A
The neglected baby is crying alone. The young man, suffering from a lack of sleep, threatens suicide. The marriage fails because of the husband’s crazy behavior.
Is this just another story of social breakdown in the modern age Not really. But they are the effects of a real social problem—Internet Addiction(沉溺), or, Internet Addiction Disorder.
The addiction is obvious from the popularity of one game alone: “Halo 2”. It’s a first-person shooter developed by Bungie Studios for the Xbox video game console. By early 2005, 1 million players worldwide had clocked up an amazing 100 million hours on the game, among which are 360, 000 Chinese players.
China has about 94 million regular Internet users. Of these, a survey suggested, 4.4 million are teenagers who are so addicted to it that they neglect anything else.
Video gamers who have gone too far show symptoms similar to those of alcohol and drug abusers. “The real world meant nothing to me when I was fully involved in online games. I lost track of time, space, hunger, pain, and everything,” explained Liu Pinyi, a 19-year-old college dropout. She has had treatment in Beijing for her addiction.
What makes it similar to drugs is that online game addicts also develop a chemical imbalance in their brains. Gaming stimulates the production of a chemical compound that produces delighted or pleasant feelings. When they’re away from the screen, they suffer feelings of anxiety and headaches.
Experts say young people are attracted to video games partly because they are partly because they are pushed right into the center of the action. This allows them to overcome a lack of confidence which people at that age can often suffer from.

A. To show his worries about Internet Addiction.
B. To show harm of Internet Addiction
C. To warn couples of the problem.
D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
57. How much time in total had Chinese game players spent on “Halo 2” by early 2005
A. 1 million hours. B. 94 million hours

A. They forget time, space, hunger and everything.
B. They drink a lot of alcohol and use drug.
C. They feel confident in the virtual games
D. Their brains produce a chemical which makes them delighted.
59. what is the passage mainly about
A. Internet is bad for teenagers
B. Actions should be taken to deal with Internet Addiction
C. Web produces Internet Addiction Disorder
D. Teenagers should not play video games

She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.
The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre museum(卢浮宫博物馆)where it is housed.
“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,” the museum said. Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the world’s most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.
Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile. “It is very interesting that when you’re not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,” said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. “It’s because direct vision(视觉)is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”
However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France’s King Francis I in 1519.
In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.
During World War II, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.
Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.

A sunflower is a sunflower . A mobile phone is a mobile phone . But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment
As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower. A biodegradable (能进行生物递降分解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists.
Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any toxic chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸钾). These feed the seed and help the flower grow. Engineers have designed a small transparent window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. "We've only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time," said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists. "The seed is released and the flower grows in the pot so you don't have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it," said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.
64. The main idea of the passage is ________ .
A. the relationship between high tech and environment

A controversial new study has claimed that men really are more intelligent than women. The study concluded that men’s IQs are almost four points higher than women’s.
British-born researcher John Philippe Ruston says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace.
He claims the “glass ceiling” phenomenon is probably due to inferior intelligence, rather than lack of opportunity.
The University of Western Ontario psychologist reached his conclusion after scrutinizing the results of university ability tests taken by 1 00,000 students aged 17 and 18 of both sexes.
A focus on the factors such as the ability to quickly grasp a complex concept, verbal reasoning skills and creativity― some of the key factors of intelligence ―showed the male teenagers had IQs that were an average of 3.63 points higher. The average person has an IQ around 100.The findings, which held true for all classes and levels of education, overturn 100 year opinion that men and women average the same in general mental ability. They also conflict with evidence that girls do better in school exams than boys.
But Professor Ruston argues that the faster maturing of girls leads to them outshining boy in the classroom.
68. The report is mainly about ______.
A. a study that shows men are cleverer than women
B. the “glass ceiling” phenomenon
C. Professor Ruston’s theory on IQ
D. the difference between male and female
69. The underlined word “scrutinizing” in the fourth paragraph probably means ______.
A. making up B. carrying out C. examining carefully D. looking at

