A
Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War Ⅰ we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind.
Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline, but hard training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a certain point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
1.The first paragraph tells us the author ________.
A.was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B.lost his hearing when he was a child
C.didn’t like his brothers and sisters
D.was born to a naturalist’s family
2.The author can’t remember his relatives clearly because ________.
A.he didn’t live very long with them
B.the family was extremely large
C.he was too young when he lived with them
D.he was fully occupied with observing nature
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author is a naturalist, but not a scientist.
B.The author is a scientist as well as a naturalist.
C.The author is first of all a scientist.
D.The author is neither a naturalist nor a scientist.
4.The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he ________.
A.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
B.lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
C.just reads about other people’s observations and discoveries
D.comes up with solutions in a most natural way
根据最后一段中的“But curiosity,a keen eye ... one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack.”
B
Taiwan police cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or an even cleverer cheat (诈骗).Either way, it could be the perfect crime (犯罪), because the criminals are birds — homing pigeons!
The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car: if you want the car back, pay up.Then, the car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside.Carrying the money in a tiny bag, the pigeon flies off.
There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay-at-home car thief, however, may in fact be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind — one that avoids (避免) not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place.Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has pulled a double trick:he gets money for things he cannot possibly return.Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car-owner to place an ad (启事) in the newspaper asking for help.
The theory is supported by the fact that, so far, none of the stolen cars have been returned. Also, the amount of money demanded — under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars — seems too little for a car worth many times more.
Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal.“We have more important things to do,” he said.
5.After the car owner received a phone call, he ________.
A.gave the money to the thief and had his car back in a park
B.sent some money to the thief by mail
C.told the press about it
D.went to a certain pigeon and put some money in the bag it carried
6.The writer mentions the fact that “none of the stolen cars have been returned” to show ________.
A.what Chen thinks might be correct
B.the thief is extremely clever
C.the money paid is too little
D.how easily people get fooled by criminals
7.The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A.pigeons B.the stolen cars
C.demands for money D.criminals
由上句“Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story.”可知。
8.We may infer from the text that the criminal knows how to reach the car owners because ________.
A.he lives in the same neighborhood
B.he has seen the car owners in the park
C.he has trained the pigeons to follow them
D.he reads the ads in the newspaper
C
The fate of polar bears could be even worse than estimated, because sea ice in the Arctic might be melting faster, the geological survey said in a report aimed at determining whether the big white bear should be listed as a threatened species.
“There is a definite link between changes in the sea ice and the fate of polar bears,” said Steve Amstrup, who led the research team.Arctic sea ice is already at an all time low this year and is expected to retreat (缩小) farther this month, according to the US National Snow and Ice Data Center. That means that polar bears — some 16, 000 of them — will disappear by 2050 from parts of the Arctic where sea ice is melting most rapidly, along the north coasts of Alaska and Russia, researchers said.Other polar bear populations could survive beyond that date but many of those could be gone by 2100, Amstrup said.By the end of this century, the only polar bears left might live in the Canadian Arctic islands and along the west coast of Greenland.
“Changes in future sea ice conditions will result in loss of about two-thirds of the world’s current polar bear population by the mid 21st century,” the report said.“Because the speed of Arctic sea ice decline (减退) appears to be underestimated, this judgment of future polar bear status may be conservative (保守的).”
In January, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, noting that polar bears depended on sea ice as a platform to hunt seals, their main food. The research released on Friday was sent to the Fish and Wildlife Service.A decision on the bears’ status is expected in January next year.
9.What is the correct link between changes in the sea ice and the fate of polar bears?
A.The large population of polar bear makes the sea ice melt faster.
B.Sea ice decline causes the loss of polar bears.
C.Sea ice melting brings much food to polar bears.
D.The changes of sea ice are mainly set by the polar bears.
由文中第二段的“Arctic sea ice is already at an all time low this year ...That means that polar bears — some 16,000 of them — will disappear.”
10.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A.Most polar bears could be lost by 2050.
B.There are about 16,000 polar bears left in the world.
C.The big white bear has been listed as a threatened species.
D.The research on polar bears was done by the US National Snow and Ice Data Center.
11.The purpose of writing this passage is ________.
A.to call for more donations for polar bear protection
B.to state the current situation of polar bears
C.to support the proposal raised by the US Fish and Wildlife Service
D.to persuade tourists to travel to islands in the Arctic
故A、C、D错误。
12.What’s the attitude of the writer towards the polar bear?
A.Pessimistic. B.Optimistic.
C.Object. D.Subject.
object“客观的”,A(悲观的),B(乐观的),D(主观的)。

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you are considering making up with Peter. If I were you, I would consider a bike as a birthday present for him.
As far as I know, Peter is always in poor health so he can take more exercise by riding a bike to build up his body. In the meanwhile, you can often go on an outing by bike together, which is helpful in rebuilding your friendship. Besides, taking a bike is an environmentally friendly means of transport. It’s convenient for him to get around as well.
Apart from giving him a gift, you can also adopt other means, such as travelling, seeing a movie, having dinner or going shopping together. No matter what you do, being sincere is the most important. I really hope that you can be good friends forever.
Best wishes!
