Six-month-old
babies
are
strictly
limited
in
what
they
can
remember
about
the
objects
they
see
in
the
world.
If
you
hide
several
objects
from
babies,
they
will
only
remember
one
of
those
objects.
But
a
new
study,
which
was
published
in
an
issue
of
Psychological
Science,
a
journal
of
the
Association
for
Psychological
Science,
finds
that
when
babies
“forget”
about
an
object,
not
all
is
lost.
Researchers
used
to
think
that
babies
less
than
two
years
old
did
not
understand
that
an
object
continues
to
exist
when
it
is
not
in
the
baby’s
view.
But
in
mid-1980s,
new
ways
of
doing
experiments
with
babies
found
that
they
do,
in
fact,
know
that
objects
don’t
disappear
when
they
do
not
look
at
them
--
a
concept
known
as
object
permanence.
But
it
was
still
unknown
what
babies
needed
to
remember
about
objects
in
order
to
remember
their
existence.
Now
Melissa
Kibbe,
of
John
Hopkins
University,
and
Alan
Leslie,
of
Rutgers
University,
are
working
to
figure
out
exactly
what
it
is
that
babies
remember
about
objects.
For
the
new
study,
they
showed
six-month-old
babies
two
objects,
a
disk
and
a
triangle.
Then
they
hid
the
objects
behind
small
screens,
first
one
shape,
then
the
other.
Earlier
research
has
shown
that
young
babies
can
remember
what
was
hidden
most
recently,
but
have
more
trouble
remembering
the
first
object
that
was
hidden.
Once
the
shapes
were
hidden,
they
lifted
the
screen
in
front
of
the
first
object.
Sometimes
they
showed
babies
the
shape
that
was
hidden
there
originally,
but
sometimes
it
was
the
other
shape,
and
sometimes
the
object
had
vanished
completely.
Psychologists
(心理学家)
measure
how
long
babies
look
at
something
to
see
how
surprised
they
are.
In
Kibbe
and
Leslie’s
study,
babies
weren’t
particularly
surprised
to
see
that
screen
had
changed,
for
example,
from
a
triangle
to
a
disk.
But
if
the
object
was
gone
altogether,
the
babies
looked
significantly
longer,
indicating
surprise
at
an
unexpected
result:
“This
shows
that
even
though
babies
don’t
remember
the
shape
of
the
object,
they
know
that
it
should
continue
to
exist,”
Kibbe
says.
“They
remember
the
object
without
remembering
the
features
that
identify(鉴别)
that
object.”
This
helps
explain
how
the
young
brain
processes
information
about
objects,
Leslie
say.
He
thinks
the
brain
has
a
structure
that
acts
like
a
kind
of
pointer,
a
mental
finger
that
points
at
an
object.

the
study,
which
of
the
following
was
unclear
A.
Whether
babies

objects
are
gone.
B.
What
made
babies
remember
objects’
existence.
C.
Whether
babies
can
remember
what
was

D.
Why
babies
were
interested
in

word
“vanished”
probably
means
“_____________

Social
media
is
one
of
the
fastest-growing
industries
in
today’s
world.
A
study
conducted
by
the
US
think
tank
(智囊团)
Pew
Research
Center
showed
that
92
percent
of
teenagers
go
online
daily.
The
wide
spread
of
social
media
has
changed
nearly
all
parts
of
teenagers’
lives.
Changing
relationships
High
school
student
Elly
Cooper
from
Illinois
said
social
media
often
reduces
face-to-face
communication.
“It
makes
in-person
relationships
harder
because
people
give
attention
to
their
phones
instead
of
their
boyfriends
or
girlfriends,”
Cooper
said.
There’s
also
a
greater
possibility
of
things
getting
lost
in
translation
over
social
media.
“If
half
of
your
relationship
is
over
social
media,
you
don’t
really
know
how
the
other
person
is
reacting,”
Sienna
Schulte,
a
junior
student
from
Illinois,
said.
Yet,
some
people
believe
social
media
has
made
it
easier
to
start
relationships
with
anyone
from
anywhere.
Beth
Kaplan
from
Illinois
met
her
long-distance
friend
through
social
media.
He
currently
lives
in
Scotland,
but
they’re
still
able
to
frequently
communicate
with
one
another.
“I
can
feel
close
to
someone
that
I’m
talking
to
via(通过)FaceTime,”
Kaplan
said.
Wanting
to
be
“liked”
The
rise
of
social
media
has
changed
the
way
teenagers
see
themselves.
The
19-year-old
Essena
O’Neill
announced
on
the
social
networking
service
Instagram
that
she
was
quitting
social
media
because
it
made
her
obsessed
(痴迷)
with
appearing
perfect
online.
Negative
comments
also
can
do
great
damage
to
a
teenager’s
self-esteem
(自尊).
In
particular,
anonymous
(匿名的)
social
media
apps
such
as
Yik
Yak
may
provide
opportunities
for
cyber
bullying
(网络欺凌).
The
app
allows
users
within
5
miles
(8
km)
to
create
and
add
comments
to
everything.
Teenagers
who
get
negative
comments
on
these
sites
can’t
help
but
feel
hurt.
Opening
new
doors
However,
Armin
Korsos,
a
student
from
Illinois,
takes
advantage
of
the
comments
he
receives
over
social
media
to
improve
his
videos
on
the
social
networking
site
Youtube.
“Social
media
can
help
people
show
themselves
and
their
talents
to
the
world
in
a
way
that
was
never
possible
before,”
Korsos
said.
But
Korsos
recognizes
that
social
media
has
become
a
distraction
(让人分心的事).“Social
media,
though
it
helps
people
connect
with
their
friends
and
stay
updated,
is
not
all
necessary.”

