Tom and Jerry, the two cartoon characters, were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera who worked for Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer. The story is about a fight between a house cat and a grey mouse. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera wrote and directed (导演) 114 Tom and Jerry cartoons from 1940 to 1958 at the MGM cartoon studio (演播室)in Hollywood. The cartoons were also named as the 'Greatest Television Shows of All Time’by TIME, in 2000.
Joseph Barbera was a writer and William Hanna was a director. The first cartoon they made was named Puss Gets the Boot and it came out in February, 1940. But it lost to another MGM cartoon at the Academy Awards (奥斯卡金像奖). After that, Hanna and Barbera held a competition to give the cat and mouse a new name and appearance. At last, John Carr won the competition with his suggestion of Tom and Jerry.21·cn·jy·com
Hanna and Barbera came up with many ideas about Tom and Jerry. The final one of Hanna and Barbera’s was Tot Watchers. It came out in August, 1958, after the MGM cartoon studio closed down in 1957. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera both worked for MGM in the late 1930s. Their boss told them to make funny cartoons. Together they thought of the idea of a cat and a mouse. They thought it would be funny if the mouse was clever and always got the cat into trouble.
