Yeah, we can do lots of things on the Internet without going out. The computer has made our life change greatly. The computer is a great invention in science.
Science affects us all. Our material comfort and lifestyle depend on advances in science. Then, do you know the names of some famous scientists What are they famous for
1. Darwin: biology: He discovered that the ancestors of people were monkeys.
2. Newton: physics: He discovered why all things fall down to earth.
3. Curie: physics: She discovered radium.
4. Zhang Heng: Physics: He invented Didongyi.
5. Stephen Hawing: physics: He raised (put forward) a theory about black holes. ect.
Part1.Warming up
Well, next let’s try a quiz about some great scientists and find out who knows the most. Please turn to P1 . (Warming up)
Notes:
1. Q1: 第一个that引导的是一个宾从,第二个 that 引导的是一个定从,先行词为force。
2. Q2:explaining how…是分词短语作定语,修饰先行词book,相当于一个定从:which explained how…
3. Q8: 句中的to keep miners safe underground 作 a lamp 的定语,说明它的用途,也可看成是不定式作目的状语。
( keep + n. + adj./adv./n./to do/pp./现分/介宾短语这一结构中adj./adv./n./ to do/pp./现分/介宾短语是作动词keep后宾语的补足语。
Eg: This helps to keep the cold out.

Well, we have heard of most of the scientists in the form. But have you heard of John Snow
He was a well-known doctor. Of his day, an infectious disease “cholera” caused many people to die. It was he who found the cause of the disease. He found the cause in scientific research. Then, if you were John Snow, how would you do to prove a new idea in scientific research. Discuss in small groups the stages in examining a new scientific idea. There are 7 stages on page 1.What order would you put them in

Explaining
1. John Snow defeats “King Cholera”.
defeat : vt./n. 战胜、击败
eg: They were defeated in the war.
The war ended in the defeat of the enemy.
Defeat beat与 win
defeat 、beat的宾语是人或一个集体,defeat的宾语常指敌人,在游戏或比赛中则用beat. win的宾语是比赛、战斗、奖品等,如:game, war, battle, prize.
eg: We beat their team by 10 points.
They won the football match at last.
2. …to ease the birth of her babies.
ease : vt.减轻(负担、痛苦),放松
eg:The doctor gave him some pills to ease the pain.
vi.(与off,up连用)缓和,放松
eg:The headache has eased.
n.安逸,舒适
eg:I feel at ease in his company.
3. …exposed to cholera.
exposed to cholera在句中是过去分词作后定,表被动。意为“患霍乱的”。
expose(常与 to 连用)暴露;受到风险;揭露
eg:Don’t expose your skin to the sun for too long. You’ll get burned.
I exposed their lie to the light of day.
expose sth to the light of day (把某事暴露于光天化日之下)
4. …every time there was an outbreak.
every time 此处相当于 whenever,作连词用,引导时间状从,(类似的表达有: each time, the moment, the minute, the day, immediately等。
eg: I will give the letter to him the moment I see him.
He came here immediately he got the letter.)
5. The first suggested that …
suggest经常有“建议”的意思,但在这个句子里的意思是“暗示;间接表明”。
eg: Her smile suggested her satisfaction.
Suggest作“建议”的意思时,常用的结构有:
Suggest +(doing) sth /+从句(从句谓语动词常用虚拟语气,即(should+do).
另suggest作“暗示;间接表明”的意思,后跟从句时,从句不用虚拟语气。

absorb: vt.(1)吸收 ,常用:absorb …into… 吸收
eg: Black cloth absorbs light.
The big company has gradually absorbed these small companies into its own organization.
(2)使专心,使全神贯注,常用be absorbed in 全神贯注于(常用被动)
eg: I was absorbed in the book and didn’t hear your call.
7.It seemed the water was to blame.
blame (1)vt. 责备,谴责,将…归咎于
<1>be to blame 是固定短语, “…应受谴责, 该怨…”此时blame不用于被动.
eg:The driver was not to blame for the traffic accident.
<2>常用搭配有blame sb. for sth/doing sth. blame sth. on sb.
eg: She was blamed for (making) the mistake.
He have blamed the failure on me.
(2)n.put/lay the blame on take the blame
eg: Everyone put the blame for the mistake on me.
The driver took the blame for the accident.
8. In addition, he found two ….
in addition 副词短语“加之,又,另外”(包括除去内容在内)=besides
eg: There was an earthquake and, in addition, there was a flood.
in addition to 介词短语“加之,除了…之外”(包括除去内容在内)=besides
eg: He speaks French in addition to English.
9. …link…to…将…和…连接或联系起来
eg: The city is linked to that town by a railway.
10. …instruct not to expose…
instruct vt.(+sb/sb sth/sb wh-+to do/sb to do)教导,命令,通知
eg: I instruct you in English.
He instructed me the best way of doing that thing.
He instructed me how to do it.
He instructed me to wait.

