Valentine’s
Day
is
one
of
those
rare
holidays
that
is
enjoyed
by
almost
everyone
in
the
world.After
all,loved
ones
get
to
shower
each
other
with
cards,flowers,chocolates,and
jewelry.This
display
of
affection
does
come
at
a
steep
price—Almost
$19
billion,and
that
number
is
just
for
the
US.
So
how
did
this
extravagant
holiday
begin?While
there
are
numerous
legends,the
most
popular
one
dates
back
to
270
AD.According
to
the
folklore,Emperor
Claudius
Ⅱ,the
ruler
of
the
Roman
Empire
did
not
approve
of
young
men
getting
married
before
heading
to
war.He
believed
that
single
men
made
better
soldiers
because
they
were
less
distracted.
But
a
Roman
clergyman
named
Valentine
did
not
agree
and
helped
many
couples
get
married
secretly.When
the
Emperor
found
out,he
sentenced
the
Bishop
to
death.While
in
prison,Valentine
fell
in
love
with
the
jailor’s
daughter
and
just
before
he
was
executed
on
February
14,sent
her
a
note
signed—“From
Your
Valentine.”
In
496
AD
Pope
Gelasius
set
aside
the
day
to
honor
St.Valentine
and
a
fun
tradition
was
born!
The
Pope,of
course,was
not
the
one
who
transformed
it
into
a
commercial
holiday.That
credit
goes
to
Richard
Cadbury,a
member
of
the
famous
British
chocolate
company,and
Massachusetts
businesswoman
Esther
Howland.The
former
came
up
with
the
brilliant
idea
of
selling
bite-sized
chocolates
packaged
in
heart-shaped
boxes
while
Howland
popularized
handmade
lace
paper
Valentine
cards
that
featured
messages
of
love.
Candy
and
cards
remain
the
biggest
Valentine’s
Day
gifts
till
this
day.Americans
spend
over
$1
billion
USD
on
chocolate—most
encased
inside
the
35
million
heart-shaped
boxes
that
are
sold
each
year.With
over
145
million
cards
exchanged
in
the
US
and
over
a
billion
worldwide,Valentine’s
Day
is
one
of
the
biggest
moneymakers
for
greeting
card
companies.
Flowers
are
also
very
popular.About
51%
of
people,primarily
men
buy
red
roses
for
their
loved
ones.At
inflated
prices,this
adds
up
to
$1.9
billion
USD!Almost
35%
of
Americans
that
celebrate
the
holiday
treat
their
loved
ones
to
a
special
meal.This
“splurge”
costs
an
astounding
$3.6
billion
USD.
The
romantic
day
is
of
course
a
favorite
for
wedding
proposals.It
is
therefore
not
surprising
to
hear
that
about
$4
billion
USD
is
spent
on
gold,silver
and
diamond
jewelry
each
year.Humans
are
not
the
only
ones
that
get
showered
with
love.One
in
five
Americans
also
include
pets
in
their
celebration,dropping
a
cool
$703
million
USD!

Recently

survey
in
some
big

in
China
among
the
pedestrians
on
the
correct
spelling
of
some
most
commonly
used
Chinese
characters,
the
result
of
which
was
completely
beyond
their
expectations.
The
expression
they
used
was
“embarrass”,
which
is
pronounced
in
Chinese
“ganga.”
First,
they
asked
eight
students
from
Grades
4
to
6
in
a
famous
primary
school
in
Beijing,
and
half
of
them
could
write
them
correctly.
Later
they
came
to
a
secondary
school
and
asked
eight
students
to
do
the
same
thing,
but
this
time
only
three
of
whom
wrote
the
two
characters
correctly.
What’s
more
surprising
was
that
they
asked
five
persons
who
had
got
master’s
or
doctor’s
degrees
to
write
the
same
characters,
but
only
two
of
them
could

The
result
was
not

terrific
but
ironic
as
well.
Is
it

Absolutely
not!

