My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job.I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my classmates,Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve!What a great country,I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary,I knew what I had to do.
On that fateful night, after everyone went to bed,I took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉台).Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character.
I woke up before everyone else on Christmas Day and ran to the fireplace. To make a sob story short,I was hit with the reality of an empty sock and the biggest lie ever told.I burst into tears, quickly took down the sock, and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.Santa was dead.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up,and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story.I had to make it as funny as possible,or else I would cry.
How could I know that Santa was just late?Nine years ago,on Christmas Eve,an older man with a white beard and a red cap knocked on my front door.He said,“I’ve been looking for you for twenty-five years.” He handed me a bulging red stocking, winked, and left.On top of the stocking was a card.It read:“For
Becky—I may have missed you in the second grade, but you’ve always lived in my heart.Santa.”
Through tear-blurred eyes,I recognized the handwriting of Jill,a friend I had met just two months before.I later discovered that the older man was her father.Jill had seen the hurt little girl underneath the thirty-something woman and decided to do something about it.
So now I believe that Santa is real.I don’t mean the twinkle-eyed character of children’s mythology or the creation of American holiday marketers. Those Santas annoy and sadden me.I believe in the Santa Claus that lives inside good and thoughtful people. This Santa does not return to the North Pole after a crazy delivery but lives each day purposefully, really listens to friends, and then plans deliberate acts of kindness.
25.What does the underlined part “what I had to do” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

The next time you see birds flying in a V,consider this:A new study says they design the flapping of their wings accurately to help them on their way.
That’s what scientists concluded after tracking a group of large black birds—each equipped with a tiny GPS device—that had been trained to follow a small aircraft. One expert in animal flight said just gathering the data, which included every wing flap, was a remarkable accomplishment.
Scientists have long theorized that many birds adopt a V formation for aerodynamic (空气动力的) reasons. When a bird flies,it leaves a wake. The idea is that another bird can get a uplifting from the air in that wake by flying behind the first bird and off to the side. When a group of birds use this trick, they form a V.
It’s been difficult to study this in the wild, but researchers from the University of London’s Royal Veterinary College and elsewhere met that challenge by partnering with a conservation program that is trying to reintroduce the endangered wading bird in Europe.21·cn·jy·com
For about a decade, the program has hand-reared ibises (人工繁殖的朱鹭) from zoos and taught them their migration route by leading the way with a piloted craft.
Normally, the leader of a V-formation would be a parent bird. With the program’s help, the researchers tracked 14 young ibises as they migrated between Austria and Italy.
An analysis of a seven-minute period showed that when the ibises flew in a V,
they positioned themselves in just the right places to use the updraft in another bird’s wake, which lets them conserve their energy.
They also appeared to time the flapping of their wings to take full advantage of that updraft,by making a wingtip follow the same path through the air as the wingtip of the bird up ahead. It’s like one car following another on a roller coaster.
And when one bird flew directly behind another instead,it appeared to adjust its flapping to reduce the effects of the wake’s downdraft. So birds can either sense or predict the wake left by their flock mates and adjust their flapping accordingly,a remarkable ability, the researchers said.
29.What does the expert in animal flight think of the study?
A.It was a big achievement.
B.It only gathered some useful data.
C.It was done in too short a time period.
D.It didn’t involve the data of wild birds.
30.How does the bird behind fly?
A.Directly behind the bird up ahead.
B.Off to the side of the bird up ahead.
C.To the left of the bird up ahead.
D.To the right of the bird up ahead.
31.Why do birds fly in a V,according to the new study?www-2-1-cnjy-com
A.To protect themselves from being hurt.
B.To prevent themselves from getting lost.
C.To save energy.
D.To reduce the resistance of airflow.
32.A bird flying directly behind will adjust its flapping in order to .?
A.follow the wake from the bird up ahead
B.predict the wake left by other birds
C.follow the same path through the air
D.avoid being much influenced by the effects of downdraft

Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient—no matter where he or she may be.
Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(症状)are the most obvious example.Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(远程诊断)will be based on real physiological data(生理数据)from the actual patient.A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone ,it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.
Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural (countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts’ opinions.
But there is one problem.Bandwidth(宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex (复杂)medical pictures around the world—CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users.Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.
Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosis are common.
33.The writer chiefly talks about .?
A.the use of telemedicine
B.the online doctors
C.medical care and treatment
D.communication improvement
34.Which of the following statements is true according to the text?
A.Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.www.21-cn-jy.com
B.It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.
C.Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.21教育名师原创作品
D.Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.
35.The“problem”in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that .?
A.bandwidth isn’t big enough to send complex medical pictures
B.the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yet
C.communication satellites can only deal with short-term needs
D.there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care
With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosis are common.
根据第四段第二句话 Bandwidth(宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex(复杂) medical pictures around the world — CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users.