A simple eye test could predict who is likely to have a stroke in the
next seven years.
A study of more than 3600 people over the age of 50 found those with a condition called retinopathy(视网膜病)were three times more likely to suffer a stroke, even if they displayed no other risk factors.
Paul Mitchell, director of the Centre for Vision Research at Westmead Millennium Institute, said about 10 percent of people over 50 had retinopathy, diagnosed by taking high-resolution(高分辨)photographs of the retina.
“This test is a marker for stroke even for people who don’t have other stroke risk factors like high blood pressure. Usually about 2 percent of people above the age of 50 will have a stroke, but we found about 5 to 6 percent of people who had retinopathy had a stroke within six or seven years.
Professor Mitchell said damage to the retina indicated vascular(血管)problems.
“The eye and the brain circulation are essentially identical, so by taking an image of the retina we are seeing a snapshot(快照)of what might be happening in the brain.” He said the image would have to be taken by an eye specialist, rather than a GP.
Stroke is the third-largest cause of death in Australia after heart disease and cancer.
National Stroke Foundation chief executive Erin Lalor said, “About 48, 000 people a year have a stroke, and within a year of having a stroke about a third of the people die, about a third will make a complete recovery and about a third of the people die, about a third will make a complete recovery and about a third of the people will have some disability.”
Professor Mitchell said further research involving 2000 stroke patients in Sydney and Melbourne had begun to determine whether retinopathy was a predictor of certain types of stroke.
“We are now continuing to work to explore the relevance(有关性质) of this work and to see how it can play a specific practical role in the future.” he said.
“We’re recruiting(招募)about 2000 people in Sydney and Melbourne who have had a stroke to look at how common these retinal signs are, and whether they are helpful in predicting the type of stroke.”
72. We can infer from the text that “a GP” is a person who______.
A. has a special medical skill B. can treat all illnesses
C. knows how to take photos D. carries out the research
73. What is the main idea of the text
A. Eye test can predict future stroke victims
B. Eyes should be tested regularly to prevent stroke.
C. Stroke is the third-largest cause of death in Australia
D. WE can prevent stroke in the future
74. According to the text, both retinopathy and high blood pressure ______.
A. can cause stroke B. are stroke markers
C. are diagnosed b taking high-resolution photographs
D. are included in the story
75. According to the text, which of the following haven’t yet been discovered
A. Retinopathy suggests vascular problems.
B. In fact, the eye and the brain circulation are the same.
C. Retinopathy is a predictor of certain types of stroke.
D. About 16,000 people will die of stroke.

书面表达:People used to communicate with each other through letters and public phones. But nowadays they use mobile phones and the Internet instead. This change in communication has good effects on our life and pared with letters and public phones, mobile phones and the Internet are faster and much more convenient. If you miss your grandmother, you just take out your phonhe and say "hello" to her. If you want to place an order with a foreign company, you can e-mail the message, It'll be a matter of minutes before you get their reply. Aren't we living in a smaller world (101words)
2
Mor and more people rely on e-mail and mobile phones for comunication rather than letters and public phones because the new tools seem faster and make work more efficient. However this change has bad as well as good effects, especially dependence on the Internet. Firstly, as we lack enough practice, we are losing the beauty of hand-written Chinese words which express the writer better while machine words all have the same looks., Secondly, our spelling becomes worse if we rely on the machine too much. Last but not least, the PC screen does harm to our eyes. I prefer the old way of communication even though it is much too slow in the eyes of many.(116words)

第二节 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)
I got lots of interesting experiences in a free school. At first I couldn’t 16 it. There were no desks in rows or loud–sounding 17 , nor did anyone have to go to class. Though we lived “in”, 18 made us go to bed at a certain time; there was no “light out”.
The 19 thing was that practically all the students went to class, and very few people 20 late at night. Only the new people stayed up or 21 class. The new ones always went wild at first, but this 22 lasted long. Our teachers treated us like grown-ups; never did we have to 23 “stand up”, “sit down” or “speak out”. I don’t know of one student who didn’t 24 his best.
The subjects were the same as those in the 25 school, but what a difference in the approach (方法)! For example, in botany (植物学) we had no classes in spring or fall, but 26 we planted two gardens; a vegetable garden and a flower 27 . Then in winter we each studied a few particular things about what we had 28 . In maths the students built three different kinds of storerooms (储藏室,物料间)—small ones of course, but 29 . They did this instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a 30 time too, designing everything, drawing the blueprints (蓝图,设计图), figuring out the angles and so on. I didn’t take 31 . But I could do the basic things with numbers. That’s 32 .
On the whole I think I am a 33 person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else of my 34 , and I think better. That’s probably a real big 35 between the free school and normal school—the amount of thinking.

