Lesson 1

1. Structures review: What’s this/that What are these/those
a. Present the flashcards for candy bar, cookies, watermelon, and monkey. Hold up the flashcard for monkey. Model the word for the children and have them repeat it after you.
b. Repeat the procedure for candy bar, watermelon, and cookies.
c. Hold up the flashcard for monkey. Ask, what is this Have the children repeat the question. Elicit the answer, It is a (monkey).
d. Set up the flashcard for watermelon at the far side of the room. Ask, What is that Have the children repeat the question. Elicit the answer, It is a (watermelon).
e. Repeat the procedure using other flashcard for single objects.
f. Now hold up a flashcard for cookies. Ask, What are these Have the children repeat the question. Elicit the answer, they are (cookies). Make sure that the final /s/ is clear.
g. Set up another flashcard for more than one object at far side of the room. Ask, What are those Have the children repeat the question. Elicit the answer, they are (potatoes). .
h. Repeat the procedure using other plurals flashcards.
2. Talk about the story
Student Book pages 62 and 63
Have the children open their books at pages 62 and 63. Display your copy of the pages. Ask these questions about the pictures:
Picture 1: Where are Ann, Ken, and Mocky
What is Mocky wearing
Picture 2/3: What does Mocky find on the shelf
Picture 4: What else does Mocky find
Picture 5: How many are there
Picture 6: Does Mocky like watermelons
Picture 7: Who comes to look
Picture 8/9: How does she feel
What do you think she says
Picture 10: Do you think Ann and Ken will take Mocky there again Why not
Are animals allowed to go into shops Why not
3. Story
Student Book pages 62 and 63
a. Have the children look at the pictures as the tape is played. Say, Now we’re going to hear what the characters said.
b. Play the tape, pausing at each new picture. Have the children repeat the words before you move on to the next picture.
c. Play the tape again, this time without stopping.
d. Replay the tape. Choose four children to role play the actions while the rest of class repeat the dialog.
e. Return to the first picture. Have the children role play the first picture. Explain to the use of please to the class. At the same time you could introduce thank you.
4. Structures review: What’s this Who’s he
Student Book pages 62 and 63
Use the pictures in story to review the questions What’s this What are these Who’s he and Who’s she Ask the children to say each one in turn.
5. Set homework
a. Have the children tell their families about Mocky’s adventure at the supermarket.
b. Ask the children to practice using please and thank you at home.

1. Structures review: What’s this / Is this a (snake) How many are there
a. Hold up the flashcard for snake. Say to the class, “What’s this ” Elicit the answer, “It’s a snake.”
b. Now ask, “Is this a snake ” Elicit the answer, “Yes, it is.”
c. Hold up the same flashcard again. Say, “Is this a frog ” Elicit the answer, “No, it isn’t. It’s a snake.”
d. Repeat the procedure for two other flashcards.
e. Draw three snakes on the board. Stand close to the drawing and say, “Are these snakes ” Elicit the answer, “Yes, they are.”
f. Now point to the snakes and say, “Are these frog ” Elicit the answer, “No, they are. They’re snakes.”
g. Draw other pictures on the board, such as six fish or eight ducks. Repeat the procedure.
2. Listen for words
Student Book page 64
a. Say, “Open your books.” Have the children turn to page 64. Draw their attention to the pictures at the top of the page.
b. Display your copy of the page. Play the tape once. Point to each picture as it is named.
c. Without the tape, point to each picture as you name it. Have the children point to each picture in their books, and say the correct word.
3. Listen to this
Student Book page 64
a. Draw the children’s attention to the pictures and words on the bottom half of the page. Say, “Now we will listen to the sound of the beginning letters of some words.”
b. Play the tape of the first word. Have the children point with their pencils to the first letter of the word as they hear it.
c. Ask them to say the first sound of the word, for example, /s/ snake /s/.
d. Repeat the procedure for all the other words.
e. Play the tape. Have the children check( √ ) the pictures in the order that they hear the words.
4. Read and match
Student Book page 65
a. Have the children open their books at. Draw their attention to the words in the boxes.
b. Display your copy of the page. Have the children name each picture. Point to each word in turn as you read the words aloud to the class.
c. Have the children say the words after you and touch them in their books.
d. Put the children in pairs. Ask them to draw lines connecting each speech bubble to its matching picture. Check to see that all the children do this correctly.
5. Set homework
Finish page 65.

1. Review numbers
Review the number flashcards.
Hold up some of your fingers and ask, “How many are there ” Elicit, “There are (three).”
Change the number of fingers and repeat the procedure for the remaining numbers.
2. Talk together
Student Book page 66
a. Give each child a sheet of paper and ask them to take out their colored pencils.
b. Have each child draw several pictures of one animal or object from the vocabulary, for example: ducks, snakes, flowers.
c. Have the children stand in a circle and hold up their drawings. Ask one child, “Are those (ducks) ” Elicit the answer, “Yes, they are.” Then ask, “How many are there ” Elicit, “There are (six).”
d. Have the children turn to page 66. Display your copy of the page and read the words in the speech bubbles aloud, pointing to each word as you do so.
e. Read the sentences again, and have the children repeat them after you. Encourage the children to touch each word as they say it.
f. Now repeat the procedure with the pictures that below.
3. Listen and number
Student Book page 66
a. Explain that you want them to number each picture according to the sentences on the tape.
b. Play the tape, one sentence at a time. After each sentence, say, “Which picture matches this sentence ” Have the children touch the matching picture.
c. Play the tape again. This time have the children number the picture in the correct order.
4. Write the letter
Student Book page 67
a. Have the children open their books at page 67. Display your copy of the page. Have the children name each picture.
b. Draw their attention to the word under the picture pear. Ask them which letter is missing. Elicit the correct answer from the children.
c. Have the children write the letter p on the line to complete the word.
d. Repeat the procedure with other pictures and words.
5. Set homework

