The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in a place, men moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad to all living things in the world, but it is not only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop the people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from blowing dirty smoke into the air.
The pollution of SO2 is now the most dangerous problem of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is certain that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must be careful of the rise in population at the same time.
36.Our world is becoming much smaller _____.
A. because the earth is being polluted day and night
B. because science is developing
C. because of the rise in population
D. because the earth is blown away by the wind every year
37.Thousands of years ago, life was _____ it is today.
A. much easier than B. as easy as
C. as hard as D. much harder than
38.Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here “it” means ____.
A. water pollution B. air pollution
C. noise pollution D. rubbish
39.Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution because _____.
A. it’s bad to all living things in the world
B. it makes much noise
C. it has made our rivers and lakes dirty
D. it makes us become angry more easily
40. Which of the following is not true?
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B. The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world’s population does.
C. From now on, maybe people will try to go to work by bus or by bike instead of by car or by motorbike. It is helpful to fight against the problem of SO2 .
D. The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people.

How old is “old”? The answer has changed over the years. Two hundred years ago, you were old at 35. That was the average life then. At the turn of this century, as medical knowledge advanced, the average life span(长度) increased to 45. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking forward to many more active years.
So, how old is old? The answer is one you’ve heard many times, from all sorts of people. “You are as old (or young) as you feel!” The calendar(日历) simply tells you how many years you have lived. Your body tells you how well you’ve lived.
“Youth,” wrote an anonymous author, “is not a time of life --- it is a state of mind. Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by deserting their ideals.”
Old is a point of view. Alice Brophy, when she was with the New York City commission for the Aging, said, “It annoys me when people say, Gee, you look young for your age!” What does that mean? Is there some model that you’re supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80.
There are neither biological nor physiological reasons to connect poor health with growing older. Older people are more likely to be affected with illness and physical disabilities than you are, but old age itself is not a disease. It is possible to remain physically fit throughout your life.
Older minds can be as bright as young minds. Senility (衰老) is part of the normal aging process, but it is not a sign of disease. In a 1985 study of men aged 20, 40, 60 and 80 years, no evidence was found to indicate that aging was associated with an inevitable (不可避免的) fall in intellectual performance, in generally healthy people. Older people give up smoking and break other bad habits just as successfully as younger people.
41. This article is mainly about ____.
A. the average life span B. aging C. sanity D. youth
42. According to the article, which statement is true?
Aging does not mean you become unhealthy.
Older people are not as smart as young people.
Most older people are physically fit.
D. Most older people are in poor health
43. Which question is not mentioned in the article?
A. The average life span today.
B. Senility is a normal part of aging.
C. Older people don’t have more trouble breaking bad habits.
D. You’re old only when you feel old.
44. The writer thinks that if a person is senile(衰老的), ____.
A. he is more than 70 years old B. he has a disease
C. he has physical disabilities D. he feels he is old
45. In the writer’s opinion, today a healthy 70-year-old man is most probably considered to be ____.
A. really old B. in poor health C. a sign of senility D. more active

“If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives — the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do — as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read — sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体). They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

A. Sports and international news. B. A menu of important news.

49. From the passage, we can infer _______.
A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media
B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media
C. television will take the place of newspaper
D. the writer believe some media will die out
50. The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means _______.
A. depend on B. compete with C. fight with D. kill off

书面表达:
A recent survey shows what the students of our school like to do in their spare time. From the pie chart, we can see 53% of the students like sports, so doing sports is the most popular activity in our school. The second popular activity for students is surfing the Internet and 36 % of the students have interest in it. Only a few students, about 8 percent of them, take reading as a hobby. And even fewer are fond of playing musical instruments.
In my point of view, our school should have more sports facilities built to satisfy the need of the students. Guidance should be given to students on surfing the Internet and ways must be found to arouse students’ interests in reading and music.
