Lesson 7 I’m lost
Class Opening and Review
GREETING
SING "THE WHEELS ON THE BUS"
Sing it without the audiotape.
PLAY "NUMBER"
Review the directions for the game, which the students played in the first semester, in "Games" at the back of this guide. Play the game to review numbers from one to one hundred.
DRILL
Use a map of China to review near and far. You can point to cities near and far from your location and ask:
Is _____ near _____or far from______
You can also ask for individual volunteers and say:
Point to a city near/far from __.
MORE DRILL
Review bicycle, bus, car, truck and cab. Hold up vocabulary cards, or point to pictures on your poster of means of transportation.
New Concepts
1. I'm lost.
ROLE-PLAY
Ask for individual volunteers to model the following situation with you. You are a foreign visitor to China, lost on the street. You are studying a map. A volunteer walks by.
Teacher: Excuse me. I'm lost. Where is____ (Name a local street the students all know.)
See if the volunteers can answer your question by pointing, by giving directions or by saying I can show you.
DEMONSTRATE
Write I'm lost on the blackboard. Point to the words as you and the students say them a few times.
STUDENT BOOK: L7 N1
Play the audiotape as the students follow in their books.
Discuss the dialogue. Use as much English as possible. For example, use questions such as:
Where is Danny.'
What is Danny looking for
What is a map
What does the man say
2. I don't understand. Please speak slowly.
ROLE-PLAY
Ask for a volunteer to model another situation with you. You pretend to be a foreign visitor to China. The volunteer walks over to you, introduces himself or herself in Chinese and begins a conversation.
Demonstrate, using hand and facial gestures, that you are confused. Say I don't understand. I don't understand. Then say, while you use gestures to indicate your meaning, please speak slowly. Please speak slowly. Use gestures until the volunteer understands your meaning. The volunteer should repeat what he or she said, but more slowly.
Say I don't understand. Please speak slowly a few times with the class.
Repeat the role-play with another student. This time have the student pretend to be the foreign visitor who must say I don't understand. Please speak slowly. Prompt the student.
DEMONSTRATE
Write I don't understand. Please speak slowly, on the blackboard. Point to the words as you and the students say them a few times.
STUDENT BOOK: L7 N2
Play the audiotape as the students follow in their books.
Say I don't understand. Please speak slowly a few more times with the students.
MAKE UP A DIALOGUE
Divide the class into groups of four. Tell the students to pretend that two of them are foreign visitors to China who are lost. Each group must make up a dialogue where these people ask for help and receive help from the other students in English.
The students can use any words and phrases they have learned. Ask the students to call out possible' words and phrases as you write them on the blackboard. For example:
hotel, park, office building, gym, library
bus, cab, car
Excuse me. Where's the____
Is it near or far
Let's go to the __
Let's take a _____.
turn right, turn left, go straight, go up the stairs