More earthquakes strike Japan than any other country on the earth. There are usually more than 10,000
small earthquakes in Japan every year, but only about 1,000 of these are strong enough for people to feel. However, Japan must always be prepared for a serious earthquake. The Japanese remember the Tokyo earth-quake of 1923, which killed over 1,000,000 people.
Many things are being done to make Japanese cities safer in an earthquake. Many older buildings have been pulled down and replaced with new ones. Buildings made of wood have been replaced with stronger concrete (水泥) ones. Food and water are kept to feed the population after an earthquake. Japan’s trains can stop automatically (自动地)when an earth-quake begins. Most Japanese houses have special supplies which are ready for an earthquake.
The Japanese government can do nothing to stop earthquakes, but it has done a lot to make sure that the people will be ready when the next earthquake strikes.
36. The passage mainly talks about _______.
A. when the most serious earthquake struck Japan
B. when the next earthquake will come to Japan

B. A lot of people lost their homes.
C. The city was seriously destroyed.
D. All of the above.
38. The Japanese government has done a lot to _______. A. stop earthquakes from happening
B. prevent earthquakes doing much harm
C. make people feel safe in an earthquake
D. keep the houses from being destroyed

How much rain has fallen on the earth in the past Man has not always kept weather records. Because scientists need a way to learn about the past rainfall, they study tree rings.
A tree’s trunk grows bigger each year. Beneath (在……下面) its bark (树皮), a tree adds a layer of new wood each year it lives. If you look at a tree stump(树桩), you can see the layers. They are called annual rings (年轮).
On some trees all of the rings are of the same width. But the ponderosa pines that grow in the American southwest have rings of different width. The soil in the southwest is dry. The pines depend on rainfall for water. In a year of good rainfall, they form wide rings. In a dry year, they form narrow ones.
Scientists do not have to cut down a pine to study its rings. With a special tool, they can remove a narrow piece of wood from the trunk without harming the tree. Then they look at the width of each ring to see how much rain fell in the year it formed.
Some pines are hundreds of years old and have hundreds of rings. These rings form an annual record of past rainfall in the southwest.
39. On the whole, this story is about _______.
A. why tree trunks grow bigger
B. why scientists study tree rings
C. trees that lived hundreds of years ago
D. the ponderosa pines in the American southwest
40. Why do the scientists study the width of the tree rings
A. They want to know how big the tree will grow.
B. They want to move the pine trees.
C. They want to find out whether the trees depend on rainfall for water.
D. Because the rings tell them how much rain has fallen.
41. Which of the following does this story lead you to believe
A. Young trees have few annual rings.
B. The trunk of a tree never changes in size.
C. Trees in the southwest do not need water.
D. The soil in the southwest is fit for the growth of trees.

El Nino, an unusual warming of surface ocean waters in the eastern tropical Pacific, is one part of what’s called the Southern Oscillation (波动). It is the see-saw pattern of reversing (反向的) surface air pressure
between the eastern and western tropical Pacific; when the surface pressure is high in the eastern tropical Pacific it is low in the western tropical Pacific, and vice-versa (反之亦然). Because the ocean warming and
pressure reversals are, for the most part, at the same time, scientists call this phenomenon the El Nino for short. South American fishermen have given this phenomenon the name El Nino, which is Spanish for the “Christ Child,” because it comes at the time of the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child—Christmas.
Scientists do not really understand how El Nino forms. It is believed that El Nino may have contributed to the 1993 Mississippi and 1995 California floods, drought conditions in South America, Africa and Australia. It is also believed that El Nino contributed to the lack of serious storms such as hurricanes in the North Atlantic.
Unfortunately not all El Ninoes are the same nor does the atmosphere(大气) always react in the same way from one El Nino to another. This is why NASA’s Earth scientists continue to take part in international efforts to understand El Nino events. Hopefully one day scientists will be able to provide sufficient warning so that we can be better prepared to deal with the damages and changes that El Nino causes in the weather.
42. What is El Nino
A. The lasting warm winters around the world.
B. The irregular changing of bad weather in the world.
C. The warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean.
D. A serious lack of rain in Africa.
43. Scientists have been studying El Nino _______.
A. to tell the future of the world
B. so that they can tell the cause of bad weather
C. because they want to help Africa to get enough rain
D. to offer people help in fighting against nature
44. The writer suggests in the passage that scientists _______.
A. have found the cause of the appearance of El Nino
B. can use El Nino to prevent many people from starving
C. are far from knowing the cause of El Nino and controlling it
D. can tell when El Nino will appear
45. From the passage we know that _______.
A. El Nino happens every two years
B. the weather around the world is controlled by El Nino
C. El Nino often brings people unusual weather
D. El Nino happens only in Africa