Learning about language
Language points:
1. come to an end 结束, 终结
eg, The battle came to an end two hours later. 战斗两个小时后结束了。
2. take up 开始从事(某职业或行当)
eg, She has taken up a job as teacher . 她当上了教师。
3. instruct sb in sth 传授某人某技巧
eg, Professor Li instructed them in history. 李教授教他们历史。
4. construction n. 建设;结构;建筑物
eg, under construction 在兴建中
I work in a construction company. 我在一家建筑公司工作。
5. contribute sth to sth 把……捐献/贡献/捐献给……
eg, This teacher has contributed a lot to education. 这位老师对教育作出了很大的贡献。
6. apart from 除……之外;此外
Apart from some spelling mistakes, the composition is quite good.
Apart from a few words, I don’t know English. 我只懂几句英语。
区别:besides 除…之外还有…(包括在内)
except 除了…之外…(不包括在内)
except for 除…之外…只是
in addition to 除了…之外还有…(包括在内)
Reading and writing
Copernicus’ Revolutionary Theory
一、Language points
1. lead to 导致;通向 (to 介词)
eg. His carelessness led to the accident. 他的粗心导致了这起交通事故。
All roads lead to Rome. 条条道路通罗马。
2. only + 状语(介词、副词、从句)位于句首时,其后的主句应使用部分倒装语序。
eg. Only by working hard can we succeed.
Only when the war came to an end was he able to return to his homeland.
但如果only修饰句子其他成分时,及时位于句首,主句也不使用倒装语序。
Only the boy worked out the difficult maths problem. 只有这个男孩做出了这道数学难题。
make sense 讲得通;有道理
3. Yet he could not tell anyone about his theory as the powerful Christian ……
as 引导原因状语从句
4. make sense 有意义; 讲得通
eg. Your story doesn’t make sense to me. 你编的故事我听不明白。
5. at times: sometimes 有时
6. He had collected observations of the stars and used all his mathematical knowledge to explain them. to explain them为不定式在句中作目的状语。
7. So between 1510 and 1514 he worked on it , gradually improving his theory until he felt it was complete. improving his theory 为现在分词在句中作伴随状语。
complete adj. 完整的;全部的 v. 完成
eg. This is a complete story. 这是一个完整的故事。
When will the railway be completed 铁路什么时候竣工?
8. with + 宾语 + 宾语补足语
eg. She sleeps with light on.
The murderer was brought in, with his hands tied behind his back.
With the exams coming next week ,I have no time to play football.
With nothing to do, we went to the cinema.
9. He also suggested that the earth was spinning as it went …….
suggest 暗示;as 引导时间状语从句
10. The Christian rejected his theory, saying it was against God’s idea and people who supported it would be attacked.
saying it was …… 现在分词作伴随状语。
who supported it would be attacked 在句中作定语修饰people
reject 拒绝;不接受;
eg. He rejected our advice.
11. enthusiastic adj. 热心的;满腔热情的 enthusiasm n.
be enthusiastic about sth 对某事热心, 热情
She is enthusiastic about singing.
12. cautious adj. cautiously adv.
He was cautious when he was riding the bicycle. 当他骑自行车的时候;他很小心。
13. Yet Copernicus’ theory is now the base on which all our ideas of the universe are built.
on which all our ideas of the universe are built 在句中作定语修饰base
14. His theory also attacked the Christian idea of gravity, which said things fell to earth because God created the earth as the centre of the universe.
which said thing …… 为非限定性定语从句修饰idea。

T: Good. Today we are going to share the story of Nicolaus Copernicus. Now open your book and turn to Page 6.

1. Fast reading
Get the students read the passage quickly and find out two kinds of theories about the centre of the solar system
Answers:
a. Copernicus believed that the sun is the centre of the solar system
b. The Christian church believed that the earth is special and must be the centre of the solar system.
2. Careful reading
Let the students read the passage again and tell whether the following statements are true or false and correct them.
(1) Copernicus could not tell anyone about his theory because the Christian church would punish him. (T)
(2) Copernicus was so cautious that he dared not publish his theory. (T)
(3) Copernicus’ friends inspired him not to punish his ideas because of his safety. (F)
(4) The Christian church believed that things fell to earth because of the gravity. (F)
(5) Nobody supported Copernicus besides his friends. (F)
