写作训练:
A. 根据下列要点, 写一篇题为“My favorite pop star”的演讲稿。
“As a little snail with a big dream,
I will climb up step by step,
to make my dream come true,
the road in front of me is hard to go,
yes, I know,
but I will still move step by step,
To make my dream come true.”
Sample version:
My favorite pop star
Good afternoon, everybody here. My favorite pop star is Jay Chou.
The first reason why I like Jay is that he really sings very well. He has a very good voice, which sounds very comfortable. What’s more, he sings in a completely different way. It is said that one of his songs has been taken into the textbooks. All the students in Shanghai will learn his song “Snail”(蜗牛) in the classrooms.
The second reason is that he is a hardworking boy. He inspires me a lot. When he was young he met with a lot of difficulties. He had a lonely childhood because of the divorce between his mother and his father. He even thought of committing suicide because of failures in the exam. But he gave up the idea and made his dream come true at last. Just as we know, “Where there is will, there is a way.”
Finally, I want to end my speech with some words of his song “Snail”,
“As a little snail with a big dream,
I will climb up step by step,
to make my dream come true,
the road in front of me is hard to go,
yes, I know,
but I will still move step by step,
To make my dream come true.”
Joy in Life
Do you know where joy in life comes from? Maybe you will say, “I feel happy while I’m reading” or “Playing basketball can give me joy.” Even some of you may feel happy just when you sleep. To this question, different people may have different answers. My answers are even different from time to time.
I have been seeking for joy in life for a long time. I tried many ways such as reading funny books, having sports with others and getting close to nature. But they cannot really make me happy sometimes. However, at other times, I can feel happy even if I do nothing interesting. I didn’t know why this happened.
Luckily, life has told me recently that joy in life comes from having fine emotions, trusting yourself, and relaxing.
Joy in life can never be pretended by wearing a mask. In fact, people who have joy do not need to talk about it. They just live out their joy and affect others naturally.
However, some people work for it directly, but finally they failed as they don’t love what they do. Joy in life goes, like happiness, to those who have higher objectives in their heart. It’s a surprise of great, simple life.
It is said that the more you give, the more you will get. Yes. The joy of life comes from what we put into life, not from what we seek to get from it.

Olaf Stapledon wrote a book called First and Last Men, in which he looked millions of years ahead. He told of different men and of strange civilizations(文明), broken up by long 'dark ages' in between. In his view, what is called the present time is no more than a moment in human history and we are just the First Men. In 2,000 million years from now there will be the Eighteenth or Last Men.
However, most of our ideas about the future are really very short-sighted. Perhaps we can see some possibilities for the next fifty years. But the next hundred? The next thousand? The next million? That's much more difficult.
When men and women lived by hunting 50,000 years ago, how could they even begin to picture modern life? Yet to men of 50,000 years from now, we may seem as primitive(原始的)in our ideas as the Stone-Age hunters do to us. Perhaps they will spend their days goal locking to make new spundels, or struggling with their ballalators through the cribe. These words, which I have just made up, have to stand for things and ideas that we simply can't think of.
So why bother even to try imagining life far in the future? Here are two reasons. First unless we remember how short our own lives are compared with the whole human history, we are likely to think our own interests are much more important than they really are. If we make the earth a poor place to live because. we are careless or greedy(贪婪) or quarrelsome. our grand-children will not bother to think of excuses for us.
Second, by trying to escape from present interests and imagine life far in the future, we may arrive at quite fresh ideas that we can use ourselves. For example, if we imagine that in the future men may give up farming, we can think of trying it now. So set you imagination free when you think about the future.