B.
The
effect
of
social
media
on
teenagers.
C.
How
teenagers
benefit
from
social
media.
D.
Why
social
media
appeals
so
much
to
teenagers.
69.
How
does
social
media
change
relationships,
according
to
the
article
A.
It
pushes
people
to
meet
their
friends
more
often
offline.
B.
It
encourages
people
to
pay
more
attention
to
those
around
them.
C.
It
enables
users
to
understand
accurately
what
others
are
talking
about
online.
D.
It
allows
people
to
keep
in
touch
with
their
friends
who
live
far
away
more
easily.

Essena
O’Neill
decided
to
disconnect
herself
from
social
media
because
______.
A.
she
couldn’t
tolerate
cyberbullying
on
social
media
B.
she
wanted
to
spend
more
time
with
her
friends
in

71.
Which
statement
about
the
use
of
social
media
would
Armin
Korsos
probably
agree
with
A.
The
use
of
social
media
taught
him
to
turn
negative
comments
into
motivations.
B.
Social
media
can
easily
become
an
addiction(着迷),
despite
its
benefits.
C.
Social
media
is
mostly
a
distraction
to
teenagers,
so
it
is
unnecessary
for
it
to
exist.
D.
If
used
well,
social
media
can
create
opportunities
for
teenagers
to
develop
themselves.

I
wanted
to
stop
at
a
sporting
goods
store
“Going
Out
of
Business”
sale
we
passed
in
the
mall.
“There’s
nothing
we
need”,
my
husband’s
usual
ill-tempered
male
comment.
“It’s
all
overpriced
rubbish.
If
they
had
anything
good
they
wouldn’t
be
going
out
of
business.”
“But,
it’s
sporting
goods.
Could
be
some
good
deals
for
the
grandkids.
And,
you
like
boats
and
fishing
stuff.
I’ve
put
up
with
that
photo
of
your
‘dream-canoe’
stuck
on
the
bathroom
mirror
for
years
now.
Maybe
you’d
enjoy
just
looking
around ”
“Are
you
crazy ”
His
eyes
got
funny
and
he
said
something
like.
“This
loser
store
wouldn’t
carry
something
like
that.
And
I’m
sure
not
going
near
those
stupid
crowds.”
I
squared
my
chin
and
marched
into
the
crowded
store.
Aisles
and
aisles
of
sporting
equipment,
boy
toys
were
strung
with
huge
blaring
signs.
CLOSING
OUT
SALE─Up
to
80%
OFF.
NO
REFUNDS.
Up
and
down
the
aisles
I
walked
and
explored,
talking
to
myself
and
enjoying
the
excitement
of
a
sale.All
of
a
sudden,
there,
at
the
back
of
the
store,
in
gleaming
silver,
full
of
lifejackets,
paddles
and
fishing
stuff,
sat
the
exact
canoe
of
my
husband’s
picture.
I
gasped
and
blinked
three
times.
Yup.
It
was
still
there.The
Supremo
Numero-Uno
blah,
blah.
My
heart
beat
wildly.
I
made
my
way
through
the
crowds,
scrambled
over
junk
in
the
aisles
and
nearly
fell
into
the
canoe
looking
for
the
price
tag.
There
it
was─a
little
old,
with
the
manufacturer’s
suggested
retail
price
at
$6,750
plus
tax
crossed
out
and
a
handwritten
TO
CLEAR

