Once upon a time, there was a man who was so famous that everyone in his country knew him.
One day, the famous man was sitting in a restaurant with his sister. “It must be great to be famous. Everyone tries to please you, and you can do whatever you want to,” said his sister. “It’s quite the opposite sometimes, in fact. Because I’m famous, I can’t do what I want to,” he denied. “But look, we’re sitting at the best table and eating the best food. We couldn’t sit here and eat this if you weren’t famous,” said his sister. “I’ll show you what I mean,” said he.
The next day, the famous man picked up his sister and took her to another country. “I’m not at all famous here,” he said. “Let’s see how we get on.” Soon they found a restaurant, but it was very busy, so they had to queue. “This wouldn’t have happened if you were famous,” said his sister, but the famous man just smiled.
When they finally got a table, it took the waiter years to bring what they ordered. And the food supposed to be hot was cold, and the food supposed to be cold was hot! Eventually, the famous man couldn’t stand any more and asked to see the manager. “This food is awful. We had to wait an hour for a seat, and the service is also very poor. Look, even my spoon is dirty!”
Showing his horribly yellow teeth, the manager, smiling, said, “Well, that’s just bad luck for you.”

Women have jumped ahead of men for the first time in using the Internet to do their holiday shopping, according to a study published last week in the US.
For years men had been more likely to shop on the Internet than women, but during the 2004 holiday season 58 percent of those making online purchases were women.
“It shows the Internet is becoming the mainstream(主流),” said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project group, which carried out the study.
Rainie said it was only a matter of time before women shoppers caught up with men. This is because women traditionally make decisions about spending.
Users were more likely to shop online to save time. Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 were responsible for some of the most dramatic (显著的) increases in the online gift-buying population this time around.
However, three quarters of US Internet users did not buy holiday gifts online in 2004. They worried about credit card security, or just compared online prices with off-line prices, and then dashed off to the shops to get the best deals.
“But even if shoppers don’t buy things online, websites are becoming promotion tools for stores,” said Dan Hess, vice president of ComScore Networks Inc. Hess said that most stores’ websites can make customers fully believe the security of their credit card numbers, and most are able to ensure that gifts arrive on time.
“It’s all about making shopping more efficient, more reliable and more comfortable,” Hess said.
60. From the passage, we can infer that ____.
A. men usually decide how to spend money in the family

C. Shopping off-line provides better service.
D. Young people like to shop for gifts online.
63. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Women Turn to Online Shopping B. Men Turn to Online Shopping
C. Women Often Go on the Internet D. Men Often Go on the Internet

People who are hit by lightning and survive often suffer long-term effects. These may include memory loss, sleep disorders (混乱), muscle pain and depression.
Experts tell people to seek the safety of a building or a hard-top vehicle any time they hear thunder, even if it is not raining. They say lightning can strike as far as sixteen kilometers from any rainfall. At least ten percent of lightning happens without any visible clouds overhead.
People who are outside should make sure they are not the tallest around. Bend low to the ground, but do not lie down. Do not stand under a tree. Get away from water and anything made of metal. A car is safe, but do not touch any metal inside.
Safety experts say people in buildings should stay away from anything with wires or pipes that lead to the outside. The National Weather Service says if you plan to disconnect any electronic equipment, do so before the storm arrives. Do not use a wired telephone. Do not use water. All these can carry electricity.
Some people think a person struck by lightning carries an electrical charge (电荷) afterward. Experts say this is not true. It is safe to do emergency treatment.
Each year, about four hundred people in the United States are struck by lightning. On average, about seventy people die per year. The National Weather Service says that is more than the number of people killed by severe storms.
64. According to the passage, we should ________ when there is lightning.
A. lie down on the ground B. stay in a car
C. swim in the river D. disconnect the electric fan
65. We learn from the passage that ________.
A. you should turn off all electronic equipment before the storm arrives
B. a wired telephone isn’t safe to use on rainy days
C. a person struck by lightning carries an electrical charge afterward
D. severe storms kill more people than lightning does
66. The underlined word “depression” probably means “_______”.
A. excitement B. forgetfulness
C. silence D. sadness
67. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. where people should go in case of lightning
B. common tips for lightning safety
C. how lightning travels
D. a report written by the National Weather Service

