定语从句精讲精练——定语从句中关系词的省略
第一部分 讲解——关系词的省略
定语从句中关系词的省略仅限于限制性定语从句中，而在非限制性定语从句中，关系词则不可省略。
【情形1】关系代词作宾语
当关系代词who, whom, which和that在定语从句中用作动词宾语或介词位于句末时的介词宾语时，可以省略。
【例】Is this the book (which/that) you bought yesterday
【例】I know the girl (that / who / whom) you were talking to
【情形2】关系代词作表语
当关系代词that在定语从句中用作表语时，可以省略。
【例】The town is no longer the one (that) it was. (that作表语)
【例】Tom is no longer the naughty boy (that) he used to be. (that作表语)
【情形3】关系副词when, where, why的省略
用作时间状语的关系副词when通常不能省略，但有一种特殊情况，即用于day, year, time等少数几个词后时可以省略(也可换成that)；类似地，用作地点状语的关系副词where在用于place, somewhere, anywhere, everywhere, nowhere少数几个词后时可以省略(也可换成that)；关系副词why通常只用于the reason后引导定语从句，且通常可换成that或for which，均可省略。
【例】That was the time (when/during which /that) I felt terribly sorry for you.
【例】I’ll never forget the day (when/on which/ that) we spent our holiday on the farm.
【例】This is the place (where/ at which/ that) he was born.
【例】Do you know somewhere (that) I can stay for tonight
【例】That’s the reason (why/for which/ that) he didn’t came.
【例】Give me one reason (why/that) you want to get the book.
【情形4】先行词way后的关系副词
先行词way后用关系词in which在定语从句中作方式状语时，同时可用that替代in which，并可以省略。
【例】I hate the way(in which/ that) he treats his son.
