At
23,
I
was
fresh
out
of
graduate
school
and
working
in
a
nursing
home,
trying
to
decide
my
next
path
in
life.
My
job
involved
wheeling
residents(居民)
to
the
community
hall
for
activities.
Elizabeth
would
wave
from
her
darkened
room
but
refuse
to
join
the
gatherings.
Nearly
blind,
and
requiring
oxygen,
she
never
left
her
bedside.
I
soon
learned,
though,
that
she
loved
books,
and
every
day
after
work
I
would
read
to
her.
In
dim(微暗的)
light
we
made
our
way
through
“King
Lear,”
“Henry
IV,”
“Jane
Eyre,”
the
poems
of
Rupert
Brooke.
Two
golden
hours
might
pass
before
I’d
pack
up
to
return
to
my
apartment.
Before
I
could
leave
she’
d
press
my
hand,
saying,
“Child
—
my
literary
child.
You
bring
me
such
joy.”
Elizabeth’
husband
died
a
decade
earlier,
and
their
only
child,
a
daughter,
was
distant
for
what
heartbreaking
reason
I
never
knew.
One
day
an
old
friend
of
hers
visited
and
brought
her
some
soup.
Smiling
broadly,
Elizabeth
squeezed
my
arm.
“Tomorrow,
child,
we
shall
feast.”
The
next
evening
I
found
Elizabeth’s
bed
empty.
“I’m
sorry,”
the
nurse
whispered.
She
handed
me
a
box
and
nodded.
“She
left
everything
to
you.”
at
home,
I
unpacked
it,
finding
two
white
sweaters,
the
dozen
leather-bound
books
and,
at
the
bottom,
the
can
of
soup.
That
summer
I
decided
my
path.
I
returned
to
school
to
study
literature.
And
for
26
years
the
soup
has
stayed
in
my
kitchen.
It’s
remained
unopened
and
now
is
rusted(生锈的).
But
the
memories
are
preserved.
24.
Why
did
Elizabeth
refuse
to
join
the
gatherings
A.
She
had
many
books
to
read.
B.
She
was
not
a
very
social
person.
C.
She
was
restricted
in
her
movement.
D.
She
had
no
interest
in
those
activities.
25.
What
do
we
know
about
Elizabeth
A.
She
loved
writing
poems.
B.
She
often
visited
her
friends.
C.
She
got
divorced
ten
years
ago.
D.
She
had
little
contact
with
her
daughter.
26.
Which
is
correct
to
best
describe
the
author
according
to
the
text
A.
She
used
to
be
doctor.
B.
She
was
inspired
by
Elizabeth.
C.
She
taught
literature
for
26
years.
D.
She
didn’t
like
the
taste
of
the
soup.
27.
What
is
the
best
title
for
the
text
A.
A
book-loving
friend
B.
An
unforgettable
literary
journey
C.
An
interesting
nursing
experience
D.
A
short-term
job
and
its
lifelong
impact
C
My
mother
sat
in
silence,
shocked
by
my
guided
tour
of
websites
of
adventurous
families,
who
bike
around
the
world
for
charity,
sail
the
globe
in
search
of
their
roots
or
see
the
world
through
children's
eyes.
We
found
many
people
on
boats,
bikes
and
foot,
showing
that
adventure
doesn't
have
to
die
when
a
new
life
is
created.
As
one
of
my
friends
says,
‘This
is
your
one
and
only
chance
to
explore
the
world
with
your
children
as
they
are
now.’
‘Mum,’
I
began
awkwardly.
‘We're
going
to
travel
across
New
Zealand.
Two
bikes,
two
trailers(拖车),
two
toddlers(学步的孩子)
and
2,000
miles.’
‘Two
thousand
nappies(纸尿裤)
more
like.’
My
mother
wasn't
the
only
one
to
raise
objections.
While
friends
and
family
were
impressed
by
our
bravery,
they
were
horrified
at
what
it
would
involve.
‘No
nursery,
no
babysitters,
no
bath
time,
no
peace,
no
escape
...’
And
that
was
before
we
mentioned
the
real
difficulty:
pulling
50
kg
of
trailer,
toddler
and
baggage.
And
of
course
the
nappies.
‘Is
there
anything
I
can
say
to
put
you
off
’
my
mother
asked.
‘No,
Mum,’
I
replied
firmly.
‘Well,
we'll
see
about
that.’
The
challenge
of
dealing
with
my
mother's
phone
call
about
potential
disasters
is
as
great
as
anything
we
may
have
to
face
on
the
road.
Meanwhile,
we
rush
to
toilet-train
both
children
to
avoid
the
nappy
carrying.
Among
the
voices
of
doubt
and
disapproval,
I
still
sometimes
wonder
if
we
are
mad,
but
know
we
aren't
mad
alone.
We
have
now
been
in
communication
with
many
of
the
families
I
showed
my
mother
on
the
web.
And
we
can
feel
our
own
voice
getting
stronger
and
more
confident
with
their
encouragement,
advice
and
support.
Now
we
know
there
are
so
many
families
out
there
adventuring,
we're
already
developing
ideas
for
a
world
tour
to
meet
some
of
these
families
and
talk
with
them
about
their
experiences
and
spread
the
word
about
the
possibilities
for
independent
family
adventure.
As
a
friend
of
ours
said,
‘The
only
limit
is
the
parents'
imagination.’
We
intend
to
let
ours
run
wild.

