阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding (点头) your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty.
The British people tried to push the three gentlemen out of the way, because the gentlemen _______ .
A. were foreigners B. didn't have tickets
C. made a loud noise D. didn't line up for the bus

Time is very important in our lives. It organizes our everyday moments. However, time never had any importance in my life until I received a watch from my father.
I received this gift on a cloudy day. I had to go to the airport at 9:00 a.m. to meet my uncle and take him to my father’s house. However, I was late because I was staying with my friends. Later on that day, around 11:00 a.m., I remembered my uncle, but I was very late for him. He had left the airport and taken a taxi to my father’s house.
I got to my father’s house at 2:00 p.m. and felt ashamed of myself at that moment. After I said “hello” to my angry father and tired uncle, my father asked me to sit next to him and gave me this watch. Then he said, “Essa, did you have fun with your friends today?”
“Yes, Dad, and I’m sorry about not meeting my uncle at the airport.”
“I hope today you learned something important, and this watch will be a reminder (提醒物) for you.” He told me to take this watch and use it as an organizer of my life.
I learned a very important lesson from my father: To respect time and never be late to do something. This watch is important to me, not because of its price, but because of the lesson that I learned from it.
49. The writer’s uncle came to visit them ______.
A. by car B. by air C. by boat D. by taxi

C. Essa wasted too much time.
D. Essa forgot an important thing.
51. Why did the father give Essa a watch?
A. To punish Essa. B. To comfort Essa.
C. To teach Essa. D. To praise Essa.
52. What did Essa think of the watch?

Some beach creatures are wonderful -- like dolphins, but others are dangerous. Here are some examples of harmful beach creatures.
Puffer Fish
Puffer Fish, found in all Japanese seas, have very interesting features. They are very easy to catch but must not be eaten because their flesh and organs contain a poison. Anyone who does eat the flesh can become sick very quickly. They may even stop breathing.
The Blue Bottle
The Blue Bottle is found in most Caribbean waters. Blue Bottles float lightly on the surface of the water but their tentacles (触须) can be as long as 10 metres. Blue Bottles are much less dangerous than some other jellyfish but they can give a swimmer a bad sting (刺) if the swimmer accidentally touches them.
Stingrays
There are many different kinds of stingrays in Mauritius waters. They usually swim and feed on the bottom of the sea. Accidents can happen if people stand on them or try to pick them up. Stingrays have a sting on their tail. These stings have poison on them. If someone is stung the wound can easily become infected.

阅读下面短文,根据第58至第60小题的具体要求,尽可能简要回答问题,并将答案转写到答题卡上。
In China, more and more middle school students are getting shorter sleeping time than before. More students sleep less than nine hours every night, because they have much homework to do. Some homework is given by their teachers, and some by their parents. Also, some students don’t know how to save time. They are not careful enough while they do their homework, so it takes them a lot of time. Some students spend too much time watching TV or playing computer games. They stay up very late. Some students have to get up early every morning on weekdays to get to school on time by bus of by bike . It can be a long way from home to school. It will probably make them sleepy during school hours.
Schools and parents should cut down some of the homework so that our children can enjoy more than nine hours of sleep every night for their health. For children, they should make the most (best use) of their time. When they have enough time for sleeping they will find it much better for both their study and health.

One possible version:
Dear Jack,
From the TV I know many A/HINI I flu cases are reported recently in the United States and many schools are closed as a result. I’m so worried about you. Are you alright? Are there any A/HINI flu cases in your school? Do you still have to go to school everyday?
To stay away from the disease, you’d better stay at home as much as possible and not go to places where there are many people. Wash your hands more often to keep them clean; Open the window to have more fresh air in the room; And eat more fruit and vegetable to keep yourself fit and strong.
So far the disease is not so deadly as it seems to be. Do be at ease! Take care and you’ll be OK.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we’re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment but we’re growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings
W: Could you tell me about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.

M: Excuse me. Are you waiting to buy concert tickets?
W: Yes, I am. So are all these people in front of me.
M: Have you been here long?
W: About 45 minutes. I've moved forward a total about 3 feet.
M: You're kidding.
W: Not at all. A couple having waited for one hour ahead of me finally gave up and left.
M: Does anyone know what caused the delay?
W: There are just not enough people selling tickets this afternoon.
M: I guess I should have come before lunch.
W: Very possibly you would meet the same thing because many people have been looking forward to it for a long time.
M: You bet it is.

M: You often come to school late as well, yesterday, for example, you…
W: Yes, I'm very sorry about that. You see, my alarm clock didn't work and…
M: Your alarm clock? But you told me yesterday that the bus had broken down!
W: Oh, did I ? I just forgot to say that my clock didn't work, either.
M: It's a good story. Now tell me again why you want tomorrow off.
W: Well…er, you see, my grandfather is ill. He is in hospital and … and he's going to have an operation. I want to visit him.
M: Oh, I see. So your grandfather is ill as well.
W: As well? I … I don't understand.
M: Neither do I. When we began this conversation, you said your grandmother was ill. And you didn't say she was in an old people's home, not in a hospital.

It's eight o'clock and it's time for the Headline News Highlight. Top on our list of stories today, a fire has destroyed a $44.9 million house in Dallas, Texas. It took nearly one hundred firefighters seven hours to put out the blaze. Local police said the fire broke out at about 1:00 A.m. in the very rich neighborhood of Preston Hollow. The homeowner and his wife fled the burning house after waking up and smelling smoke.
Surrounding houses were also damaged by the fire , but firefighters were able to control the blaze before it did too much harm. Although no one died in the fire, a firefighter was injured when a burning wood beam fell on his back. I'm Scott.
