How to do cloze tests

Objectives:
By the end of the session, most students will be better able to do the cloze tests. This will be achieved by:
a) Knowing more information about the cloze tests: the requirements of cloze test in senior high school entrance exam; the characteristics and the forms of cloze tests.
b) Reviewing and learning the tips of doing cloze tests.
Reviewing and learning the steps of doing cloze tests.
c) Practicing the passages by using the tips and steps we learned.
By the end of the session, most students will be better able to use the tips and steps, and improve their abilities of doing the cloze tests.
Teaching and learning focus:
1.Reviewing and learning the steps of doing cloze tests.
2. Reviewing and learning the tips of doing cloze tests.
3.Practicing the cloze tests .
Anticipated difficulties:
Students may feel it difficult to use the right tips of doing cloze tests.
Solutions:
a)Helping students understand how to do the cloze tests correctly.
b)Presenting the tips through the examples
c)Practicing the cloze tests
Teaching aids: PPT, slide projector, exercise sheet
Teaching and learning procedures :
Step1.Warming up (3 minutes)
T: Hello, I’m very glad to see you. Do you enjoy the song They are the words of the song , but some information is missing , Could you help me fill in the words
Let Ss do a cloze test about the song.
T:Thank you. This kind of exercises , we called it “cloze”. What is the cloze Do you know
T+Ss: It’s a kind of reading . …
T: In our tests ,it’s very importation for us to do cloze. Do you think so
(Aims: 通过熟悉的旋律,活跃了英语课堂气氛,同时歌词和师生之间的自由谈话不光拉近了师生之间的关系,而且也是直接了当地引出了复习完形填空。)
Step2.Explanation and presentation (15 minutes)
Show students the characteristics and the forms of cloze test according to the senior high school entrance exams in the latest years. Let Ss read it and explain.
Review and learn five tips of doing cloze tests, and let Ss do similar exercises in time according to the tips. While explaining each answer, ask Ss to answer the three questions :
1. What’s the answer
2. How do you do it
3. What tip do you use
Review and learn three steps of doing cloze tests.
(Aims: 解读温州中考完形填空特点,使学生对完形填空有较好的感性认识,并为下文做题带来准备。指导学生做完形填空的方法,帮助学生更清楚地掌握并为运用到篇章做好铺垫并总结常见的技巧,给予及时的中考练习跟踪。)
Step 3.Practice (15 minutes)
Ask Ss to do the cloze test (2008 温州) by three steps and the above tips, then explain the answers one by one. Step1: Ask Ss to answer two questions. 1. What’s the material(体裁). 2. Find out (when, who, where). Step 2: Ask Ss to read the cloze carefully and make the answers. While explaining each answer, ask Ss to answer the three questions:
1.What’s the answer 2.How do you do it 3.What tip do you use
Step 3. Re-read and check. Let Ss know how to check the answers.
Sum up: How to do cloze (the tips and the steps).
(Aims: 选用2008 温州中考完形填空作为练习和专题讲解,让学生运用以上的步骤和tips 做题,这样有利于把握学生的复习方向以及复习难度。)
Step 4.Consolidation (12 minutes)
1. Explain the guide to making the cloze.
2. Ask the students in groups to try to make a cloze according to the tips.
3.Show two or three groups’ work and let them say the reasons out.
(Aims: 此环节作为提升教学的工作。该任务有一定的难度,但同时也能让学生学会分析完形填空的设计,提高了学生解题的准确性,加快了做题速度。)
Homework
1. Finish off making the cloze .
2. Finish of cloze test (复习导引p78-79, passage 1,2)
(Aims: 给学生有针对性的练习,是为了对课堂所学知识的巩固和运用,也是课堂的延伸。)
