To improve student learning, some American schools have extended the school year, or reorganized it to avoid a long summer break. Another choice is to extend the school day. Some experts are doing some research into how effective this is.
The traditional school day has not changed much in more than a century. Activities or special programs might mean a longer day. But younger children usually go to school from about nine a.m. until about 3 p.m., and older ones are even longer.
Some high schools have changed to later start times because of findings that teenagers learn better that way. Teachers say students are more awake while students say the changes disturb with after-school activities or jobs. By 2007, almost one-third of all secondary schools had some form of special scheduling. The idea is to provide longer periods in the school day to teach basic subjects.
More class time should mean better results. This is the thinking, at least. Yet a 2007 study found that secondary schools with traditional schedules had higher test scores by comparison. Schools with special scheduling did have higher scores in science, though. In any case, the study agreed with earlier findings that students feel better about their schools in systems with nontraditional scheduling.
So how useful is a longer school day? Not surprisingly, experts say it is what educators do with the extra time that has the largest effect on student learning. They note a criticism that education leaders often make scheduling changes without changing the learning environment of a school. They also say that teachers must be trained to use the added time effectively. Professional development is needed. The report notes that simply adding time to a program that is not very good or very interesting will not increase student learning.

Question
I have recently returned to college to complete my Bachelor’s degree. I am in an accelerated course. In this course there are no tests or exams, only class presentations(陈述). I have recently prepared my PowerPoint and will study the material. I am not very knowledgeable in the material. I have not had to speak in public since high school which was many years ago. I am somewhat of a shy person; I am losing sleep because of the anxiety and fear of doing this class for the next year; I have considered giving up, but want so badly to complete this. I am, for lack of a better word, terrified.
Answer
Being a shy person is not really a factor in giving a presentation. Your focus should be on providing information to the other students Think of yourself as a teacher or instructor and not as someone who is trying to show how good he is.
The fact that you are using a PowerPoint presentation takes an enormous amount of pressure off you. With a speech, there is the fear of forgetting what you were going to say. But with a PowerPoint presentation you have a guide.
Some people use only a few words in their bullet-points, while others include full sentences. But for each bullet-point, you need to have some extra material. If you do happen to forget something, no one will know the difference.
The big thing is to give your presentation several times before you give it in class. You can record your practice. This will force you to go through it completely. If you can, give your presentation to a friend.
This practice should give you the confidence in being able to do the task effectively. Although you may be somewhat nervous when you start, once you get going things should be a lot smoother. Best wishes on getting some great presentation.

