Why
do
men
die
earlier
than
women
The
latest
research
makes
it
known
that
the
reason
could
be
that
men’s
hearts
go
into
rapid
decline
when
they
reach
middle
age.
The
largest
study
of
the
effects
of
ageing
on
the
heart
has
found
that
women’s
longevity
may
be
linked
to
the
fact
that
their
hearts
do
not
lose
their
pumping
power
with
age.
“We
have
found
that
the
power
of
the
male
heart
falls
by
20-25
percent
between
18
and
70
years
of
age,”
said
the
head
of
the
study,
David
Goldspink
of
Liverpool
John
Moores
University
in
the
UK.
“Within
the
heart
there
are
millions
of
cells
that
enable
it
to
beat.
Between
the
age
of
20
and
70,
one-third
of
those
cells
die
and
are
not
replaced
in
men,”
said
Goldspink.
“This
is
part
of
the
ageing
process.”
What
surprises
scientists
is
that
the
female
heart
sees
very
little
loss
of
these
cells.
A
healthy
70-year-old
woman’s
heart
could
perform
almost
as
well
as
a
20-year-old
one’s.
“This
gender(性别)
difference
might
just
explain
why
women
live
longer
than
men,”
said
Goldspink.
They
studied
more
than
250
healthy
men
and
women
between
the
ages
of
18
and
80,
focusing
on
healthy
persons
to
remove
the
confusing
influence
of
disease.
“The
team
has
yet
to
find
why
ageing
takes
a
greater
loss
on
the
male
heart,”
said
Goldspink.
The
good
news
is
that
men
can
improve
the
health
of
their
heart
with
regular
exercise.
Goldspink
stressed
that
women
also
need
regular
exercise
to
prevent
their
leg
muscles
becoming
smaller
and
weaker
as
they
age.
21.
The
underlined

the
second

D.
hearts
and

to
the
text,

scientists
have
known
that
________.
A.
women
have
more
cells
than

Americans
use
many
expressions
with
the
word
dog.
People
in
the
United
States
love
their
dogs
and
treat
them
well.
They
take
their
dogs
for
walks,
let
them
play
outside
and
give
them
good
food
and
medical
care.
However,
dogs
without
owners
to
care
for
them
lead
a
different
kind
of
life.
The
expression,
to
lead
a
dog's
life,
describes
a
person
who
has
an
unhappy
life.
Some
people
say
we
live
in
a
dog-eat-dog
world.
That
means
many
people
are
competing
for
the
same
things,
like
good
jobs.
They
say
that
to
be
successful,
a
person
has
to
work
like
a
dog.
This
means
they
have
to
work
very,
very
hard.
Such
hard
work
can
make
people
dog-tired.
And,
the
situation
would
be
even
worse
if
they
became
sick
as
a
dog.
Still,
people
say
every
dog
has
its
day.
This
means
that
every
person
enjoys
a
successful
period
during
his
or
her
life.
To
be
successful,
people
often
have
to
learn
new
skills.
Yet,
some
people
say
that
you
can
never
teach
an
old
dog
new
tricks.
They
believe
that
older
people
do
not
like
to
learn
new
things
and
will
not
change
the
way
they
do
things.
Some
people
are
compared
to
dogs
in
bad
ways.
People
who
are
unkind
or
uncaring
can
be
described
as
meaner
than
a
junkyard
dog.
Junkyard
dogs
live
in
places
where
people
throw
away
things
they
do
not
want.
But
mean
dogs
are
often
used
to
guard
this
property.
They
bark
or
attack
people
who
try
to
enter
the
property.
However,
sometimes
a
person
who
appears
to
be
mean
and
threatening
is
really
not
so
bad.
We
say
his
bark
is
worse
than
his
bite.
Dog
expressions
also
are
used
to
describe
the
weather.
The
dog
days
of
summer
are
the
hottest
days
of
the
year.
A
rainstorm
may
cool
the
weather.
But
we
do
not
want
it
to
rain
too
hard.
We
do
not
want
it
to
rain
cats
and
dogs.
28.A
person
who
lives
an
unhappy
life
can
be
described
as
“_______”.
A.
becoming
sick
as
a
dog
B.
leading
a
dog’s
life
C.
living
in
a
dog-eat-dog

D.
Working

underlined
word
“mean”
in
Paragraph

most
probably
means
“_______”.
A.
violent
B.
beautiful
C.

D.
nice
30.What
can
we
learn
from
the
text
A.
Everyone
can
be
successful
if
he
learns
from
the
old.
B.
It
might
be
difficult
for
the
young
to
learn

persons

Will
it
matter
if
you
don't
take
your
breakfast
Recently
a
test
was
given
in
the
United
States.
Those
tested
included
people
of
different
ages,
from
12
to
83.
During
the
experiment,
these
people
were
given
all
kinds
of
breakfasts,
and
sometimes
they
got
no
breakfast
at
all.
Special
tests
were
set
up
to
see
how
well
their
bodies
worked
when
they
had
eaten
a
certain
kind
of
breakfast.
The
results
show
that
if
a
person
eats
a
proper
breakfast,
he
or
she
will
work
with
better
effect
than
if
he
or
she
has
no
breakfast.
This
fact
appears
to
be
especially
true
if
a
person
works
with
his
brains.
If
a
student
eats
fruit,
eggs,
bread
and
milk
before
going
to
school,
he
will
learn
more
quickly
and
listen
with
more
attention
to
class.
Opposite
to
what
many
people
believe,
if
you
don't
eat
breakfast,
you
will
not
lose
weight.
This
is
because
people
become
so
hungry
at
noon
that
they
eat
too
much
for
lunch,
and
end
up
gaining
weight
instead
of
losing.
You
will
probably
lose
more
weight
if
you
reduce
your
other
meals.
32.
During
the
test,
those
who
were
tested
were
given
________.
A.
no
breakfast
at

B.
very
rich
breakfast
C.
little
food

D.