b. Now hold up the flashcard for duck. Ask, “It’s this a fish ” The children should answer, “No, it isn’t. It’s a duck.” Now ask, “Is this a duck ” Elicit, “Yes, it is.”
c. Hold up the flashcard for cookies. Ask, “What are these ” Elicit, “They’re cookies.” Ask, “Are these cabbages ” The children should answer, “No, they’re not. They’re cookies.”
d. Hold up the flashcard for beans. Ask, “What are these ” Elicit, “They’re beans.” Now ask, “What color are these beans ” The children should answer, “They’re green.”
e. Repeat the procedure using the flashcards for tomatoes and carrots.
f. Hold up the flashcard for lemon. Ask, “What color is this lemon ” The children should answer, “It’s yellow.”
g. Repeat the procedure using the flashcards for bear, frog, and snake.
h. Extend the activity and review the remaining color names by pointing to the different classroom objects that the children know the English names for. For example, hold up two red pens. Ask, “What color are these pens ” Elicit, “They’re red.”
i. Repeat the procedure for other groups of objects and for single objects.
2. Read and answer
Student Book pages 68
a. Display your copy of the page and point to the first picture, Say, “I can run.” Have the children repeat the sentence.
b. Say, “I can run. Can you ” Elicit the answer, “Yes, I can.”
c. Point to the second picture and ask, “Can you dance ” Elicit, “Yes, I can/ No, I can’t.”
d. Have the children open their books and say, “Now we can read what we said.”
e. Ask the children read the sentences and check the boxes according to their abilities.
3. Bingo song
a. Write Bingo on the board. Have the children spell out the letters (B-I-N-G-O).
b. Tell the children they are going to learn how to sing Bingo. Play the tape once without stopping, to give the children the idea. Then have them practice the letters and the claps, before playing the song again.
c. Continue until the children are just clapping to the letters.
4. Let’s sing
Play the tape again. Have the children join in and clap their hands in time.
5. Set homework
Student Book page 68
a. Read the numbers in the picture
b. Draw lines connecting the numbers one through ten, in the correct order.
c. Color the picture.

1. Flashcard game
a. Divide the class into two teams. Put all the flashcards face down on a table between the teams. (These are the flashcards for the vocabulary listed on page 142.)
b. Have a child in Team A pick up a card and show it to Team B. (The children should take turns picking up the cards.) The child should ask, “Are these (cookies) / Is this a (banana) ” or “What’s this / What are these ”
c. Together, Team B must answer “They’re (cookies).” Or “ It’s a (banana).”
d. Points are scored for every correct question and correct answer.
2. Snap!
This game reviews the vocabulary and letters introduced in Units 7 through 10. It is best played in pairs.
a. Ask the children to take out their small flashcards for Unit 7 to Unit 10.
b. See Unit1, page 24, for the rules and procedure.
3. Bingo
Use this game to review some of the vocabulary of this book.
Tell children to take out their student cards for Units 7-12 and get ready for the game.
4. Self-assessment
a. In activity 1, tell the children that there are two numbers before each name, but only one is correct. Tell them to look at the picture carefully then check the correct number. Have them work in pairs to finish all the pictures.
b. In activity two, draw their attention to the picture of peach. Point to the question next to the picture. Elicit the correct answer from the children. Tell them to write the word down to complete the answer. Repeat with the other pictures.
5. Vocabulary Test
a. Use 12 of the flashcards from the vocabulary listed on this page. Hold up each card in turn and elicit the correct words from the children.
b. Show each card, one at a time, and ask, “What is this ” The children should respond with the names of the picture.
c. Record each student’s score out 12.
6. Listening Test
Student Book page 71
Children will listen to a sentence, and then identify a picture that matches the sentence.
a. Say, “Point to the three pictures at the top of your page. Now listen to the tape.”
b. Play the first sentence on the tape. Say, “Now check ( √ ) the picture that matches the sentence.
c. Continue for the other five listening tasks.
7. Reading Test
Student Book page 72
Children will read the sentence, look at the picture, and then identify the correct word or words.
a. Point to the first reading task. Say, “Read the words and look at the picture.”
b. Point to the boxes. Say, “Only one box is correct.” Explain that the children must choose the correct box.
c. Repeat the procedure for the other five tasks.
8. Sounds and Letters Test
Student Book page 73
Children will listen to the words that represent the pictures. They identify and check ( √ ) the beginning letter of that word.

1. Vocabulary Test
Use 10 of the flashcards from the vocabulary learned in this book. Hold up each card in turn and elicit the correct words from the children.
Show each card, one at a time, and ask, “What is this ” the children should respond with the names of the pictures.
Record each student’s score out of 10.
2. Listening Test
Play the tape, have the children check the picture that matches the sentences.
Check your work with your partner.
3. Reading Test
Children will read the sentence, look at the picture, and identify the correct word or words.
Point to the first reading task. Say, “Read the words and look at the picture.”
Point to the boxes. Say, “Only one box is correct.” Explain that the children must choose the correct box.
Repeat the procedure for the other five tasks.
4. Sounds and letters Test
Children will listen to the words that represent the pictures. They identify and check (√) the beginning letter of that word.
Listen to the tape and then check your answer.
5. Set homework
Finish the exercise in the activity book.
