二、补充主题句。
1. __________. Every day there are opportunities to practice listening to and speaking with English-speaking people. Also, students can experience the culture first-hand, which is a great help when trying to understand the language. This is especially true if they choose to live with the natives, as part of a home-stay family, for example. Furthermore, if students attend a language school full-time, the teacher will be native speakers.
三、阅读理解。
When greeting someone, an American’s first response is to hold out his or her hand, look directly at the person and smile. In some situations, this behavior may bring misunderstandings. Usually a handshake is not the universally accepted greeting. Also, looking others right in the eyemight not mean the same thing in other parts of the world.
When greeting Asians for the first time, do not shake hands. Physical contact may be embarrassing. Many Asians, particularly Japanese, have learned to accept handshakes when dealing with Westerners. For Japanese, a slight bow of the head is usually suitable for responding to a handshake.
People in the Middle East, particularly Muslims, avoid body contact with the opposite sex, but persons of the same sex commonly hug when greeting each other. When shaking hands, men should be careful not to pull their hand away too quickly. Also, people from France, Spain, Italy and Portugal greet friends by kissing each other on both cheeks.
Smiling is the universal gesture of friendliness. In America, smiling is a happy or friendly thing to do. In some Latin cultures, for example, smile may be used to mean “Excuse me” or “Please”.
In many cultures, avoiding eye contact is a sign of respect, but such behavior can also lead to misunderstandings. For example, some Asian students have been regarded as lacking respect for their American teachers because they do not look at the teacher while he or she is speaking.

My name is Roseanna, and I like to keep physically fit. I used to weigh two hundred pounds, but I joined the Health club for an exercise class and diet program. In one year I lost eighty pounds. I feel much better and never want to have that much weight on my five-feet frame(身躯) again. I bought two new suitcases last week. Every day I practice jogging three miles, swimming fifteen laps, lifting twenty-pound weights and playing tennis for one hour. My mother was a premature baby(早产儿).

三、阅读练习。阅读下面的短文,将短文分成三个部分并写出每部分大意。
①Today I would like to talk about the difference between Chinese food and Western food. If you talk about food with a Chinese person, I can promise you that she/he will be so proud of Chinese food.
②Chinese food is different from Western food by the way we prepare food before cooking. Chinese cut the ingredients in bite size then stir fry or steam the ingredients in short time while Westerners cook the ingredients in big pieces and cut the food on their plates with knives and forks.
③Secondly, the Chinese kitchen is a lot wilder than the Western. It seems that the preparing of Western-style food is more peaceful: What you buy is only the fish lump where you can’t distinguish anymore which kind of fish it is, even crab may have been already boiled, what you can do is to put them into the oven or the pan.
④But if you take a look into a Chinese kitchen, it seems really wild. Chicken, duck and fish are cut in the kitchen. The kitchen is full of the glint of kitchen knives. Ha-ha! I feel it is like a battle field.
⑤The tableware (餐具) of Western-style food is knife and fork; the tableware of Chinese food is only two simple small bamboo sticks — Chopsticks. So, I think the tableware of Western-style food is wilder than the tableware of Chinese food.
⑥Thirdly, the way that Chinese and people from occidental countries praise food is different.
⑦Chinese who are praising food will generally say: “Your dish is cooked excellently, it just tastes like in the restaurant”; but when Westerners praise food, they will say that it’s just tasting like home-made food.
⑧Even if there are some differences between Chinese food and Western-style food, I think Chinese food and Western-style food can get along harmoniously. For example, Chinese food overseas is suitable for oversea people’s taste, because of oversea people’s improvement. Similarly, the Western-style food in China is more suitable for Chinese taste, because of the Chinese improvement.
⑨Certainly, if you want to eat the traditional Western-style food, you should go to western countries. If you want to eat traditional Chinese food: Welcome to China!