What Can Make People Happy
MADRID--What is it that makes people happy Youth, health, a good job, good looks, a flashy car None of these things, Spanish experts say.
The concept CZ of happiness is coming under increasingly close examination in Spain.
As the nation rises to the club of the world’s wealthiest countries, people are discovering that material things do not bring happiness.
“Most people use money as a measure of human value,” says Jesus Ynfante, author of a book on Spain’s 300 biggest fortunes.
“Expensive products are regarded as the best. The rich are admired simply for being rich,” Ynfante said.
Yet psychologists warn that happiness cannot be bought. They advise people to look for it in human relations and in the small pleasures of everyday life.
Many people regard happiness as a moment of ecstatic pleasure (狂喜)--something that, by definition, cannot last--while others speak of it as peace and acceptance of oneself. Polls (问卷调查) in different countries indicate that between 65 and 85 percent of the world’s population regard themselves as reasonably happy.
Around 40 percent of a person’s happiness is thought to be determined by genetics, while the rest depends on childhood environment and the process of growing up.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about happiness is that it has little to do with age, health, wealth, or other values thought to be important in Western society.
For most Spaniards, happiness is linked with feeling close to other people.
Happy people accept their limitations and set themselves reachable goals, experts say.
There are lifestyle choices which favour happiness, such as exercise, eating carbohydrates and exposing oneself to sunlight.
But the main secret of happiness is to take pleasure in small things.
“If you are given a choice between eternal (永久的) happiness and a cheese sandwich, take the sandwich,, advises musician Julian Hernandez.

One thing safe to say about robots is that anything you can write about them will already be out of date by the time it’s read. That’s how fast robot technology is moving ahead.
All over the country and the world, in universities, business, and government laboratories, research is under way into building better robots.
The most remarkable (不平常的,卓越的) progress in robot development will come in the robot brains, though it’s not likely that any totally new kind of computer that better imitates the human mind will be invented. Most experts say computers will go on steadily growing smaller, cheaper, and more powerful.
Your next robot will be much, much smaller than the last one. And that’s very good news for anyone trying to build a human-like robot.
A lot of things we would have liked our robot to have, like robot speech or legged walking system, exist already, but only in the laboratory.
With tomorrow’s smarter computers it will be a different story. Full speech and partial sight will be possible. Programming your next robot could be as simple as talking to a friend.
Another area where we can expect a lot of progress is in the robot’s senses; it can feel and sense with skill.
Plastic skin with many built-in sensors to the square inch will let your next robot feel the shape of whatever it’s holding. It’ll also let the robot pick up anything, from an egg to heavy motor part, without crushing(破裂)or dropping it.
51. According to the author, robot technology is________.
A. moving forward slowly B. developing rapidly
C. making no more progress D. experiencing some difficulties
52. We are likely to see the most remarkable progress ________.
A. in the robot’s senses B. in the robot’s legs
C. in the robot’s brains D. in the robot’s arms
53. Most experts think that tomorrow’s computers will be ________.
A. more expensive B. bigger C. more dangerous D. smarter
54. According to the passage, your next robot can do all of the following except ________.
A. have full speech B. imagine things like humans
C. feel and sense effortlessly D. pick up things safely
55. Which of the following statements is true
A. Most of today’s research is directed toward household robots.
B. An entirely new kind of computer that better imitates the human mind will be invented very soon.
C. Your next robot will be capable (有可能) full sight.
D. It will be very easy for you to program your next robot.