This
day
will
be
remembered
in
American
history,wrote
John
Adams
in
1776.People
will
honor
it
with
fireworks
and
celebrations.He
was
talking
about
the
second
of
July.That
is
the
day
that
America
got
independence
from
the
British.But
the
date
written
on
the
Declaration
of
Independence
is
July
4.So,since
1776,Americans
have
honored
July
4
as
the
country’s
Independence
Day.
Several
early
U.S.presidents
died
on
July
4.They
include
John
Adams,who
became
the
second
U.S.president,even
though
he
made
a
mistake
about
the
country’s
most
important
national
holiday.John
Adams
and
Thomas
Jefferson,the
country’s
third
president,both
died
on
the
country’s
50th
anniversary
of
Independence
Day.James
Monroe,the
country’s
fifth
president,died
on
July
4,1831.
Most
Americans
celebrate
Independence
Day
with
barbecues(烧烤晚会),parades
and
fireworks.But
a
few
celebrate
by
eating
all
the
hot
dogs
they
can.In
1970,a
restaurant
called
Nathan’s
Famous
has
hosted
a
competition
to
see
who
can
eat
the
most
hot
dogs
in
a
short
time.The
event
is
now
shown
on
major
sports
channels.It
includes
a
women’s
contest
and
a
men’s
contest.Both
are
held
in
New
York
City.For
the
last
eight
years,a
man
named
Joey
Chestnut
has
won
the
men’s
contest.In
2014,he
ate
61
hot
dogs
in
10
minutes.The
2014
women’s
winner,Miki
Sudo,ate
34
hot
dogs.
Let’s
go
back
to
those
fireworks,probably
the
most
common
image
related
to
Independence
Day.Americans
really
love
fireworks.Americans
spent
$675
million
on
fireworks
last
year.Most
ordinary
people
buy
about
$100
worth.Cities
and
towns
spend
between
$5,000
and
$30,000
to
put
on
a
public
show.The
biggest
fireworks
show
is
in
New
York
City.It
costs
about
$2
million.

The
power
of
the
right
words
can
make
the
difference
between
moving
forward
to
accomplishments
or
the
realization
of
a
dream,or
staying
stuck
where
you
are,or
casting
oneself
in
the
role
of
failure.One
thing
is
for
certain,though.If
you
always
see
yourself
as
a
failure,you
are
more
likely
than
not
to
be
just
that.The
power
of
how
you
visualize
the
world
is
directly
connected
to
how
you
see
yourself
and
how
you
speak.If
you
see
the
world
full
of
problems,obstacles(障碍)
or
roadblocks
to
change
yourself,start
to
learn
new
skills
or
to
begin
the
adventure
of
being
your
own
boss
in
your
own
business,you
already
have
allowed
defeatism
to
enter
the
equation.In
essence,you
have
set
yourself
up
to
fail
before
you
have
even
started.
For
example,if
you
use
the
words
“I
probably
will
not
make
enough
money
to
make
a
living”,you
already
has
a
failure
element
built
into
this
perception,whereas
the
words
“I
will,perhaps,make
enough
money
to
make
a
living”,give
potential
a
fair
opportunity
to
live
on.
A
few
months
ago,I
was
visiting
a
couple
that
I
have
known
for
years.After
exchanging
the
usual
pleasantries,they
began
to
tell
me
about
a
home
business
they
were
going
to
start.It
had
to
do
with
catering
meals
to
local
special
events,old
age
homes,and
small
office
functions
like
birthdays,or
promotions.The
husband
said
that
they
might
make
enough
money
to
cover
their
costs
while
the
wife
said
they
were
going
to
be
able
to
make
enough
money
to
expand
their
business
to
their
own
commercial
establishment.
In
fact,in
just
a
couple
of
weeks,they
had
started
to
secure
a
couple
of
clients.From
what
I
could
tell,they
appeared
to
have
a
great
idea,and
had
at
least
started
when
others
would
have
simply
talked
about
it.It
seemed
they
were
off
and
running.
In
the
last
couple
of
weeks,I
dropped
in
on
them
again
to
see
how
they
were
doing
with
their
new
catering
business.As
soon
as
I
walked
in,I
felt
a
sense
that
something
was
wrong.I
asked
them
if
something
had
happened.
The
first
to
speak
was
the
husband
who
bluntly
and
concisely
told
me
that
they
stopped
their
catering
business.He
turned
and
looked
directly
at
his
wife
and
said,“I
told
you
we
had
to
go
slow,but
you
wouldn’t
listen.Now
we
have
been
left
with
a
lot
of
kitchen
utensils
and
equipment
that
we
don’t
need
and
paid
for
out
of
our
own
pockets.”
The
wife
looked
at
me
seemingly
hesitant
to
respond
but
did
so
after
I
asked
her
exactly
what
happened.She
reluctantly
told
me
that
they
had
been
doing
quite
well
and
had
several
new
clients.But,they
had
received
a
visit
in
their
home
by
an
inspector
from
the
local
health
authority
that
wanted
to
ensure
that
their
kitchen
preparation
area
was
up
to
code.It
wasn’t.So,they
were
told
that
unless
they
had
a
proper
food
preparation
area,they
must
cease
operations.
Unfortunately,the
defeatism
attitude
of
the
husband
ruled
the
day.It
was
all
about
blame,and
“I
told
you
so”
rather
than
about
how
to
find
a
solution
to
this
obstacle.It
is
a
situation
where
one
person
had
started
with
an
“I
doubt
it”
attitude
and
where
another
started
with
a
“We
can”
attitude.Without
both
parties
being
on
the
same
page,there
was
little
hope
that
a
solution
would
be
found,or,even
explored.
How
big
a
role
did
selected
words
have
in
defeating
this
new
business
venture?I
would
have
to
say
a
great
deal.Words
are
powerhouses
of
feelings,attitudes
and
reflect
what
you
believe.If
you
want
to
succeed
in
absolutely
anything,choose
your
words
correctly,believe
what
they
mean,and
live
up
to
these
words
daily.