B.life has changed a great deal
C.it is useless to plan for the next 50 years
D.it is difficult to tell what will happen in the future
3.Spundels and ballalators are used in the text to refer to _________.
A.tools used in farming B.ideas about modern life
C.unknown things in the future D.hunting skills in the Stone Age
4.According to the writer of the text, imagining the future will _________.
A.serve the interests of the present and future generations
B.enable us to better understand human history
C.help us to improve farming
D.make life worth living

He was the baby with no name. Found and taken from the north Atlantic 6 days after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, his tiny body so moved the salvage (救援) workers that they called him “our baby.” In their home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, people collected money for a headstone in front of the baby's grave (墓), carved with the words: “To the memory of an unknown child.” He has rested there ever since.
But history has a way of uncovering its secrets. On Nov. 5, this year, three members of a family from Finland arrived at Halifax and laid fresh flowers at the grave. “This is our baby,” says Magda Schleifer, 68, a banker. She grew up hearing stories about a great-aunt named Maria Panula,42, who had sailed on the Titanic for America to be reunited with her husband. According to the information Mrs. Schleifer had gathered, Panula gave up her seat on a lifeboat to search for her five children -- including a 13-month-old boy named Eino from whom she had become separated during the final minutes of the crossing. "We thought they were all lost in the sea," says Schleifer.
Now, using teeth and bone pieces taken from the baby's grave, scientists have compared the DNA from the Unknown Child with those collected from members of five families who lost relatives on the Titanic and never recovered the bodies. The result of the test points only to one possible person: young Eino. Now, the family sees: no need for a new grave. "He belongs to the people of Halifax," says Schleifer. "They've taken care of him for 90 years."

Treasure hunts(寻宝)have excited people's imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues(线索)found in a book when he wrote a children's story, Masquerade, in 1979.The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of "red herrings", or false clues, to mislead them.
Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic(逻辑), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: "One of Six to Eight "under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII's six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.
Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue,?and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth £3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.

In 1901, H.G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers(探险者) landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the "moon people" they met. In turn, the "moon people" expressed their surprise. "Why, "they asked, "are you traveling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?"
H.G. Wells could only imagine travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the "moon people" asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo,?Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The "Chunnel", a tunnel(隧道)connecting England and France, is now complete.
But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called "Alice Cities." The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices,?shopping, and so on. A solar dome(太阳能穹顶)would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth's space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H. G. Wells' "moon people" would agree. Would you?

Genghis Khan
Genghis Khan, the great Mongol conqueror, was born in about 1162. His father, a petty Mongol chieftain, named the boy Temujin, after a defeated rival chieftain, and for some years the surviving members of the family lived in constant danger and poverty. This was just the beginning, Temujin's situation was to become a lot worse before it got better. When he was a young man, he was captured in a attack by a rival tribe. To prevent his escaping, a wooden collar was placed around his neck. From then on, he was kept as a prisoner in a primitive, barren country, There Temujin rose to become the most powerful man in the world. His rise started when he managed to escape from his captors. He then allied himself with Toghril, a friend of his father's, and chieftain of one of the related tribes living in the area. There followed many years of cruel warfare among these various Mongol tribes, in the course of which Temujin gradually fought his way to the top. The tribesmen of Mongolia had long been known as skilled horsemen and fierce warriors. Throughout history, they had made unexpected attacks into northern China. However, before the rise of Temujin, the various tribes had always spent most of their energy in fighting each other. By a combination of military power, diplomacy, ruthlessness and organizational ability, Temujin managed to join all of these tribes together under his leadership, and in 1206 a meeting of the Monglo chieftains proclaimed him Genghis Khan, or "the universal emperor". The powerful military machine that Genghis Khan had assembled was then turned outward upon neighboring nations. He first attacked the Western Xia state in northwestern China and the Jin Empire in northern China. While these battles were going on, a strong disagreement arose between Genghis Khan and the Khwarezm Shah Muhammad, who ruled a considerable empire in Persia and central Asia. In 1219, Genghis led his armies against the Khwarezm Shah. Central Asia and Persia were overrun, and the Khwarezm Shah's empire was completely destroyed. While other Mongol armies were attacking Russia, Genghis Khan himself led a raid into Afghanistan and northern India. He returned to Mongolia in 1225, and died there in 1227. 18. What became of Temujin after his father's death? A. He was driven to despair. B. He was put in prison. C. He was reduced to begging for a living. D. He was forced to leave his own country.19.
