Period 1 Warming Up & Reading
Teaching aims:
To talk about endangered species and enable the students to say something about wildlife protection and environmental protection.
To help the students get to know “how to help wildlife” by reading and discussing.
3. To let the students know the main idea of the passage.
Important & Difficult Points:
To know the serious situation of the wildlife.
To realize the importance of wildlife protection.
How to get the main idea.
Teaching aids: multi-media.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Lead in:
Show the students a short advertisement about calling on people to protect the wildlife. Then ask them to answer these questions:
1. How many animals are mentioned in this video?
2. What are they? And why are they killed?
(The tiger is killed for its bone; the rhino is killed for horn; the elephant is killed for ivory; the turtle is killed for its shell; the bear is killed for its gallbladder.)
Step 2. Introduce some key words and phrases by asking questions.
(in danger of…, in the wild, decrease, die out, nature reserve, protect…from…
too much hunting, in peace)
Step 3. Reading
1. Skimming:
Give the students two minutes to read the text quickly, find out the three places Daisy has been to and what animals she met.
2. Intensive reading:
Read Paragraph 1 and answer these questions:
How did the antelope feel?
Why has the antelope in Tibet become an endangered species?
3. Jigsaw reading: The whole class is divided into two groups.
The students in group 1 read Paragraph 2, and then write down its main idea and the supporting details in the correct boxes. And the students in group 2 read Paragraph 3&4, and then write down its main idea and the supporting details in the correct boxes. (Activity 2 on P27)
4. Encourage the students to use one or two sentences to get the main idea of this passage.
(Daisy took a flying carpet to travel and talked with some animals, which made her know the importance of the wildlife protection.)
Step 4. Discussion
If you were Daisy, what should you do to protect the wild animals?
Discuss the question in groups.
(Never kill endangered animals.
Protect the environment.
Never buy endangered animals’ products and tell my friends not to do so!
Make people be aware of the importance of wildlife protection.

Step 5. Homework
Write a letter to WWF about the current situation of the endangered animals and what we can do to protect them.
