A simple flower made headlines in the British press last week. How could that be?
British Prime Minister David Cameron and his ministers were attending a reception hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They insisted on wearing poppies (罂粟花) in their buttonholes.【版权所有:21教育】
What's wrong with that?
According to the Global Times, Chinese officials apparently had asked the UK delegation not to wear poppies. The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.
So what's the significance of the poppy? It's a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people.
From the Chinese point of view, the poppy is a symbol of China's humiliation at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars of the 19th century. Britain forced China to open the borders to trade — including in the opium — which was made from poppies grown in India.
Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World War Ⅰ. Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried. Since then, Poppy Day (November 11) has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.
So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons. And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other's standpoint.
Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny. And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guest from overseas. US President Barack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain's Queen — a dull person with no interest in music. Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies. But they were in US format and impossible to play on British DVD players.
Many countries have diplomats stationed overseas. Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home. However, sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook the cultural significance of a small flower.

Trusting in the Kindness of Strangers
While driving from my home on the long way to work, I noticed a car in front of me had a wobbly (摇摆的) wheel. It was clear the wheel had been changed recently and had not been fixed correctly. On a slow road this would not present much of a problem, but I knew the route and knew a motorway (高速公路) was coming soon where the traffic would move much faster and would be very dangerous as the wheel could come off at that speed.
I was driving a large jeep at the time and the car in front was a small to midsized car driven by a lady on her own. So as I tried to flash my lights and wave her to pull over I was worried that looking in her mirror she would see a lone man chase her down in a jeep waving frantically for her to pull over on this side road.
Thankfully she trusted more in the good nature of people and pulled over where I could explain the problem. She confirmed the wheel was changed only the night before and said she would pull in to the next garage before the motorway where they would have the tools to fix the wheel correctly.
My belief is that the act of kindness was hers and not mine. How so? Well, it was her who chose to trust in the possibility that people are good over the belief that bad things come from being waved down to the side of the road by strangers. I do preach (宣扬) caution and would have hesitated myself to pull over to the side should a stranger in a car wave me down.
I will never know, thankfully, if the wheel may have come off and caused a serious accident but it was risky and at the very least might have caused damage to her car, so for that I am glad I was able to wave her down. But I am more glad she trusted in a stranger.

There are many customs and traditions connected to yearly celebrations which are part of Britain's folklore (民俗). Lughnasadh is a celebration at the beginning of August. A custom connected with it is to make corn dolls with corn from the last of the harvest. The doll is saved until the following spring when it is put back into the earth with new seeds. People believe that the doll contains the spirit of the corn and will bring a good harvest. Christmas is also full of ancient customs. The traditions of lighting a fire and decorating the home with an evergreen have their roots in times long before Christianity. The fire is to keep away evil spirits and fill the home with light and the evergreen is valued because it is a sign that life continued during those cold, dark days.21·世纪*教育网
Not all the origins of ancient traditions are remembered, however. The roots of Morris dancing, for example, are not known. This is a dance in which men (and sometimes women) dressed in white dance together. Some people think the dance may be from preChristmas times, and others say it was introduced into Britain in the late 15th century and that it comes from Moorish dancing. In any case, it is interesting to see that Morris dancing is not a dying tradition. There are Morris dancing groups in places as far away as New Zealand and San Francisco!
Although these customs have been passed down to us from forgotten generations, they themselves have not been forgotten and continue to play a part in our modern lives. Every week groups of individuals regularly meet to sing, play instruments or practice ancient dances and this month people all over Britain shall be preparing their homes for the ancient celebration we now call Christmas, lighting fires and putting up Christian trees, just as their greatgreatgrandfathers once did.