Paper-free studies
Imagine a classroom missing the one thing that's long been considered a necessary part to reading and writing paper. No notebooks, no textbooks, no test paper. Nor are there any pencils or pens, which always seem to run out of ink at the critical (关键的) moment.
A "paperless classroom" is what more and more schools are trying to achieve.
Students don't do any handwriting in this class. Instead, they use palm (手掌) size, or specially-designed computers. The teacher downloads texts from Internet libraries and sends them to every student's personal computer.
Having computers also means that students can use the Web. They can look up information on any subject they're studying from maths to social science.
High school teacher Judy Herrell in Florida, US, described how her class used the Web to learn about the war in Afganistan (阿富汗) over one year ago.
"We could touch every side of the country through different sites from the forest to refugee camps (难民营)," she said. "Using a book that's three or four years old is impossible."
And exams can go online too. At a high school in Tennessee, US, students take tests on their own computers. The teacher records the grades on the network for everyone to see and then copies them to his own electronic grade book.
A paperless classroom is a big step towards reducing the waste of paper. High school teacher Stephanie Sorrell in Kentucky, US, said she used to give about 900 pieces of paper each week to each student.
"Think about the money and trees we could save with the computers," she said.
But, with all this technology, there's always the risk (危险) that the machines will break down. So, in case of a power failure or technical problems, paper textbooks are still widely available (可用的) for these hi-tech students.

London has a new magazine. But it is not printed on paper. Everyone who has a television can receive it because it is on TV. In order to read this magazine, you have to have a decoder. Each page of it is numbered, so you only have to dial the number to choose which subject you want to read about. There is a wide choice—everything is included from cooking to the latest sports news. If you want to read the news, the first thing you have to turn to is the index page which has an easy-to-remember page number,100 for example. Then you start choosing what you want to read. The news is on page 101 to 109 so you push out the numbers and the news appears written across your screen. Perhaps you want to go out in the afternoon, so you press 181, and a brightly colored weather map appears on the screen. But the weather is terrible so you decide to go shopping and dial 162 for the list of the week’s best bargains. But should you drive or take a train To answer that question you only have to press 189 for the traffic report. It is very simple to use. Journalist type new material directly onto the screen and whole pages of the magazine can be replaced in minutes. London already has three services. One, transmitted by ITV, is called ORACLE while the other two ,on BBC, are called CEEFAX because they let you see facts.
Although CEEFAX and ORACLE have been operating for some time, they have not been well publicized. Western teens share their top tunes
Have you ever wondered what kind of music kids across the Pacific Ocean are listening to Are they crazy about Britney Spears Do they love the Backstreet Boys Or do they dance to Eminem
Well, nearly 6,000 teens have taken part in a Teens & Music study, conducted by USA Weekend Magazine last autumn. And the results show what type of music is hot and what is not.
It comes as no surprise that hip-hop (街舞音乐) and rap (说唱乐) are the most popular types of music among American teenagers. They began in the mid-1970s, with young black kids in New York, taking music onto the streets. Hip-hop and rap are well-known for the breakdancing (霹雳舞) that goes with them.
The word "rap" comes from a 1960s slang (俚语) word for conversation. It is a rapid, slangy rhyme (韵律) that is spoken rather than sung.
Eminem is among the most popular rappers ever to hit the US. His first album "The Marshall Mathers LP" topped the American music chart (排行榜) in May 2000. Although about a third of teens in the US showed their support for him, almost as many said that his music was so offensive that they couldn't listen to it.
Compared with Eminem, actor-rapper Will Smith is more of a star for the kids. He was awarded the Wannabe Award, on April 12 at Nickelodeon's 16th Annual Kids' Choice Awards. It is an award given to a celebrity whom kids most want to be.
Pop music, such as Brittney Spears and the Backstreet Boys has always suited the tastes of the general public. It continues to enjoy support among teens and is second most popular after rap.
Third is rock — music with exciting dance beats (节拍) and simple lyrics that speak loudly of social problems. The melodies (旋律) are led by electric guitars. Rock became popular in the US in the early 1950s. American singer Elvis Presley and British group the Beatles became world-famous rock artists.
The study also showed that jazz is least loved by American teens. It developed in the latter part of the 19th century from a mixture of African work songs and hymns (赞美诗). Jazz tends to be the type of music that people enjoy more as they get older.
49. Which of the following developed the earliest, according to the text
A. Hip-hop and rap. B. Breakingdance. C. Rock. D. Jazz.
50.What does the word “offensive” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Loud. B. Quick. C. Unpleasant. D. Slangy.