33.
The
results
of
the
test
show
that
________.
A.
breakfast
has
great
effect
on
work
and
studies
B.
breakfast
has
little
to
do
with
a
person's
work
C.
a
person
will
work
better
if
he
has
a
simple
breakfast
D.
those

The
passage
mentions
that
many
people
believe
that
if
you
don't
eat
breakfast,
you
will
_________.
A.
lose
weight
B.
not
lose
weight
C.
be
healthier
D.
gain
a
lot
of

35.
Which
of
the
following
is
true
according
to
the
passage
A.
Poor
breakfasts
affect
those
who
work
with
brains.
B.
Breakfast
is
not
important.
C.
Lunch
is
the
most
important.

Dear
editor,
Several
days
ago,
I
heard
that
a
dear

of
mine
had
killed
herself.
I
was
deep
in
sorrow
by
the
sudden
news.
I
can’t
keep
calm
any
longer.
36
.
Life
is
so
precious.
If
we
can
slip
into
death
in
an
impulsive
(冲动的)
moment,
what
use
in
all
our
efforts
and
hopes
Our
families,
our
ambitions,
everything
is
thrown
into
total
darkness.
37
.
Nevertheless,the
suicide
rate
increases
year
by
year,
particularly
of
young
people.
Reasons
may
vary
from
person
to
person,
38
.
First,
today’s
young
people
are
morally
weak.
They
hunger
for
success
but
can
not
face
failure;
they
are
eager
to
be
understood
but
afraid
of
opening
their
hearts
to
others.
They
live
in
a
wide
world,
from
east
to
west,
ancient
to
present,
but
their
hearts
beat
in
a
narrow
desert,
closed
tight,
unable
to
communicate.
Each
becomes
an
isolated
fortress
(孤堡),
lonely,
and
weak.
39
.
As
a
young
teacher,
she
was
devoted
to
her
work
but
was
disappointed
with
her
students’
occasional
failures.
She
fell
in
love
with
a
colleague
but
he
deserted
her.
With
no
friends,
disappointed
at
work
and
in
love,
death
seemed
to
her
the
only
remaining
choice
and
she
took
it.
Another
reason
for
the
weakness
of
today’s
youth,
in
my
opinion,
comes
from
society’s
pressures.
40
.
On
the
other
hand,
society
refuses
to
accept
that
children
sometimes
do
fail.
But
failure
is
more
important
because
it
can
teach
the
young
how
to
win
next
time.
What
can
we
do
to
save
the
desperate
young
I’m

death
B.
yet
I

they

One
day
in
early
December,
we
woke
up
to
discover
a
heavy
fall
of
snow.
“Mom,
can
we
go
__41__
after
breakfast ”
my
eleven-year-old
daughter
Erica
begged.
I
didn’t
want
to
__42__
her
request,
so
we
headed
towards
the
only
__43__
in
our
town.
When
we
arrived,
the
hill
was
crowded
with
people.
We
found
an
open
spot
next
to
a
thin
man
and
his
three-year-old
son.
The
boy
was
already
lying
in
the
sled
(雪橇),
__44__
to
be
launched.
“Come
on,
Daddy!”
he
called.
The
man
looked
over
at
me.
“Okay
if
we
go
__45__ ”
he
asked.
“Sure.
Looks
like
your
son
is
ready
to
go,”
I
said.
With
that,
he
gave
the
boy
a
huge
__46__,
and
off
he
flew!
And
the
father
ran
after
his
son
at
full
speed.
“He
must
be
afraid
that
his
son
is
going
to
__47__
somebody,”
I
said
to
Erica.
“We’d
better
be
__48__,
too.”
Then
we
also
skied
down
the
hill
at
a
great
speed.
As
we
returned
to
the
top,
I
noticed
that
the
man
was
__49__
his
son,
who
was
still
lying
in
the
sled,
back
up
to
the
summit(山顶).
When
we
reached
the
top,
the
boy
was
ready
to
play
again.
Again,
the
father
__50__
him
down
the
hill,
and
then
pulled
both
the
boy
and
the
sled
back
up.
The
little
boy
was
terribly
spoilt
by
his
father,
I
thought.
__51__
he
was
small,
the
child
could
pull
his
own
sled
up
the
hill
once
in
a
while.
This
__52__
went
on
for
more
than
an
hour,
but
the
man
never
__53__,
and
he
was
very
happy
instead.
Finally,
I
could
__54__
it
no
longer.
I
called
to
him,
“You
have
tremendous
__55__!”
The
man
smiled
and
said,
“He
has
cerebral
palsy
(脑瘫).
He
can’t
walk.
”
I
was
dumbstruck
(惊呆的).
It
had
all
seemed
so
happy,
so
__56__,
that
it
never
occurred
to
me
that
the
child
might
be
__57__.
Although
I
didn’t
know
the
man’s
name,
I
told
the
__58__
in
my
newspaper
column.
Either
he
or
someone
he
knew
must
have
recognized
him,
__59__
shortly
afterward,
I
received
this
letter:
Dear
Mrs.
Silverman,
The
energy
I
expended
on
the
hill
that
day
is
__60__
compared
to
what
my

he
is
a