AS
IS.
NO
RETURNS.
Must
be
a
mistake.
$6000

Salesman.
I
had
to
talk
to
a
salesman.
I
spotted
a
young
fellow
with
a
“Hi.
I’m
Mathew”
tag
trying
to
hide
out
from
bargain
hunters.
I
grasped
his
sleeve.
“Mathew.
Tell
me
about
this
El
Supremo
canoe.
What’s
wrong
with
it
Why
is
it
only
$750 ”
“Oh.
There’s
nothing
wrong
with
it.
It’s
brand
new.
We’re
closing
the
store
is
all.
It’s
on
clearance
like
everything
else.
I
think
that
includes
lifejackets,
paddles
and
a
bunch
of
fishing
gear,
too.
I’ll
go
check.”
A
few
minutes
later
he
came
back
and
said,
“I’m
sorry
ma’am.
Someone
made
a
mistake.
It’s
supposed
to
be
$4,750
for
the
whole
package.
I
just
talked
to
my
Dad
who
is
running
the
close-out.
He
said
it
was
worth
more
than
$8,000
regular
price
so
it’s
still
a
really
good
deal.”
I
felt
tears
well
up
in
my
eyes.
“Oh
well,”
I
said
sadly.
“Of
course,
it
was
too
good
to
be
true.
This
is
exactly
like
my
husband’s
dreamboat.
He’s
going
to
be
62
years
old
Friday.Had
to
retire
early
for
his
death.
It’s
been
hard
on
just
the
pension(退休金)
but
he
has
been
saving
$10
every
week
for
years
to
buy
one
just
like
this.
Just
an
old
man’s
silly
dream,
you
know.
Always
said
he
wanted
to
spend
his
retirement
out
fishing
in
a
canoe,”
my
voice
reduced
and
I
turned
and
walked
away.
I
was
already
at
the
mall
door
when
Mathew
caught
up
with
me.
“Do
you
have
$750
plus
$25
for
delivery
and
a
bit
more
for
tax,
ma’am ”
I
gasped.
“Yes.
Yes.
That’s
about
all
I
have,”
“Well
then,
you
just
have
your
husband
sitting
on
the
front
porch
on
Friday
morning
around
10
o’clock
so
he
can
be
there
when
my
Dad
and
I
come
to
unload
his
new
boat.
That’syours.”
I
started
to
cry.
My
old
hand
shook
and
I
had
to
squint
(眯眼看)as
I
wrote
out
my
cheque(支票).
Mathew
swallowed
hard.
“Ma’am.
There’s
something
you
should
know.
This
store
was
my
Grandpa’s.
He
ran
it
for
more
than
30
years.
He
always
promised
to
retire
one
day.
Said
he
wanted
to
spend
time
relaxing
and
out
fishing
in
a
canoe.
He
ordered
this
one,
custom,
for
himself
last
year
but,
well,
just
never
took
the
time
off
to
use
it.”He
swallowed
even
harder.
“My
Grandpa
died,
sudden-like,
just
last
week.
He
was
only
68
years
old.
I
think
he’d
be
mighty
happy
that
your
husband
will
get
this
here
canoe.
My
Dad
thinks
so
too.
You
just
have
to
make
sure
he
uses
it
a
lot,
okay
Promise ”
I
handed
Mathew
a
Kleenex
and
we
stood
there
together,
quietly
lost
in
our
own
thoughts
for
a
moment,
blowing
our
noses.
“I
promise,”I
said
and
hugged
my
dear
sweet
husband.

but
they
can
also
be
used
to
test
your
child’s
knowledge
of
grammar,
vocabulary,
and
more.
Who,
What,
Where,
When,
Why,
and
How
Have
your
child
read
the
first
couple
of
paragraphs
of
a
news
story.
Ask
them
to
write
down
all
of
the
important
facts,
such
as
who,
what,
where,
when,
why
and
how.
This
helps
parents
to
see
if
their
children
comprehend
the
basic
facts
and
information.
Grammar
Parents
can
monitor
a
child’s
understanding
of
grammatical
parts
of
speech
(词性)
without
a
grammar
textbook.
Ask
your
child
to
read
a
paragraph
in
an
article
and
then
list
a
specific
number
of
nouns,
verbs,
adjectives,
adverbs,
pronouns,
prepositions
and
the
like,
which
serves
more
of
a
test
of
their
grammatical
knowledge.
Encourage
them
to
list
each
of
these
parts
of
speech
in
a
paragraph.
Then,
reread
the
paragraph
to
see
if
they
missed
anything.
Persuasion
Ask
your
child
to
select
an
advertisement
from
the
newspaper.
Have
them
investigate
how
the
author
expresses
himself
to
influence
their
feelings
about
a
particular
product.
Then,
encourage
them
to
create
an
advertisement
of
their
own
for
an
item
they
do
not
like.
Tell
them
not
to
show
their
true
feelings
and
try
to
make
people
want
to
buy
this
unwanted
item.
After
that,
ask
them
to
list
the
persuasive
techniques
used
in
their
ad.
Facts

Opinions
Select
an
editorial
for
your
middle

read.
Have
your
child
divide
a
piece
of
paper
into
two
columns,
one
marked
fact,
and
the
other
marked
opinion.
Have
your
student
decide
which
column
it
fits
under.
This
will
help
your
child
better
understand
facts
versus
opinions.
Another
related
exercise
is
responding
to
an
editorial.
Encourage
your
child
to
write
letters
to
the
editor
or
responses
to
editorials
or
other
articles.
Before
your
child
sends
his
or
her
letter,
check
the
opinion
section
to
see
what
requirements
there
are.
Headlines

Synonyms
(同义词)
Ask
your
middle
schooler
to
rewrite
a
couple
of
headlines
using
the
synonyms
of
the
originalwords.
Compare
the
headlines.
Do

This
is
a
great
exercise
to
help
students
learn
synonyms
and
expand
their
vocabulary.
If
you
find
your
seventh
or
eighth
grade
child
is
struggling
with
these
newspaper
activities,
it
may
be
an
indicator
that
they
have
