REPORTED SPEECH
Direct Speech: “It is time to study,” our teacher said
Reported Speech: Our teacher said that it was time to study.
Let’s take a look:
This paragraph is in Direct Speech. The spoken verbs are underlined.
“Can I go to the park, please ” Li Jun asked.
“Is your homework finished ” his mother inquired.
“No it isn’t,” Li Jun replied.
“Well, you can’t go until your homework is finished,” she said.
“But I want to go now,” cried Li Jun.
“You have to finish your homework!” shouted his mom.
Let’s change it into reported speech. Notice the verbs all change to the past tense: Li Jun asked if he could go to the park. His mother inquired if his homework was finished. He replied that it wasn’t. His mother said that he couldn’t go until his homework was finished. He cried that he wanted to go then, but his mom shouted that he had to finish his homework.

Change these sentences from direct speech to reported speech.

Little Timmy cried but he didn’t want to go to the dentist.
2. “Do you have a headache ” the doctor asked.
The doctor asked if he had a headache.
