Mrs. Jones was very fond of singing. She had a good voice, except that some of her high notes(音调) tended to(往往会) sound like a gate which someone had forgotten to oil. Mrs. Jones was very conscious of(意识到)) this weakness, and took every opportunity she could find to practise these high notes. As she lived in a small house, where she could not practise without disturbing the rest of the family, she usually went for a long walk along the country roads whenever she had time, and practised her high notes there. Whenever she heard a car or a person coming along the road, she stopped and waited until she could no longer be heard before she started practising again, because she was a shy person, and because she was sensitive about those high notes.
One afternoon, however, a fast, open car came up behind her so silently and so fast that she did not hear it until it was only a few yards from her. She was singing some of her highest and most difficult notes at the time, and as the car passed her, she saw an anxious expression suddenly come over its driver's face. He put his brakes(刹车)on violently (猛力地), and as soon as the car stopped, jumped out and began to examine all his tyres(轮胎)carefully.
Mrs. Jones did not dare to tell him what the noise he had heard had really been, so he got back into his car and drove off as puzzled as he had been when he stopped.

There are stock(股票) markets in large cities in many countries. Stock markets in Paris, London, Tokyo, Shanghai and New York are among the largest and most well-known. The stock market, also called stock exchange, is a place where people can buy or sell shares(股票) of a factory or company. And each share means certain ownership(股份)of a factory or company.
Different people go to stock markets. Some are rich, who want to get more money than they have. Others are not very rich, who buy stocks and try to become rich. Still others buy stocks as part of their plan to save money.

All the Whites’ farm animals—the cows and the goats, the ducks and the chickens got along well with Roger---one llama (美洲驼). But since llamas are used to thinking of animals like coyotes(土狼)and dogs as threats(威胁), it took Roger a few weeks to accept the family dog.
Each llama has its own personality, and Roger’s special qualities quickly won the hearts of the Whites’ family. “Roger has a wonderful nature with most people,” Mrs. White said,“But if he is not pleased with you, he won’t come around you at all. If he really doesn’t like you, he’ll leave and take all of the sheep with him.”
Roger protects the sheep and lambs in two ways. First, he keeps the sheep together. A hungry coyotes will try to scatter(驱散) the flock(羊群) and then pick off a weak or small animal that has become separated from the rest. But when a coyote threatens the Whites’ sheep, they all run to Roger, depending on him to defend them.
And he does, with his second defense: confronting(与…正面交锋) the coyote. Llamas are very curious and will run at fast speed to investigate(调查)anything that looks interesting. When a coyote sees a three-hundred-pound llama dashing toward(冲向) it, the coyote will not usually wait around to see what the llama wants.
And once a llama realizes that a coyote is threatening the flock, the llama will stand between the coyote and the sheep to defend them. Often, the llama will charge toward the coyote with its head down. As it runs, it will sometimes call out an alarm to the flock in a high-pitched warble(高调颤声). Since Roger’s arrival, coyotes haven’t got any sheep from the Whites’.

My friend Jack once said that he needed to live in a quiet place to relax more. That was why he decided to move to the country last month. He said that life in the city was too noisy and the streets were too crowded. He wanted some peace. So Jack bought a new house in the country far away from a city. His new house has a big garden. He said he wanted to plant all kinds of flowers in it. He thought he would like to grow some vegetables, too. Then he wouldn’t have to buy them at the supermarkets any more and could cook the vegetables he grew himself.
Last week, Jack called me. He seemed very upset.
“What’s the matter ” I asked. “I thought you enjoyed the life in the country.”
“I did,” Jack said. “But there are too many mice in my garden.”
Then Jack told me that when he was working in his garden one day, he saw a very big mouse running in his garden! He said it was really a big surprise to him. He also said that he was thinking of moving back to the city because he’d rather live with lots of people than with lots of mice.

London’s River Thames has 27 bridges. The most famous of all is Tower Bridge. One surprising thing about Tower Bridge is that it opens in the middle. It does this to let the big ship through.. If you are lucky enough to see the bridge with its two opening arms high up in the air, you will never forget it.
On its north side stands the Tower of London itself. Although they look the same, the tower is 1000 years old, and Tower Bridge is 100. It was built in the 1890’s. By 1850 everyone agreed that a bridge across the Thames near the Tower was necessary, but the designers argued about the new bridge for another 30 years, because they had two big problems to solve. The new bridge must look like the Tower. Everyone said so. It must not look like a modern bridge. But in order to let the tall ships pass, it is necessary to have a modern bridge. At last two very clever designers had the idea of opening up the bridge in the middle and at the same time making it look like the old Tower, so everyone was happy. The bridge took eight years to build. But it was a wonderful success.

Use the following points as a guide :
1. Should mother always be responsible for the housework
2. Do you think children should share the housework with their parents
Why or why not
Do you think that mother should be the only person to be responsible for the heavy housework Or, do you still hold the view that what children should do is only study In my opinion, the things just need to be changed. And I think sharing the housework can be a good way. The reasons are as follows.
As the society is changing rapidly, some old thoughts have been given up, women begin to go out working to make a living. Women no longer stay at home all day. They work as hard as men do, and even get as much salary as men do, so it’s unfair for them to be the only ones doing the housework.
Furthermore, it’s also a child’s duty to reduce the burden of his pared with working, study is usually much easier. So it’s reasonable that we children help do some of the housework instead of leaving it all to our tired parents.
