Lesson 27 Jenney’s family
Class Opening and Review
GREETING
Greet the class with phrases the students have learned.
SING “HOW ARE YOU ”
Try to sing the song without the audiotape. Play the audiotape to sing the song if you need it.
PUPPETS
Lead dialogues with new and old vocabulary such as:
Teacher: Is your father a teacher or a businessman
Student 1 (Li Ming): My father is a businessman.
Teacher: Are you okay How do you feel
Student 1 (Li Ming): I feel ____.
Teacher: Is your mother a nurse or a doctor
Student 2 (Li Ming): She is a doctor.
Teacher: Is she tall or short
Student 2 (Li Ming): She is ____.
New Concepts
1. Police officer, bus driver, carpenter.
DISCUSS
Ask the students to recall the members of their family. They should be able to identify mother, father, son and daughter.
Explain that Jenny has a sister and a brother. Translate, if necessary. If the students are not already aware, explain that in Canada and other countries, families are usually bigger than in China. Ask the class to say the words with you a few times.
Introduce police officer, carpenter and bus driver. For example, explain that Jenny’s brother is a police officer and ask if anyone has a police officer in the family (only if this does not offend). Discuss carpenter (Jenny’s father) and bus driver (Jenny’s mother). Ask the students to say the words with you a few times.
STUDENT BOOK: L27 N1
Ask the students to look at the pictures and describe what they know in English. The students should be able to pick out Jenny, family, Canada, son, daughter, father, mother and school.
Read the sentences slowly for the students as you point to the pictures. Then play the audiotape as the students follow in their books. The audiotape plays the story twice: once for the students just to listen and once for the students to repeat the words after the speaker. The speaker pauses after each sentence.
Ask the students to read the sentences aloud with you.
PUPPETS
Pass the Jenny puppet to individual volunteers and lead each through a dialogue about Jenny’s family, using old and new vocabulary. For example:
Teacher: Is your father a police officer or a carpenter
Student 1 (Jenny): My father is a carpenter.
Teacher: What’s your sister’s name What’s her name
Student 1 (Jenny): Her name’s Lynn.
Teacher: Is she old or young
Student 1 (Jenny): She is young.
Teacher: Is your mother a bus driver
Student 2 (Jenny): Yes.
Teacher: What colour is her hair
Student 2 (Jenny): Her hair is blond.
DRILL (OPTIONAL)
Write on the blackboard:
My father is a ___. His name is __.
My mother is a___. Her name is __.
Ask if any of the students have a parent who is a nurse, doctor, teacher, carpenter, police officer or student (only if this does not offend). Ask those students to stand and read the appropriate sentence.
ACTIVITY BOOK: L27 N1
In this exercise, the students complete sentences about Jenny’s and Li Ming’s families by filling in the blanks. Show them the word list.
Teaching TipRemember, the students need to understand the overall meaning of statements and questions, not every word. They will naturally grasp the meaning of new words as they hear and see them again and again.
2. Where is Lynn
STUDENT BOOK: L27 N2
Lead a discussion about the story these pictures tell. For example, where does this scene happen What is going on Ask the students to look at the sentences people say in the scene and to name words and phrases they recognize. Use as much English as possible in questions such as:
Where is Lynn
Is Lynn okay
Play the audiotape as the students read along. Then explain unfamiliar words, such as relax.
ACTIVITY BOOK: L27 N2
In this exercise, the students review vocabulary by following the directions to underline, colour and circle pictures correctly.