The United States is the world’s largest consumer of energy. We use electricity, gas and oil to light and heat our buildings and run our cars. The demand for power is growing. But we may not need to build new power plants or find more oil. The best way to increase our supply of energy is to be more efficient.
Did you know that when you leave your video-game console on, it consumes more electricity than two refrigerators? Or that those funny-looking, twisty bulbs use 75% less power than traditional light bulbs? We have the tools to save money, reduce pollution and even help our planet, simply by wasting less energy.
As President, Barack Obama plans to make energy efficiency in America a major goal. He has pledged to cut 15% of all energy use by the Federal Government. In a speech, he called for 75% of government office buildings to be updated for better efficiency. He pointed out that energy-efficient buildings and homes will save consumers billions of dollars on energy bills. An “extra benefit”, he added, will be “a cleaner, safer planet”.
Gas, coal and oil are called fossil (化石的) fuels. They are formed deep in the Earth, by the breakdown of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago. Fossil fuels have been the world’s main source of energy for hundreds of years. But burning them releases dirty gases, which cause pollution.
There are two main ways to save energy. The first is to use more efficient machines. Hybrid (混合动力) cars use less gas. Newer appliances are designed to use less electricity. Today’s refrigerators are three times more efficient than those built before 1973. Laptop computers consume much less energy than desktop computers.
The second way to save is to use machines more productively. According to the US Department of Energy, in the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power electronic equipment is standby power (备用电源). That means power flowing to plugged-in appliances whether or not they are being used. Homeowners can avoid wasting power by pulling the plug on appliances when they are not in use. Efficiency experts argue that today’s best techniques could cut US oil and gas use in half, and reduce our electricity use by three-fourths.
66. Which of the following can take the place of the underlined word “pledged” in Paragraph 3?
A. promised. B. wondered. C. reminded. D. attempted.
67. By referring to Obama’s plan, the author mainly intends to say that ______.
A. the US government office buildings have wasted the most energy
B. Obama has decided to take the lead to cut down the use of electricity
C. it is time for the US to shoulder the responsibility for a cleaner planet
D. the US is determined to improve energy efficiency in the whole America
68. All the following are more efficient EXCEPT ______.
A. A twisty bulb B. A hybrid car
C. A fridge made last year D. A desktop computer
69. It can be inferred from the text that ______.
A. to build new power plants or find more oil is no longer useful
B. burning fossil fuels can lead to a growing demand for power
C. everyone can make a difference by wasting less energy
D. most of the electricity is wasted with appliances plugged-in
70. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The world’s Largest Consumer of Energy
B. The World’s Energy Efficiency Movement
C. We Need to Find New Energy
D. We Have to be More Energy Efficient
D
When reading about another cruel murder I was just so disgusted I could not make it all the way through, because horrible things just seem to happen all too often. How sad and pessimistic it may sound, the world might head for an even more violent future if we do not act soon.
? In no other time in history information, good and bad, has been spread as fast as today.?Media just pushes out violence and cruelty and of course it will affect the minds of people watching. Internet has wrecked the idea that love is something special and school social workers are busy teaching teenage boys how to behave in a relationship and girls to say no to things they do not want to do. Young children got to bed with nightmares because they have seen films they were too young to understand. We are all influenced by the things we experience, whether they are chosen by free will or enforced upon us.
Quite a lot of studies have been made into the way children are affected by watching TV and other media such games with a high content of violence. In a young age children cannot differentiate themselves and their fantasies from the real world. By playing games that mixes reality with fantasy children learn about themselves and the world. In their games they also act out things they might be pondering on, their wishes and things they have been through. If a child is let to watch a lot of violence, not surprisingly, the child is very likely to play violent games. Acting out what they have been through is a normal way of trying out new concepts and form ideas about how to interact with other people. Also, up to certain age most children adore adults how ever good or bad they are. Children look upon these adults as role models and copy their behavior.
So what happens then if a child watches adults harm and kill each other in a movie or in a game? What adults do is usually ok to do, so what happens on the screen must be ok even if it looks strange and makes the child feel uneasy.?Children become insecure and anxious.
71. What would be the best title of the text?
A. The Impact of Media B. Violence and Cruelty in Games.
C. Our Worrying Future D. Take Control of Children
72. Why are children easily affected by TV programs and games?
A. Because they easily ignore the directions from their teachers and parents.
B. Because they can’t tell reality from fantasy and like to act things out.
C. Because TV programs and games are more attractive than their lessons.
D. Because they cannot find their role models from the real world.
73. From the text we can learn that ______.
A. most people are deeply pessimistic about their future
B. young children get in touch with much content of violence
C. educators fail to teach what is right and what is wrong
D. films on TV are too difficult for children to understand
74. What doest the last paragraph of the text imply?
A. Children tend to copy adults’ behavior.
B. Adults always do the right thing.
C. Strange things often appear on the screen.
D. Movies and games worry children much.
75. What’s the author’s attitude towards the influence of media?
A. Pessimistic. B. Suspicious. C. Tolerant. D. Concerned.