many
parents
travel

the

delighted
B.
curious

worried

30.

the
author
is

A.

advice
on
training
children
B.
help
her
get
in
touch
with
friends
C.
persuade
her
to
stop
travelling
D.
make
sure

isn't
mad
31.
According
to
the
last
paragraph,
the
author
_____.
A.
is
planning
a
reunion
party
with
her
family
B.
has
already
made
a
detailed
plan
for
a
world
tour
C.
is
concerned
that
her
imagination
may
cause
problems
D.
hopes
to
meet
other
families
and
share
their
experiences
D
Many
studies
have
shown
that
students
learn
in
different
ways
and
that
good
results
can
be
achieved
if
they
are
taught
by
a
teaching
method
that
suits
them
best.
Similarly,
students'
performance
varies
in
what
types
of
test
they
are
given.
Therefore,
it
may
seem
reasonable
to
give
students
the
chance
to
choose
how
they
wish
to
be
tested.
However,
this
would
mean
teachers
would
be
forced
to
prepare
many
different
methods
of
assessment
for
the
exact
same
material.
Teachers
are
already
very
busy,
creating
tests,
grading,
coming
up
with
interesting
lesson
plans,
teaching
classes,
not
to
mention
holding
parent
teacher
conferences,
and
creating
new
tests
would
only
add
to
their
burden.
Another
strain
teachers
would
have
to
face
is
how
to
grade
fairly
and
objectively
if
students
were
tested
on
the
same
material
in
a
variety
of
ways.
For
instance,
how
do
you
compare
a
student
who
wrote
an
essay
on
one
small
topic
of
a
book
to
another
who
answered
every
multiple
choice
question
correctly
over
the
entire
book
Maybe
the
student
who
wrote
the
essay
only
read
a
small
part
of
it
in
depth
enough
so
that
they
could
write
the
essay.
But
perhaps
the
student
taking
the
multiple
choice
test
only
had
a
base
understanding
of
the
book
and
couldn't
write
a
critical
essay
about
something
in
it.
This
is
not
to
say,
however,
that
students
should
be
graded
in
the
same
manner
every
time.
This
would
be
equally
unfair
as
again,
different
students
test
better
when
assessed
by
different
methods.
Therefore,
teachers
need
to
be
sure
to
give
essay
tests,
multiple
choice
tests,
as
well
as
other
multi-media(多媒体)
projects
to
assess
their
students,
just
not
over
the
same
material.
This
gives
students
the
opportunity
to
show
off
their
abilities
and
make
up
for
tasks
that
they're
not
good
at.
For
instance,
a
student
that
is
a
bad
test
taker
could
make
up
for
their
grade
with
a
well-performed
project.
Another
option
is
to
provide
students
with
extra
credit
opportunities.
As
such,
students
could
be
allowed
to
choose
the
method
in
which
they
wish
to
complete
their
extra
credit.
If
a
student
is
a
strong
essay
writer,
they
could
write
an
extra
essay
to
make
up
for
their
poor
test
grade.
This
would
allow
students
to
compensate
for
poor
grades
in
areas
in
which
they
aren't
as
accomplished.
32.

