The Han Dynasty(朝代) in China ruled from 206 B.C. to A.D.220. A dynasty is a line of rulers from the same family that holds power for a long time. Liu Bang was the first ruler of the Han Dynasty. He called himself King of Han, which was one of the states he ruled. Liu followed the teaching of the Chinese thinker Confucius(孔子). These teachings stressed love, goodness, and learning. Liu set up a school for children to learn Confucianism(儒教). They also learned writing, poetry, and art. A later Han ruler, Wudi, created a civil service examination. People could go to school to study for this test. Those who passed became government officials. Wudi opened the Silk Road. This trade route(路线) linked China with other countries.
To the Han people, family included all of the living generations. It also included ancestors(祖先) who had died and people who had not been born yet. The Han people believed that it was a good luck to have five generations living together. The father was the head of the family. He decided what his children would do and whom they married. A woman could be the family head if her husband died. Boys were educated at school, but girls received their education at home.
Most of the people were farmers. They lived in mud houses. More than one family might live together and work the land. They worked from sunup until sundown.
About 10 percent of the people lived in the cities. Cities were laid out(布局) in a square. A wall surrounded each city. One entered or left through a gate, watched by guards. People shopped in the marketplace. At that time people lived peacefully and happily.

World temperatures could increase 2℃ by the year 2040. However, the increase could be three times as great in the world coldest area. This could cause the icebergs (冰山) to melt(融化)and 85 the level of the ocean by one or two meters. Many cities near the sea would be 86 water.
Why is this happening? There is too much CO2 in the air. When oil, gas, and wood burn, they produce large tons of CO2 into the atmosphere(大气层) every year. The CO2 lets sunlight enter the earth’s atmosphere and 87 the earth. However, it does not let as much heat leave the atmosphere and enter the space. It is like a blanket. The heat can pass from the sun through the blanket to warm the earth. The heat stays there and cannot 88 go out through the blanket again.
Scientists call this the greenhouse effect. They say we must start planning now. We mustn’t burn too much oil, gas, and wood.
However, other scientists 89 . They say there is no reason to worry because we have thirty years to plan. They believe there is 90 for the world to slow this down or stop it. We just have to prepare for a high temperature world.

In every class there are some students who do very well and some who do not. That doesn’t mean that the students who do not well are stupid. There can be many r 92 why a student does not do well. Perhaps the person is very smart but doesn’t write exams very well. Perhaps they are smart b 93 lazy and do not know how to study and don’t study hard. Perhaps, in fact, they are not smart at all. The exam results don’t really tell you that; they simply tell you how well you have done compared with o 94 students at the same grade level as you are. In other words, exams do not measure (衡量) accurately how smart you are because they can’t measure that.
However, this is the way the system works and there isn’t much you can do with it. If you u 95 that getting good marks on an exam is about how to prepare for and to write exams and not just about what facts you know, it can help you to do b 96 .
The good news is that it will be over soon. You are very young and, for you, a y 97 seems like a long time, but compared with the rest of your life, you will finish school and go into the working world soon enough. Getting a good job, of course, depends on having done well in school, so you need to decide that you are going to do well, no matter how h 98 it is.

It was midday when I got the call that my grandfather was not well and his condition was rapidly getting worse. My family did not know how long he had left. People had been visiting him throughout the day and were basically saying good-bye.
I knew I had to get to the hospital to tell him how much I loved him. When I got to the hospital, I hurriedly searched for his hospital room. I walked to my grandfather’s bed and quietly whispered, “ Hello, Grandpa.”
I pulled up a chair and began talking to him. While I asked about his condition(状况), he told me, “ I’ll be fine. ” although we both knew that wasn’t true. Then he asked me with a smile how I was doing.
I felt special when my grandpa wanted to know how I was doing. I knew I wasn’t there to tell him how I was doing. I made the decision that I had to show my thanks to him. I clutched his hand. From the expression on my face, he knew I had something important to say.
Drawing nearer to him, I said, “ Grandpa, I have to tell you something.” By this time, the tears were streaming down my face. All of years of love that I had not let him know, had become free.
I took a deep breath. In doing this, our eyes locked. Our eyes spoke more than words ever could. I burst out, “ Grandpa, I just want to let you know how much l love you. I hope you already know that; yet I just wanted to make sure. ”
He said smilingly, “ I know. Thank you for telling me that. All I have on this planet is my family and my love for them. If there is anything I could ask of you, I want you to be good to your family. That’s all I want of you.” I promised him that I would.
