Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient.
At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of a contract we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.
Trust is our first inclination (倾向). Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us. The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(相互的) trust, not distrust. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.2·1·c·n·j·y

Music is an international language. The songs that are sung or played by instruments are beautiful to all people everywhere.
Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers (扬声器) and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.
Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, politics, and activities of the American people. But most of the radio broadcast is music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in every state. Once a popular singer is heard throughout the country, young people buy his or her tapes. Some of the money from these tapes comes to the singer. Wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national star.
Besides pop music, there are two other kinds of music that is important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans. The other is called western or country music. This was started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they were watching. Today, any music about country life and the love between a country boy and his girl is called western or country music.

阅读理解(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

E-money, or electronic money, is money that you exchange electronically, as opposed to actual notes and coin. Generally, you conduct e-money or e-currency transactions (交易) over the Internet, or with smart cards that are linked to a bank account. More and more people are also using mobile phones to make such transactions.
E-money can be used anytime and anywhere. It is probably the best form of money to use for international transactions, as there are no troubles of currency exchange. It is more reliable, faster than paper checks and drafts (汇票), and has low costs of transactions. Today, with e-money becoming more popular, banks are competing to reduce transfer costs and provide account holders with good deals. If you send someone a check, it will take a few days to clear. But with an online money transaction, the money reaches the other person's account almost instantly. These transactions can be made after the bank has closed, and even on holidays.
When you carry a large amount of money, there is always a chance of it being lost or stolen. E-money is safer than currency in this regard. Every transaction requires you to provide a personal identification number (PIN) for the payment to be completed. Electronic funds transfers can be more secure than cash or check transactions. All you have to do is take some simple precautions to make sure that your card or online account is not misused.
Each and every transaction made with electronic money is recorded in the bank's and the user's online records. These records have all the essential information about the transaction: the name of the payer, the name of the receiver, and the date, place and time it took place. This makes it more dependable, and users can access their records of transactions at any time of the day.
21. How many means of e-money transactions are mentioned in the passage?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
22. What does a payer have to provide to complete an e-money transaction?
A. The receiver's bank account.
B. The payer's mobile phone number.
C. The name of the receiver.
D. The personal identification number.
23. Which is NOT the feature of e-money?
A. People can use cell phones to make e-money transactions.
B. With online money transactions, you don't worry about where you are and when it is.
C. It can secure your money against being lost or stolen.
D. Each e-money transaction is recorded in the bank's and the user's online records.
24. What's the writer's purpose of writing this passage?
A. To explain how to use e-money.
B. To show how popular e-money is.
C. To introduce the advantages of e-money.
D. To promote a new kind of transaction.
25. The second and third paragraphs are developed ________.
A. by using statistics B. by making comparisons
C. by giving examples D. by listing categories

Text 10
M:When I was six, I went to live with my grandparents on their farm. Even though they were in their 60s, they still got up early and worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week. I liked the sound of the chickens telling me it was time to get up. The smell of the air on those mornings was so fresh and clean. At first, I helped my grandfather feed the animals before school. When I got a little older, I helped my grandmother prepare breakfast. No matter what, I spent two hours helping out before my school bus picked me up. When I got back from school, the first thing I had to do was my homework. But I always tried to finish it quickly so I could help out around the farm. On weekends, instead of going into the main town like most of my friends, I worked in the fields with my grandparents. By the time I went to middle school, I was running the family store where we sold meat, milk, fruit, and vegetables. It was a great experience for me because I started to learn the business side of farming. Now that I'm in high school, a lot of my friends talk about going to a university far away. Not me. I'm planning to take over my grandparents' land full-time. My farming classes at the local college start next year.
