Unit 2 Food I like
Lesson 11 My favourite food
Advance preparation
See required materials listed below for the craft in today's student book section.
GREETING
Give the standard greeting to welcome students to English class.
Tell the class the title of today's lesson: My favorite food. Ask the class to repeat the lesson title with you. Ask a few students to tell the class what their favorite food is, speaking in English if possible.
LET'S LOOK AT OUR BOOKS
Give the standard command for students to take out their student books.
1. Li Ming likes noodles.
Ask the students to look at the pictures on page 22 and try to determine what might be Li Ming's favorite food. Which food does he appear to like Which food does he not like
Give the "listen" command. The audiotape will repeat each sentence. Ask the students to listen the first time, then say the words along with the audiotape the second time. The audiotape says:
[Li Ming]
I don't like meat. I don't like meat.
I like rice. I like rice.
I like dumplings. Dumplings are good!
I like dumplings. Dumplings are good!
My favorite food is noodles. Noodles are delicious!
My favorite food is noodles. Noodles are delicious!
Ask the class questions to check comprehension. Use as much English as possible. For example, you might ask What does Li Ming like to eat
What does he not like to eat Does Li Ming like dumplings What is his favorite food
2. Let's make pictures.
Required materials
a selection of colored paper cut into these shapes: square, triangle, line, rectangle and circle
markers, scissors, glue and pencils for all students
one large piece of paper for each student
Note: Teachers with large classes may wish to have their students do this activity working in groups. If so, be sure to provide enough materials for each group to have a set.
This activity reviews the shapes and helps students learn the mastery vocabulary for this unit.
Instruct the students to create pictures of food using the provided shapes. Describe today's activity to the class, using the English words for the shapes (triangle, circle, square, rectangle, line). They can glue their food creations onto the large piece of paper. Encourage students to use their imaginations!
Distribute the craft materials to the class. You might provide a long worktable at the back of the classroom where you can lay out the supplies and have students line up to collect what they need, or ask for volunteers to hand out the supplies.
Allow time for the students to work on completing their crafts. Walk around the classroom and assist anyone who is having difficulty.
TEACHING TIP
A quick way to organize groups
TO quickly organize a class of sixty students into groups of six, ask the students to "count off." They take turns saying the numbers, in order, from one to ten. Then ask the "ones" to meet in a spot in the classroom, the "twos" to meet in a different spot, and so on.
LET'S DO SOME EXERCISES
Give the standard command for students to take out their activity books.
PAGE 22. Draw and write. What is Li Ming's favorite food To find out, the students, using colored pencils, follow the line from Li Ming to the food. Then they write the indicated words in the provided space.
PAGE 23. Read and circle. The students read the word on the left and circle the correct picture.
CLASS CLOSING
Today have students number off using some of the vocabulary from today's lesson: triangle, circle, square, rectangle, line. Have the class say the words together, then have individual students number off by saying the words in order, from triangle to line, until all students have a word. Remind the students to remember their words.
When today's class is over, have the students stand by word. You might say "Now all students with the word square may stand," and then move on to another word until all students are standing. Wave and say "Good-bye" to signal that class is over.