Although Chinese government has taken measures to regulate property market, the housing prices still keep on rising. On Tuesday, the State Development and Reform Commission and the National Bureau of Statistics jointly issued a set of data, which shows that in last March, the housing sales price in 70 big and medium-sized cities across China rose by 5.9% compared with the same period of the year before. The growth rate was a little bit higher than that of last month in the following days of that year.
? In last February, prices of newly built commercial houses sold in 70 cities across China rose by 6%. Housing prices in Shenzhen, Beijing and Guangzhou grew by 10.7%, 9.9% and 8.6%, respectively, the fastest among all.
? Price of used houses continued to grow in Shenzhen, Beijing and Dalian, with such price growing the largest in Shenzhen among all cities. In last May, price of used houses in those seventy surveyed cities increased at an average rate of 12.7%.
?In recent years, Chinese government has taken a series of measures trying to drag down the housing price and some of the measures are really tough. Despite this, ____________________.
? Days ago, Chinese officials admitted that housing prices remained high in some large cities despite government efforts. At present, housing supply structure is still inappropriate, since only 16.1% of the new commercial houses are built with a floor space of less than 90 square meters each, while Chinese government has hoped that the proportion(比率)of such houses should account for 70% of the total houses sold. In addition, the low-rent housing system launched by the government only covers a limited number of people and is therefore unable to drag down the housing price as government expects.

With the popularity of the private cars in our city, the traffic problem is becoming more and more serious, bringing great inconvenience to our citizens’ traveling. What’s worse, some drivers didn’t obey the transportation rules. They drove through the crossing even the traffic lights turned red, which caused frequent terrible traffic jams.
Fortunately, great changes have taken place since our city government took some effective measures to deal with the problems. Some cameras were equipped over the crossings, which are used not only to punish those who break the traffic rules, but also to help the police watch over and deal with the traffic all over the city. The whole transportation is in good order now.
In my opinion, it is a good way to solve the traffic problems in big cities. Besides, we should try to make people aware that the traffic rules are important for the safety and convenience while traveling.

M: Hello, May I speak to Clark Carlson?
W: I’m sorry, he’s not in at the moment.
M: This is John Lee. Is that Mrs. Carlson?

M: Thank you. I’ll do that. Will Clark be back soon?
W: He should be back in hour or so. Is it urgent?
M: Not really. I just want to tell him that I’ve found a couple of articles on how to control noise pollution. I think he might be interested.

Text 10
W: If you invite someone to join you for dinner in a restaurant, phone the restaurant first to find out if you need a reservation in order to avoid a long wait for a table. To make a reservation, just give your name, the number of people in your group, and the time you plan to arrive. When you invite someone to dinner, you should be prepared to pay the bill and reach for it when it arrives. However, if your companion insists on paying his or her share, don’t get into an argument about it. Some people prefer to pay their own way so that they don’t feel indebted, and those feelings should be respected. In most American restaurants, the waiter or waitress’s tip is not added to the bill. If the service is fine, the guest usually leaves a tip equal to about 15% of the bill. In expensive restaurants, leave a bit more.
备选试题
备用试题:
It’s natural to greet friends with a smile and a wave. When you do this, your face and body work together to show your friends that you’re happy to see them. But what happens if your face and body send mixed message? Would someone be more likely to believe the look on your face or the way you hold your body?
Scientists have recently tackled(解决)these questions. They found that when a person is looking at your face, he might not believe what he sees if your body language doesn’t match the feeling that your face shows.
Studying such mixed message is nothing new for scientists. Previously, they had found that the tone of a person’s voice can be more important than the words that are spoken. For example, most people tend not to believe a person who says in a flat voice, “I’m so excited.”
When it came to emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language, most scientists suspected that face was more important. To test if this was true, psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston showed people a number of pictures of isolated (单独的) faces and isolated bodies(with faces blurred out)that showed anger or fear. They also showed pictures in which angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared bodies.
Using the pictures, the researches asked people to quickly press a button that matched the correct facial emotion: anger or fear. When people looked only at faces, they choose the right emotion about 81 percent of the time. But when people looked at a mismatched picture- a scared face with an angry body, for example-they correctly guessed the emotion on the face only 64 percent of the time.
These result told the researchers that mixed signals can confuse people. Even when people pay attention to the face, body language subtly(微妙的)influences the emotion they read.
