Chinese people call the Spring Festival“Nian”. But do you know that Nian was once the name of a monster(妖怪)
A long time ago, the monster Nian lived in the mountains. It ate animals. But in winter, it could not find food. So it came to villages and ate a lot of people. People were so afraid of Nian that they locked their doors before evening came during the winter. One day, an old man came to a village. He told people there that Nian was afraid of three things——the color red, fire and noise. He told people to play drums and gongs, make big fires and set off fireworks(放鞭炮)to make Nian go away.
On a moonless, cold night, Nian went to the village again. As soon as it opened its big mouth, people made loud noises and made fires. Nian was really afraid and ran away. Wherever it went, there was noise and fire. When Nian was tired and could not run anymore, people killed the monster.
After that, on the coldest day of winter, people beat drums and gongs, and set off fireworks to celebrate the death of the monster of Nian. They put up red lanterns and have a big dinner without sleeping during the night.

The ancient Chinese also flew kites to bring good luck and to make their crops grow rich and tall. Sometimes they tied long strings(细绳)and hooks(钩子)to their kites. Then they would fly the kites over water, letting the hooks hang down to catch fish.

There are a lot of kinds of folk music in China, because China has 56 nationalities and every group has its own style of music. There is a lot of poetry(诗意) in Chinese folk songs, including
ideas, feelings, images. But in pop songs, there is no poetry. Each Chinese folk song has its own personality, for example, “Jasmine(茉莉花)” or “Dancing of Youth(青春舞曲)”, “My youth has gone away like a bird and never come back.”
Folk songs are from the people. Folk songs are like a way of serving the people, although folk songs express the feelings of the people. Chinese folk songs expressed the feelings, the emotions(情绪) and the hopes of people about being in love or how hard life is.
“The more national, the more international.” In order to spread Chinese folk music, a forum(论坛) of folk songs called “Nanning International Festival of Folk Songs Art” is held every year. Chinese and overseas art groups and artists often perform at the opening ceremony, such as Chinese minority singers—Han Hong, Teng Ge’er and A’Lilangs.
