一.Learning goal:
1. 强调句用法 what is it about the world today that makes it necessary to continue learning
强调句:it be + 被强调部分+ that/who +剩余部分
e.g.It is the desk that I put my books on Where is that you put your books on
It is only when I came back home 2 hours later that I realized that I lost my book in the store.
2. Frankly speaking : to be frank Honestly speaking: to be honest
Generally speaking Exactly speaking Strictly speaking
worthy用法 be worth + n. = be worthy of + n.
be worth doing = be worthy to be done/ of being done
eg: The matter is worth consideration.= The matter is worthy of consideration.
The book is well worth reading, but it is not worthy of being translated/ to be translated.
4. As if用法 I felt as if I had done something wrong.
e.g It looks as if it is going to rain.
It seems as if the boy has lost his way.
以上两个例子所表示的是事实或者具有很大的可能性
The young man with long hair looks as if he were a girl.
He walks as if he were drunk.
以上例子所表示的不是事实,常用虚拟语气
5. in person = personally 亲自
e.g. I can’t attend the meeting personally; I’m sending someone to speak for me. 我不能接受亲自出席会议,但我将派人代我发言。

1. lack v. without; have less than enough of 没有;缺乏;缺少
be lacking in 不足;不够
lack creativity, self-discipline, courage 缺乏创造性、自制力、勇气

n. absence or shortage (所需事物的)缺乏,短缺
for lack of 因缺乏…,而没有… have no lack of 不缺乏…
a lack of care, money, water 缺乏关心、金钱、水

2. willing adj. ready or eager to help 愿意;乐于相助的
be willing to do sth. 愿意做某事

语法
1. wish的虚拟用法
在动词wish后的宾语从句中的虚拟语气,常省去宾语从句的引导词that。
1)对现在情况的虚拟(与现在的事实相反):
从句用过去式或过去进行式,其句子结构为:宾语从句的谓语动词be变为were,实义动词用一般过去式。例:
I wish it were spring in my hometown all the year around.
但愿我的家乡四季如春。(事实上不可能)
I wish I were a bird. (事实上不可能)
2)对过去情况的虚拟(和过去的事实相反):
其句子结构为:宾语从句的谓语用过去完成时,或would, could, might+现在完成时。例:
I wish (that) I hadn't wasted so much time. 我后悔不该浪费这么多时间。(事实上已浪费了)
He wishes he hadn't lost the chance. 他真希望没有失去机会。(其实已失去)
3)对将来情况的虚拟(表示将来的主观愿望):
用wish表示对将来事情的愿望。
从句动词"would/should/could/might +动词原形"(注意:主句和从句的主语不相同)。例:
1. I wish it would stop raining. 我希望雨能停止。(事实上雨还在下着呢)
2. I wish you would be quiet. 我希望你安静一些。(事实上那家伙还在吵着呢)注意:如果将wish改为过去式wished, 其后that 从句中的动词形式不变。例如:
I wished I hadn't spent so much money. 我要是那时没有花掉那么多钱就好了。
2. should have +过去分词
should have done 表示“(过去)本来应该…,而实际却没有…”是对已发生的情况的“责备”、“惊奇”或“推测”。
如:1. Tom, you are too lazy. The work should have been finished yesterday.
汤姆,你太懒惰了,这项工作本来应该昨天就做完的。
2. You are late again. You should have got up earlier this morning.
你又迟到了,你今天早晨本应当早点起床。
shouldn't have done 表示(过去)本来不应该做某事,而实际做了。(含有指责对方或自责的含意。)
1. Look, Tom is crying. I shouldn't have been so angry at him.
看,汤姆哭了,我本来不应该对他生气。
2. He is unreliable. You shouldn’t have told him the truth.
他不可靠,你不应该告诉他真相。
注意:也可以用ought to have done 表示过去应该做而实际并没有做,与“should+have+done”用法基本一样。否定式为ought not to have done。
  I ought to have gone home last Sunday. 我理应上星期日回家。
You ought not to have given him more help. 你不应该帮助他那么多。

laid-off 可以用作形容词 He is a laid-off worker.
prove 可以用作及物动词也可以用作不及物动词。
It proves to be right to help those who is in need of help.
It proved to be the best way to solve the problem.
The theory has been proved to be perfect by many scientists.

I happened to meet an old friend when I was doing shopping.
7. It’s never too late to learn.
too…to 太……以致于不能 She is too careless to notice it.
He was too young to look after himself.
在too 的前面有not, never, only, but, just 等词修饰时,这个句型表示肯定意义。
He knows but too well to hold his tongue.
Don’t be too ready to promise.
8. Now I am about to graduate from the School of Continuing Education at Qinghua University.
be about to do 准备做某事,将要做某事
I am about to go out to the supermarket to buy some fruit.
在使用这个词组时应当记住它是不能与具体的时间状语连用的。我们一般不说:
I am about to go back in a week.
表示将要做某事或准备做某事时,我们还可以使用will, be going to do, be to do , on the point of doing .我们常常会遇到这些用法与when连用。如:
I was about to go out when the telephone rang.
I am to give up when my dear teacher cheers me up.
He was on the point of telling the secret out when she broke into in time.
9. I decided that it was time I became an Internet user.
这又是虚拟语气的用法。
It is/ was time (that) sb. should do sth.
It is / was time (that) sb. did sth.
It’s high time I made my own decision/ I should make my own decision.
根据课文内学习的虚拟语气的用法翻译下面的句子。