Tomb-Sweeping Day
A well-known poem by Tang Dynasty writer Du Mu tells of a sad scene in early April: "rains fall heavily as Qingming comes, and passers-by with lowered spirits go. " Qingming Day, the traditional tomb-sweeping day, falls on April 4-6 each year. It is a time for remembering loved ones who have departed. People visit their ancestors′ graves to sweep away the dirt.
Its origin dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period. Jin prince Chong′er ran away from the country with his supporters due to persecution. They were homeless for 19 years and things got so bad that Chong′er began to starve to death. One of the prince′s faithful followers, Jie Zitui, cut a piece of muscle from his own leg and served it to his master. Chong′er was saved and, in 636 BC, he took back the throne.
He rewarded the officials who had stayed loyal to him but he forgot about Jie Zitui. By the time Chong′er remembered him, a heartbroken Jie Zitui had traveled deep into the mountains. Chong′er wanted to persuade Jie to come home, so he had the hills set on fire. But Jie was later found beside a large tree, with his old mother on his back. Both were dead.
Saddened by the tragedy, Chong′er ordered that fires could not be lit on the day of Jie Zitui′s death. From this comes Hanshi Day, or Cold Food Day. People visited Jie Zitui′s tomb the next day to pay their respects. Over time, Hanshi Day was replaced with tomb-sweeping day.

People seldom feel neutral about poetry. Those who love it sometimes give the impression that it is an adequate substitute for food, shelter, and love. It isn’t. Words, no matter how satisfying, are never an equivalent (相当的) for life itself and its human experiences. Those who dislike poetry on principle sometimes claim, on the other hand, that poetry is only words and good for nothing. That's not true either. It is easy to become frustrated by words in poetry or in life—but when words represent and recreate genuine human feelings, as they often do in poetry, they can be very important. Poetry is, in fact, more than just words. It is an experience of words, and those who know how to read poetry can easily extend their experience of life, their sense of what other people are like, their awareness of themselves, and their range of human feelings.
One reason poetry can be so important is that it is so closely concerned with feelings. Poetry is often full of ideas, too, and sometimes poems can be powerful experiences of the mind, but most poems are primarily about how people feel rather than how people think. Poems provide, in fact, a language for feeling, and one of poetry’s most insistent values involves its attempt to express the inexpressible. How can anyone, for example, put into words what it means to be in love or what it feels like to lose someone one cares about Poetry tries, and it often captures exactly the shade of emotion that feels just right to a reader. No single poem can be said to express all the things that love or death feels like, or means, but one of the joys of experiencing poetry occurs when we read a poem and want to say, “Yes, that is just what it is like;I know exactly what that line means but I’ve never been able to express it so well.” Poetry can be the voice of our feelings even when our minds are speechless with grief or joy.

A. is more than just words B. is the poets' feelings about words
C. is anything but patterns of lines D. is an experiment on the use of words
44.Poetry tries, persistently, to express ____________.
A. what love and death mean B. what people think about themselves
C. what people feel but find it hard to describe D. how people go through life
45.This passage is mainly about ____________.

