Many of us don’t pay much attention to the importance of eye care. It is said that if you take care of your body, then you can surely be healthy. That is why our eyes should be given a lot of care. Natural eye care should be put in a number one place.
There are several causes leading to poor eyesight like not eating enough food, genes (基因) and aging (老化). Televisions,
computers and reading are also the causes of having poor eyesight. If you happen to work in front of a computer, you’d better take a break every once in a while.
Something dirty can cause redness and it will make you feel uncomfortable. It is bad for your eyes, too. If this happens, the best way is to clean your eyes by using cold water. You must also try your best to protect your eyes from harmful things. For example, sunglasses are not just for fashion but they can also serve as a great way to protect your eyesight from UV rays.
Eating healthy foods will do good to your eyesight. Remember that vitamins A, C and E are good for eyes. Try to eat
food groups that have these vitamins. And you should do eye exercises because they protect your eyesight, too. If a person exercises regularly (定期地) and eats the right kind of food, his

In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner?—?a hot, cooked meal; or they can take a packed lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents know what their children want. Cath, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they hate school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning. ”

Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as good stews and curries for the children instead.
So Jamie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.

Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood-powered or coal-powered stoves.
One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the “Sol-4”. “It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker.”
The “Sol-4” works by reflecting(反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also much “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such?individuals?would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.
At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs about $2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment. ??????
1. The passage is mainly about_______.??
?? A. solar cookers?????????????????????????????B. smoke pollution
?? C. solar power experts???????????????????D. breathing illness
2. The “sol-4” is mainly used to?????
?? A. shorten the time of cooking
?? B. reduce the cost of making cookers
?? C. raise money through donations to help African people
?? D. reduce the number of deaths caused by harmful smoke
3. The underlined word “individuals” in Paragraph 4 most probably means “________”.
?? A. cookers???????????????????? B. mirrors?????????? C. people???????? ??? D. experts
4. Which of the following about the “sol-4” is TRUE?
?? A. It is six to eight square meters of mirrors.
?? B. It can work in any weather condition now.
?? C. It can also heat the pan by lighting firewood.
?? D. It is more environment-friendly than other cookers.
5. What can we infer from the text?
?? A. The “sol-4” will be designed in a smaller size.
?? B. More Africans can use the solar cookers in the future.
?? C. The “sol-4” is the first product of the South African company.
?? D. The African government will provide poor people with solar cookers.

On Nov.18th,1908, three men went up in a balloon. They started early in London. The headman was Augusta Gaudron, and the other two men were Tannar and Maitland. They had a big balloon and they were ready for a long way.
Soon they heard the sea. They were carrying the usual rope, and it was hanging down from the basket of the balloon. At the end of the rope they had tied a metal box. Last year in the UK at least 45 people died and 900 more were injured (受伤的) in car accidents where drivers were using their mobile phones.Yet many people continue to use them while driving even though it’s dangerous.
Research has shown that it is difficult to concentrate on (专注于) driving and talking at the same time.It can even be more dangerous than driving after drinking too much. A recent study found that when drivers were talking on their mobile phones, their stopping times were 30 percent slower than when they had drunk too much—and nearly 50 percent slower than when they were driving normally. It also found that drivers talking on mobile phones were less able to control their cars than drunk drivers.
And talking isn’t even the most serious problem, but texting is. Unbelievably, another recent study reported that 22%?of adults admitted (承认) they had sent a text message while driving at least once in the past month. An average (平均的) text message takes 90 seconds to write and send. That means for one and a half minutes a driver is looking at their phone’s screen and not at the road. The arrival of new smart phones such as the iPhone will only make things worse as they will allow users to do more things than ever before.
Using a mobile phone while driving puts others’ lives at risk. No matter how well we drive,if another driver is not careful,we are put in danger by their actions. Such drivers are selfish, careless and should have their driving licences? (驾照) cancelled (撤销).

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
?Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”.
?As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
?My hope turned to disappointment (失望), then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (折叠) and refolded many times.
?Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

People in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something that is polite in one country may be quite impolite in another. In Britain, you mustn’t lift (举起) your bowl to your mouth when you are having some soup. But it’s different in China. And in Japan you even needn’t worry about making a noise when you have it. It shows that you are enjoying it. Making a noise is considered as (被认为) bad manners (举止,礼仪) in Britain. If you are a visitor in Mongolia(蒙古), what manners do they wish you to have? They wish you to give a loud “burp” (打嗝) after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like the food.
In Britain, you should try not to put your hands on the table when you’re having a meal. In Mexico(墨西哥), however, they hope you keep the hands on the table during a meal.
