策略) in learning a new language. When listening to recorded material, you aren’t expected to understand something new each time. Learn to make maximum use of all the clues you can pick up. For example, what do the speakers sound like Happy Angry Calm etc.
Build up your vocabulary .
A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but don’t try to learn too much at once. It’s best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take a maximum of six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, then come back to then later. Much of the vocabulary in the course id presented by topic.
And above all, have fun.
What’s the best title of the passage (please answer within 10 seconds. )
Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one
Whenever it is possible, try making a record of yourself when speaking.
Please fill in the blanks in the fourth paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Please answer within 10 words. )
How to listen to recorded material ( Please answer within 30 words. )
Translate the underlined sentence in the last paragraph into Chinese.

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.
In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people:as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.
Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on,the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude towards them.
Disabled people face many physical barriers.Next time you go shopping or to work or to visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers:prejudice(偏见) can be even harder to break down and ignorance(无知) inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through,so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

Started in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest of many colleges and universities in the United States. Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Dartmouth were all started before the American Revolution made the thirteen colonies(殖民地)into states.
In the early years, these schools were much alike. Only young men attended colleges. All the students studied the same subjects, and everyone learned Latin, Greek and Hebrew. As knowledge increased, Harvard and other colleges began to teach many new subjects. Students were allowed to choose the subjects that interested them.
Special colleges for women were started. New state universities began to teach such subjects as farming, engineering and business. Today, there are many different kinds of colleges and universities. Some years ago industries had more freedom than they have now,and they did not need to be as careful as they must today. They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed. They did not have to pay much attention to the health and safety of the people who worked for them. Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them;often conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.
Of course sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed the need for changes. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries into the causes of the disasters or the problems. New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries;however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who died or who became seriously ill.
Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers. In the U. S., for example, there is a department which new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems. It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow. Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell.A third department looks at the places where people work, and then reports any companies that are breaking the laws which protect the health and safety of workers. Of course, new government departments and new laws cannot prevent every accident or illness, but they are having some good results. Our work places are safer and cleaner than before. The planes and cars which we use for travel are better. Producers are thinking more about the safety and health of the people who buy and use their products.

[1]The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs, but in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions. Some people are compulsive (难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games
[2]Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Many people enjoy going to malls or stores more and more everyday, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked on shopping and usually buy things that they don’t need. Even though they don’t have enough money, they buy everything they want.
[3]The question is: why do they have this addiction There isn’t a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say that they feel more important and better after they buy something. They also tend to have this addiction when they feel guilty.
[4]Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addiction, but it can ___________. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. It can also cause financial problems. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don’t have. 作文
Dear David,
I’m glad that you’ve noticed our efforts directed towards environmental protection. Thank you for your concern.
As too much use of plastic bags has caused serious white pollution, our govenment encourages us to use environment-friendly shopping bags. These bags are made of a variety of material that can be easily treated when they become rubbish. Besides, they can be reused. More and more people in China have realized the advantages of such bags and started using them.
I believe that the wide use of these shopping bags can greatly improve our environment. This is one of the many steps we are to make our country an even cleaner place.

Text 10
Now, here is news:
An early morning fire damaged the Historic Geller House today. It de stroyed the third floor of the building, but fire-fighters saved the first and the second floors. There were a few elderly people living in the building at the time and they were carried to safety. The Geller House was built in 1718, and was used as a hotel for over 150 years. George Washington stayed here in 1782. The Geller’s owned the house until 1930’s. Then they sold it to Mill’s family. Five years ago, it was made into a building for the elderly. Several fire departments were called to the scene. When we asked Fire Chief Andrew Barnes how the fire started, he answered that most likely a burning cigarette caused it. Chief Barnes promised a further investigation into the cause.