Your mobile phone rings and instead of the usual electronic signals, it’s playing your favourite music — A friend sends you your favourite song to cheer you up. One day, a record company might forward (转寄) new records and music videos to your phone.
The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in exciting ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phones — all devices that blend phones, stereos(立体声), video players and Internet browsers (浏览器) into one.
Music fans will pass music or songs along to friends using a kind of musical trading card. “Unlike Internet downloads, mobile downloads would be easy for record companies to control,” said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of the company Yourmobile, based in Santa Monica, California.
“If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged,” said Simon. “It’s like going through a toll gate (收费站). There’s more possibility for copyright control than there is on the Internet.”
Massachusetts-based Converse is offering service in Portugal and the Netherlands that lets people record tunes in their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. Someday, people might be able to sing songs by themselves and pass them along. The company is sure that people will want to use music to reach out and keep in touch with someone.
“A mobile phone is not a listening machine, and you’ll be disappointed if you think you can change it into a radio,” said Ouzel, a creative manager for Converse in Israel. “But if someone sends you a song while you’re on vacation, you will appreciate the feeling.”
68. The underlined word “blend” in the second paragraph most probably means “____”.
A. send B. come C. mix D. compare
69. “Massachusetts-based Converse” in the fifth paragraph probably refers to ____.
A. a person B. a city in Israel
C. a state of the USA D. a company
70. What do record companies think about the idea of passing songs and music through mobile phones
A. They are worried about it. B. They are very interested in it.
C. They try hard to stop it. D. They take no notice of it.
第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小題 每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。
Should students wear uniforms in public schools Different people have different opinions. Several people were interviewed by a newspaper reporter.
Flora: A dress code enforces discipline and keeps students focused on learning. The way students are dressed influences how they act. With fewer fashion distractions (使人分心的事), schools become better places for teaching and learning. This leads to an improvement in grades because it makes it easier to focus on studying when everyone is dressed in the same way. In addition, students’ attendance is improved because they don’t need to choose which clothes to wear every morning.
Jeff: Schools that require uniforms will see a decrease in violence. Without the pressure of competing with different styles, students are more relaxed in school. They feel more equal, and don’t fight as much. Uniforms will also make it harder for students to carry weapons. They will be harder to hide when all the students are dressed in the same way, therefore fewer weapons will be brought to school.
Michael: Parents can benefit when schools require uniforms. The expenses on their children’s clothes are lower. A parent of a teen that attends a public school spends over $500 a year on average clothes, while a parent of a teen who must wear a uniform spends less than $200 a year. The fewer clothes parents have to buy, the less money they have to spend.
Jennifer: Uniforms make students and their school unique. Students will stand out in school activities, and have a stronger sense of belonging. A bond will then form between the school and the students, and unite them as a whole. The feeling will increase students’ self-esteem.
Christopher: I suppose that one of the main disadvantages of wearing uniforms is that students easily outgrow them because they are growing very fast.
Jessica: School uniforms suppress(抑制) students’ individuality in some ways. They give students less chance to show themselves. They all look the same when they wear uniforms. As we all know, clothes show what kind of person you are and influence the way you feel.

书面表达
One possible version:
Recently there has been a heated debate about whether high school students should have mobile phones in school. The majority of students think that it is more convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and classmates if they have a mobile phone. And what’s more, it’s a fashion.
However, most teachers think that middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. It is a waste of time for students to play games and send messages to each other by mobile phone. Also it causes the students to vie with each other. If necessary, they can make phone calls by using public phones on campus.
In my opinion, following the fashion is understandable. But as high school students, we should put our energy into our studies.
