Lesson Plan Module4 Unite 1 Reading Advertisement
Teaching Objectives:
1、 Ss will be able to identify the differences and similarities between commercial advertisements and pubic service advertisements, arousing their awareness of ads’ tricks by reading this expository writing.
2、 Ss will be able to use those advertising-related expressions to talk about their opinions on ads and give supporting reasons through exemplification.
3、 Ss will be able to read expository writing more effectively through the strategy of identifying the introduction of subject, the supporting details as well as the conclusion in the expository writing.
Teaching Procedure: (45 mins)
I. Lead-in (8’)
1、Show Ss a public service video about guarding against AIDS, which is named Love under the Sun. Q1: What can you learn from this public service video
2、Show Ss two pictures selected from the video, love under the sun and live and let live.
3、Show Ss the well-known public service advertisement Project Hope, starting a talk about ads. Q2: How do you feel when you see the child in the big eye Q3: From this advertisement, what do you think the purpose of Project Hope
4、Show Ss another two famous and successful commercial advertisements, and both have their own slogans. One advertises products, Q4: What does this advertisement try to sell , the other advertises service. Q5: What are advertised in this advertisement Q6: Do these ads make you want to buy a product or service And why
5、The activity of brainstorming: Ss think of as many as adjectives to describe the characteristics of ads. Q7: What impresses you most in the ads
6、Teacher concludes the main characteristics of ads, eliciting Ss from the article about Ads.
II. Presentation (20’)
1、 Ss go through the article as quickly as possible and find out answers to the following questions: Q1: What are the two main types of advertisements Q2: How many problems does this research deal with And what are they
2、Detailed reading: Use a chart to help Ss analyze what an advertisement is, and ask them to read this part together and try to find out what a commercial advertisement is and what a public service advertisement is.

6、Reading strategy: According to the basic format of an expository writing: introduction of subject, supporting details and conclusion, Ss are asked to identify the basic format in this article, enhancing Ss’ comprehension of the whole article.

Debating (13’)
13、Organize Ss into two groups. Tell them that they are going to have a debate on whether advertising plays a positive role or negative role in our daily life. One group thinks that advertising plays a positive role while the other holds the negative role. Ss in the same group list the reasons and find supporting examples for the debate. Teacher will give Ss some tips.
Write their reasons and examples on the blackboard. The group that comes up with the most reasons and supporting examples wins the debate.
III. Conclusion (4’).
14、Teacher evaluates students’ performance, making comments, correcting major mistakes; teacher also emphasizes the focused teaching items.
15、Teacher assigns homework: Ss are required to search the Internet to get more information about the ads and China’s public service advertising campaign, and design an advertisement for something they are interested in.
