This is an important unit in the book of Grade two. The grammar focus, First conditional if clause, enables the students to talk about consequences in daily life. And the modal verb should could also be used to give advice.

Most eighth graders have enough vocabulary and grammar knowledge. They want to use the language to do something with their life. Especially the grammar focus in this unit is related to their daily life, so it can arouse the students’ interest in learning English and improve their English ability.

Ⅰ.Leading in
First I will show the students some pictures of Harvard University and its famous mottoes(校训).After reading them, I will inspire the students that if they want to Harvard University. What should they do? Students will use the pattern We should…
Ⅱ.Observing of the target language
First the meaning. students will be asked to observe the mottoes and then choose the right meaning of the target language.
We use If I…, I will… to talk about
things that are happening now
things that happened before
things that are possible in the future
Then the structure. I will ask Ss to observe the mottoes again and ask them to choose the right form.

Purpose: In this part, the Ss will get to know and summarize when and how they use the First conditional if clause.
Ⅲ. Practicing of the target language
After they summarized the meaning and form, I think it’s time for them to have some practice. This part includes three activities. The first practice is a wholly-controlled one. The second is a semi-controlled. And the third is also semi-controlled, but only more difficult.
Wholly-controlled practice— A match
I will first give them two parts of sentences. Students will match them in meaning and then add if to make a complete motto. The verbs should be in the right form.
Semi-controlled practice--- Activity 1
Now Ss are pretty clear of the structure of the target language and I think it’s time for them to have more practice.
This activity has two steps, First I will create a situation for my Ss. Ss will be invited to my party. One of them Mary has a plan for it. I will show Mary’s ideas of the plan. As you can it, Ss will be asked to complete the sentences by using the target language with the help of these hints.
The second step is a pair work, Ss will make their own plan similar to Mary’s. And then they will talk to each other using the target language. As you can see it here.
Activity 2
Activity 2 is also a semi-controlled activity ,but its more difficult . There are also two steps.
Step 1. Demonstration
I will give students a magic ball as a prize . With this magic ball, students will tell about their future. I will have two piles of paper on my desk, one is for the If….parts, and the other the result part. I will ask two Ss to the front and pick sentences from different parts. They will complete a whole sentence using the if clause. That is about their future. For example…
In the next step, Ss will work in groups of four. I will give each group my two piles of paper. And each Ss will take turns to do as the two students did just now. While one is reading the sentence, the other three Ss take notes and write it down. In the end, I will ask one of them to report what other members have got.
Through this activity, Ss will practice the if clause with the first person and the third person.
Now I think its time that Ss start using the target language.
Ⅳ.Using of the target language
I will create another situation. My friend Bailey sent me an email with her problem in it.
First I will ask my Ss to read the email and find out her problem and then think of some good advice to give her.
Then they will write down the advice and explain why. Ss will be suggested to use the modal verb should and the first conditional if clause while writing the reply. Some Ss will read their reply out.
With this comprehensive activity, Ss are able to give advice and reasons to help others by using the target language.