Although it might have happened anywhere, my encounter with the green banana started on a steep mountain road in the central area of Brazil.I was driving up through beautiful countryside when the radiator(水箱)began to leak. I stopped at the next village, which consisted of a small store and a few houses. People came over to look.“That's easy to fix,” a man said. He sent a boy running for some green bananas. He patted me on the shoulder, assuring me that everything would work out. “Green bananas,” he smiled. Everyone agreed.21教育网
We chatted casually while all the time I was wondering what they could possibly do to my radiator with their green bananas. I did not ask them, though, as that would show my ignorance, so I talked about the beauty of the land that lay before our eyes. Huge rock formations, like Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, rose up all around us. “Do you see that tall one right over there?” asked the man, pointing to a particularly tall, slender pinnacle(尖端)of dark rock. “That rock marks the center of the world.”
I looked to see if he was teasing me, but his face was serious. He, in turn, inspected me carefully, as if to make sure I grasped the significance of his statement. The occasion called for some show of recognition on my part. “The center of the world?”I repeated, trying to show interest. He nodded. “The absolute center. Everyone around here knows it.”
At that moment the boy returned with an armful of green bananas. The man cut one in half and pressed the cut end against the radiator jacket. The banana melted into a glue against the hot metal, stopping the leaks instantly. I was so astonished at this that I must have looked rather foolish and everyone laughed. They then refilled my radiator and gave me extra bananas to take along. An hour later, after using the green banana once more, my radiator and I reached our destination.
It took me a little longer to fully grasp the importance of the rock which the villagers believed marked the center of the world. I had at first doubted their claim, as I knew for a fact that the center was located somewhere else in New England. After all, my grandfather had come from there. But gradually I realized the village people had a very reasonable belief and I agreed with them. We all tend to regard as the center that special place where we are known, where we know others, where things mean much to us, and where we ourselves have both identity and meaning: family, school, town and local region could all be our center of the world.
The lesson which gradually dawned on me was actually very simple. Every place has special meanings for the people in it, and in a certain sense every place represents the center of the world. The world has numerous such centers, and no one student or traveler can experience all of them. But once a conscious breakthrough to a second center is made, a lifelong perspective and collection can begin.21*cnjy*com
The cultures of the world are full of unexpected green bananas with special value and meaning. They have been there for ages, ripening slowly, perhaps waiting patiently for people to come along to encounter them. In fact, a green banana is waiting for all of us if we would leave our own centers of the world in order to experience other places.

In June, English teacher Perry started a cycle ride from North America to South America to raise money for “Help for Heroes”. He expects the trip to take about a year, and he'll be going alone.
“It will add to the sense of adventure!” Perry says. “By far my biggest fear is failure, but I regard that as a motivation(动力). I will cycle most days and take breaks. I plan to visit organizations for helping poor people along my route. On this trip, I've set myself a goal of raising at least £2,500 for ‘Help for Heroes’, which is a charity for servicemen and servicewomen who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts. Preparation for the trip takes most of my spare time. I practice cycling and running every day. I must have written over 1,000 letters — raising money is a real problem. I've also read every book and website to learn about the places I'll pass through. Most people around, including my family, seem to think I'm a little out of my mind but I know what I'm doing.”
Perry has been listed for the current round of“Great Britons”, a program which is looking for people who need support to develop their talent in the areas of sport, fashion, performing arts and so on.Through the program, Perry hopes to win a flight from home to Vancouver, from where he'll make his way to Alaska. He would also like to fly his parents out to Argentina to see him finish. He says,“Free flights would save me so much money, which I can put to better use during my trip. I want every spare coin to go to help the poor, so winning these flights would mean the world to me.”

Dear Sandy,
I am writing to apologize for the misunderstanding that occurred when I invited you to the party held at my home. You promised that you would come, but I didn't make my address clear. I had thought that the first floor was the floor of a building at the ground level. But actually in British English it is the floor of a building just above the one at the ground level. As a result, I failed to meet you at my party. Please accept my sincere apology.21教育网
I feel very sorry for not having considered your culture. In China the first floor is always thought of as what you consider to be the ground floor. I overlooked the difference between the two cultures. I fear you are displeased with what happened that day. I hope you will understand me and excuse me.21cnjy.com
Honestly, I hope that you can attend my party next time. I shall be grateful if you will kindly tell me when it will be convenient for you. I'm looking forward to seeing you soon.
Yours sincerely,

Retracing one of the most important trading routes of ancient civilisation, this remarkable tour aboard the luxury Golden Eagle and ShangriLa Express trains follows in the footsteps of such legendary figures as Alexander the Great and Marco Polo.
Crossing both Russia and China as well as some of the remotest former Soviet republics — Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan — our journey will take in some of the most magnificent yet littlevisited sights from the ancient world. Eastbound (向东的) trips start in Russia's capital Moscow, where we have plenty of time to explore. We travel on to Volgograd — better known as Stalingrad — where the Soviets turned the course of the Second World War, before heading for far remoter places that owe their importance to a time much further back in history.www.21-cn-jy.com
The Kara Kum desert is followed by the amazing 2,500yearold cities of Khiva and Bukhara — considered so important by UNESCO(联合国教科文组织)that it supported their restoration — and then Samarkand, the “Rome of the East”. Much admired by Alexander the Great, Samarkand is home to Registan Square, a spectacular open space surrounded by beautiful Islamic buildings and considered one of the most inspirational sights in central Asia. In between Khiva and Bukhara we take a twoday excursion into Turkmenistan and visit the capital city of Ashgabat, a huge modern folly (装饰性建筑) in the desert and a monument to the recently deceased President Sapamurat Turkmenbashi. We also visit the ancient city of Merv before returning to Uzbekistan.
After crossing the border into China, our tour takes in the fascinating Mogao Grottoes, the Jiayuguan fortress at the end of the Great Wall and the worldfamous Terracotta Warriors, an army of almost 6,000 statues recognised as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th Century. We end our journey in Beijing, the capital of modern, confident China, where the latest architecture rubs shoulders with Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City.