Students
perform
better
when
their
instructors
use
hand
gestures—a
simple
teaching
tool
that
could
generate
benefits
in
higher-level
math
such
as
algebra(代数).
A
study
published
in
Child
Development,the
top-ranked
educational
psychology
journal,provides
some
of
the
strongest
evidence
yet
that
gesturing
may
have
a
unique
effect
on
learning.Teachers
in
the
United
States
tend
to
use
gestures
less
than
teachers
in
other
countries.
“Gesturing
can
be
a
very
beneficial
tool
that
is
completely
free
and
easily
employed
in
classrooms,”
said
Kimberly
Fenn,study
co-author
and
assistant
professor
of
psychology
at
Michigan
State
University.“And
I
think
it
can
have
long-lasting
effects.”
Fenn
and
Ryan
Duffy
of
MSU
and
Susan
Cook
of
the
University
of
Iowa
conducted
an
experiment
with
184
second-,third-
and
fourth-graders
in
Michigan
elementary
classrooms.
Half
of
the
students
were
shown
videos
of
an
instructor
teaching
math
problems
using
only
speech.The
others
were
shown
videos
of
the
instructor
teaching
the
same
problems
using
both
speech
and
gestures.In
the
speech-only
videos,the
instructor
simply
explains
the
problem.In
the
other
videos,the
instructor
uses
two
hand
gestures
while
speaking,using
different
hands
to
refer
to
the
two
sides
of
the
equation.Students
who
learned
from
the
gesture
videos
performed
better
on
a
test
given
immediately
afterward
than
those
who
learned
from
the
speech-only
video.
Another
test
was
given
24
hours
later,and
the
gesture
students
actually
showed
improvement
in
their
performance
while
the
speech-only
students
did
not.
While
previous
research
has
shown
the
benefits
of
gestures
in
a
one-on-one
tutoring-style
environment,the
new
study
is
the
first
to
test
the
role
of
gestures
in
equivalence
learning
in
a
regular
classroom.
The
study
also
is
the
first
to
show
that
gestures
can
help
students
transfer
learning
to
new
contexts—such
as
transferring
the
knowledge
learned
in
an
addition-based
equation
to
a
multiplication-based
equation.
Fenn
noted
that
U.S.students
lag
behind
those
in
many
other
Western
countries
in
math
and
have
a
particularly
hard
time
mastering
equivalence
problems
in
early
grades.“So
if
we
can
help
them
grasp
this
foundational
knowledge
earlier,”
she
said,“it
will
help
them
as
they
learn
algebra
and
higher
levels
of
mathematics.”