For people with thousands of pages to read, speed reading seems like manna (甘露) from heaven. In addition, speed reading helps lighten the load of information you have to absorb since it provides a filter that you can use in screening all bits of information before you approach it.21世纪教育网21世纪教育网
36. Examining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension.Thorough reading may no longer be necessary in some cases, such as when you only need an outline of a certain document.?
Another skill that can ease the burden of a reader is the ability to read words in blocks.Make sure you do not spend too long on a certain block.37. This will also make reading less tiresome and boring.?
To master this important skill, you have to practice reading more and more words in a certain block at a time.A suggestion shared by some experts regarding this step is to increase the distance between you and the document you are reading. If you can read more and more words in one block, you can cut down on the time it usually takes you to read a certain text and you will be able to read more in a shorter period.
Readers should also practice reducing the number of times they go back to previous sections or blocks.Using a pointer such as the tip of a pencil or pen can also help to make the flow of your reading smoother and faster.38. Thus, your speed in reading will largely depend on the speed of the movement of your pointer.?
If you still find yourself confused about the topic even after you have finished reading the document,do not re-read right away.Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading.39. Getting your own reading corner will also help.?
40. Continue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned and soon, you’ll achieve the reading speed that will work best for you.?
A.In this technique, your eyes will follow the tip of the pointer.
B.This saves time and reduces the effort that you have to make.
C.Taking a short break first is recommended before reading the material again.
D.As a final note, the most important point is consistent and deliberate practice.
E.Your invaluable time can be saved if you can have your reading speed doubled.
F.The first step to increase your reading speed is to identify the specific information you need.
G.Reducing the time you spend on a specific number of words in a block will make no big difference.

41.C 根据空前的“his goodnight”和空后的“We lay down in his little bed”以及常识可知,此处指父亲给儿子睡前道晚安这一惯例(routine)。
43.A 根据“it will be me touching you”可知,这里表示有某种不确定的东西,所以用something。
46.C 根据上文settled back for his goodnight...
50.C 由下文的“short-lived”“would soon be”“short while”可知,作者认为这样的时刻极其短暂。
51.C 根据空后的定语从句that forms a three-year-old’s life,可知此处指三岁孩童生命中的这种天真(innocence)。
52.D 上下文中“short-lived”和“forms a three-year-old’s life...this short while”都是提示,故此处指这样的时间很快就消失了(gone)。
56.C 根据空前的“doorkeeper,driver”和空后的“in the house”可知,此处选cleaner。
59.C 根据下文的“look back at these years”“the memories of their lives with you”可知,这里指孩子长大后离开(left)家。
contribute to 是……

70. (relax) that we didn’t mind.?
65.been charged charge...for...
apologize for...
此处特指“在顶楼”,应表达为on the top floor。

this year今年,前不用加介词,故去掉in。
Why not do...
at the bottom of在……
pleasant/pleasing令人满意的,主语一般为物,pleased满意的,主语一般为人,故改为pleasant/pleasing。

One possible version:
Dear editor,
I’m a senior high school student. It’s reported that in China many children in mountainous areas still can’t go to school because of poverty.Last week, our class held a discussion about how to help them to go to school and have a happy childhood.
Here are our suggestions.First, some old textbooks and clothes can be collected and sent to those children so that they can be reused by them.Second,it’s also very important to appeal to more people and social organizations to help and care for those poor children. As far as I’m concerned,we should save some of our pocket money and give it to those children in need.Above all,we should try our best to help them.
We’d really appreciate it if you can, through your English Weekly, increase public awareness of the poor children’s living conditions and call on more people to help them.?21*cnjy*com