Could city living be making you crazy? A new report says that weak social ties may be to blame for the higher incidence of mental disorders in cities. It's not the busy life in cities surrounded by people that makes city dwellers mentally unstable. In fact, it's the opposite. Cities packed with people can actually make people feel disconnected and socially isolated.
Dr Stanley Zammit of Cardiff University in Wales led the study published in Archives of General Psychiatry, where the goal of the research was to determine whether individual, school or area characteristics had a specific link to psychosis (精神病).Living in a city was associated with a 41 per cent higher chance of psychosis compared to rural living. However, the lifetime risk of schizophrenia (精神分裂症) is about 1 per cent, so the lifetime risk of living in a city and getting the disease might rise to about 1.5 per cent, which isn't a huge difference.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
The team gathered data from more than 200,000 people living in Sweden. Those individuals were all born between 1972 and 1977. The scientists analyzed diagnoses of schizophrenia and other psychoses recorded in Sweden's national health registry (档案室) up until 2003.
The team analyzed multiple variables (可变因素) related to the individuals, including the schools they attended and the neighbourhoods they lived in. Out of all the variables examined, a weak social connection at the school level was the most significant. This finding turned up in the proportion of kids who were immigrants, who changed cities between ages 8 and 16 or who were raised in a singleparent home.
Limits of the study included a lack of data on potentially important variables such as drug use. Additionally, the researchers noted an inherent difficulty in adequately measuring neighbourhood or arealevel social fragmentation.
Invite a few friends and get out of the city for a walk in nature. Other studies have shown getting outdoors for some “green exercise” may help curb depression too. Other research has shown that social networks provide support to promote mental health. In fact, recent research showed happy people talk more.

We have been working with arts and educational institutions across the UK to promote the mainstreaming of Muslim cultures within UK everyday life. The Festival was created out of the need to encourage a better understanding between Muslims and nonMuslims, to promote respect for Muslim cultures and to show how culture creates the pathways that connect us all together.
The programme launched with a visit by the Festival's patron (赞助人),the Prince of Wales, to the exhibition “Palace and Mosque” in Sheffield and since then there have been more than 100 events that have ranged from a Somali community day in Cardiff at the National Museum of Wales to a latenight Dance with Radio Tarifa (from Spain) and Dimi Mint Abba (from Mauritania) in the Royal Albert Hall and from a homegrown play in Nottingham about the Kashmir earthquake to the exhibition “Beyond the Palace Walls” at the Royal Museum Edinburgh of lslamic art from the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.
We are now working on a number of longterm projects which stay true to our commitment to promoting Muslim cultures through arts collaborations (协作) and build on the extensive network of local, national and international partners that Festival has created. These include a threeyear national programme that connects young Muslims to their local cultural institutions; a UK Muslim cookbook; an exhibition of the Ottoman architect Sinan; and a project for schools around the 1000yearold story “The Animals' Lawsuit against Humanity”.

An apprenticeship (学徒期) is a form of onthejob training that combines workplace experience and classroom learning. It can last anywhere from one to six years, but four years is typical for most. An apprentice spends the majority of the time in a workplace environment learning the practical skills of a career from a journeyman — someone who has done the job for many years. The rest of the apprentice's time is spent in a classroom environment learning the theoretical skills the career requires. Being an apprentice is a fulltime undertaking.
One of the advantages of apprenticeship is that it does not cost apprentices anything. The companies that hire them pay for school. What's more, it offers apprentices an “earn while you learn” opportunity. They usually start out at half the pay of a journeyman, and the pay increases gradually as they move further along in the job and studies. Near the end of the apprenticeship, their wages are usually 90 percent of what a journeyman would receive. Apprenticeship also pays off for employers. It can offer employers a lot of welltrained workers to draw from.
Despite the advantages, apprentices are usually required to work during the day and attend classes at night, which leaves little time for anything else. Sometimes, they might be laid off (下岗)if business for the employers is slow.21cnjy.com
Once they have completed the apprenticeship and become journeymen, they receive a nationally recognized and portable certification and their pay also increases again. Some journeymen continue employment with the companies where they apprenticed; others go to different companies or become selfemployed contractors.www-2-1-cnjy-com