Adventure
is
in
my
blood.
And
I
had
been
considering
how
I
was
going
to
celebrate
my
high
school
graduation.
I
didn’t
just
want
a
small
41
in
the
backyard.
I
started
thinking
about
doing
a
solo
42
somewhere
out
of
the
ordinary.
I
took
out
43
and
drew
the
1,500-mile
route
along
which
I
would
be
44
from
the
northernmost
point
in
Norway
to
the
southernmost
section
of
Sweden.
When
I
45
my
plans
with
my
dad,
he
46
as
I
thought
he
would.
Because
I
get
my
adventurous
47
from
him,
he
was
all
for
it.
I
had
only
been
away
from
my
48
three
days
now,
but
there
was
an
inner
49
going
on
inside
of
me.
Part
of
me
was
homesick
and
doubting
whether
I
50
could
make
it.
The
other
part
of
me
was
ready
to
51
to
myself
and
my
family
that
I
could
do
it
by
myself.
On
the
road,
I
met
another
52
who
was
quite
a
bit
older
than
I
was.
He
had
started
his
journey
53
by
bike
at
the
southern
part
of
Norway
and
had
just
finished.
I
could
tell
he
had
a
great
sense
of
54
.
It
encouraged
me
not
to
55
.
As
I
listened
to
my
56
artists
on
my
MP4
player,
I
pedaled
(踩踏板)
with
my
feet.
There
was
57
around
me
for
miles.
58
,
that
wasn’t
entirely
true.
There
were
mosquitoes---
millions
of
them.
My
arms
were
so
dotted
with
59
that
they
looked
like
a
topographical
map
(地形图).
But,
however
60
it
would
be,
nothing
could
stop
my
advance
towards
the
destination.
As
you
know,
adventure
is
in
my
blood.

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
The
young
artist
and
potter
Allan
had
a
wife
and
two
fine
sons.
One
night,
his
older
son
developed
a
severe
stomachache.
Neither
Allan
nor
his
wife
took
the
condition
very
61
(serious),
but
the
boy
died
suddenly
that
night.
Knowing
the
death
could
62
(avoid)
if
he
had
only
realized
the
seriousness
of
the
situation,
he
always
felt
he
was
guilty.
Worse
still,
his
wife
left
him
a
short
time
later,
63
(leave)
him
alone
with
his
6-year-old
younger
son.
Unable
to
stand
the
hurt
and
pain,
he
turned
to
alcohol
and
became
64
alcoholic.
As
the
alcoholism
65
(progress),
Allan
began
to
lose
everything
he
possessed
and
finally
died
alone
in
a
small
bar.
Hearing
of
his
death,
I
thought,
"
66
a
complete
failure!"
As
time
went
by,
I
began
to
revalue
my
67
(early)
rough
judgment.
I
knew
Allan's
now
adult
son,
Ernie,
one
of
the
kindest
and
most
caring
men
I’ve
ever
known.
I
hadn't
heard
him
talk
much
about
his
father.
One
day,
I
worked
up
my
courage
to
ask
him
what
68
earth
his
father
had
done
so
that
he
became
such
a
special
person.
Ernie
said
quietly,
"As
a
child
until
I
left
home
at
18,
Allan
came
into
my
room
every
night,
gave
me
a
kiss
and
said,
‘love
you,
son’."
Tears
came
to
my
eyes
as
I
realized
what
I
had
been
a
fool
to
judge
Allan
69
a
failure.
He
had
not
left
any
material
70
(possess)
behind.
But
he
had
been
a
kind
loving
father,
and
left
behind
his
best
love.

Many
American
cities
have
interesting
nicknames. Nicknames
can
help
establish
the
identity
of
a
city. They
can
also
spread
pride
among
its
citizens. But
nicknames
sometimes
can
make
fun
of
something.
Cleveland,
Ohio
is
a
city
in
American
Midwest. One
of
its
earliest
nicknames
was
Forest
City.
No
one
knows
for
sure
who
gave
it
this
name
in
the
1830s. But
Cleveland
probably
had
a
lot
of
trees. This
nickname
became
popular
among
local
businesses
in
the
1840s. Today,
some
businesses
in
the
Cleveland
area
still
use
Forest
City
in
their
names.
Cleveland
sits
next
to
Lake
Erie,
one
of
the
Great
Lakes
in
North
America. It
was
once
a
major
manufacturing
city. Ships
used
the
lake
for
transporting
goods. In
the
1950s,
businesses
called
Cleveland
the
Best
Location
in
the
Nation.
However,
many
factories
closed
or
moved
away. Cleveland
had
severe
financial
problems
in
the
1960s
and
70s. In
1969,
the
city
became
famous,
but
not
in
a
good
way. Cleveland’s
Cuyahoga
River
caught
on
fire
because
of
industrial
wastes
on
the
surface
of
the
river. So
in
the
1970s,
the
national
media
began
calling
the
city
The
Mistake
on
the
Lake.
Since
then,
Cleveland
has
sought
to
improve
its
image. The
Rock
and
Roll
Hall
of
Fame
and
Museum
opened
in
Cleveland
in
1995. So
the
city
is
proud
of
its
latest
nickname,
The
Rock
and
Roll
Capital
of
the
World.