Du Fu(712~770) was one of the greatest poets in the Tang Dynasty. His poetry first came to be recognized at the Tang Dynasty. Readers of many different periods have considered Du Fu to be the greatest poet of the Chinese tradition. Such general agreement can partially be explained by the immense variety of his works, which hold up quite well to different tastes and historical changes in fashion. Like Shakespeare in English tradition, Du Fu's poetry came to be so deeply bound up with the constitution of literary value that generation after generation of poets and critics rediscovered themselves and their interests in some aspect of the poet.
Chinese critics from the Song Dynasty referred to Du Fu as the “poet-historian”. Both before and after the An Lushan Revolt, Du Fu witnessed a typical political and social situation; the common people still lived in poverty while the emperor and his top officials enjoyed a foolishly luxurious life. He composed many poems such as “Song of the War Chariots”, “Three Officials”,and “Three Departures”. His poems expressed his dissatisfaction with the government and his great pity for the common people. Du Fu used his poems to comment on current events and historical images. Du Fu became the historian by creating his responses to particular situations.
Du Fu was talented. When he was young, he wanted to get a good job in the government. Unfortunately Du Fu was refused several times. It was in his fifties that he began to serve as a minor official in Chang’an (Xi’an). Gongbu was his official title and probably he was in charge of the local industry.
Du Fu was not a skilled survivor in government politics. He was dismissed in the form of a transfer to the post of personnel administrator in Huazhou and so left Changan. Du Fu soon gave up this minor post in disgust and set off with his family to Qinzhou in the Northwest. After a short stay he moved on again and in 759 he arrived in Chengdu. He set up a modest cottage with some money he borrowed from his friend who served as a local governor. In the cottage he had a simple and peaceful life for three years, writing about 240poems. Mostly inspired by the cottage, the stream nearby and the scenery in Chengdu, these poems give the impression that he was happier in Chengdu than any other time in his life. The poems of this period sound relaxed and happy.
Du Fu left Chengdu after 762 and wandered in the southern provinces and eventually died of illness in 770. After his death, the people of Chengdu built a shrine(神殿)on the site of his garden to honor him, which is known as part of Du Fu Thatched Cottage now.

The Tang Dynasty was probably the period when the Silk Road was at its busiest. One important center on the road was the city of Chang’an, where present-day Xi’an now stands. Chang’an was the capital city of this dynasty and by about 750 AD it had become a strong and successful capital of around two million people. Because of the chances for trade, a number of foreigners from countries bordering China lived in the city.
The markets at this time in Chang’an were perhaps the most exciting markets anywhere in the world. They sold goods from India, Africa, Japan, Korea, Turkey, Iran and other Arab countries and many items in the markets would have been completely new to some of the buyers. Interesting animals were sold together with exotic(奇异的)plants and strange medicines. Dried animals, dried foods and dried plants were laid out for sale next to rare seeds and spices(物种).But , which drew people together, China was still largely a mysterious(神秘的)country to the outside world and certainly the secret of the silk making was still unknown.
The route(路线)to the west followed different paths but the traders would have traveled from places to places, always looking for routes both to water and protection. However, the Ming Dynasty had its policy of isolation(闭关), together with the growth of Islam(伊斯兰), reduced the traffic along this ancient land route. Instead, sea routes became more popular and in the early 15th century there were many Chinese ships trading silk and other goods along the coasts of India, Arabia and Africa.

Maybe it is true that we do now know what we have got until we have lost it, it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives. Giving someone all your love is never an insurance that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return: but if it does not. be content it grew in yours.
It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.
Do not rely on one's appearance; it can deceive(欺骗). Do not rely on wealth; even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
There are some moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug(拥抱)them.
Dream what you want to dream: go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials(磨难)to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep yon human, enough hope to make you happy
Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you. it probably hurts the other person, too.
The happiness of people do not necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your llfe so that when you die, you are he one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people, and to develop their own interests in many subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their own education, as they are responsible for what they do in life. Some students do badly in a traditional classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules. For students who worry about these things a lot, it is a good idea to be in an open classroom.
But many students will not do well in an open classroom. For some students, there are too few rules. These students will do little in school. They will not make good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem getting used to making so many choices. For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. They worry about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of students. "The noise made by boats of whale watching tourists may be causing communication problems for the animals, "British researchers said last week.
Whale watching is a popular tourist activity in places where groups of killer whales (虎鲸) live. Every day, dozens of boats filled with tourists go to watch the beautiful animals. Unfortunately, the engines of the boats make a lot of noise, and that may be causing problems for the whales, according to a report in the US science magazine Nature.
The whales travel in groups, and communicate with each other through sonic (声波的) calls that some scientists refer to as singing. The sounds of the boat engines may be creating too much background noise for the whales to be able to hear each other.
The researchers listened to recordings of whale calls made between 15 and 25 years ago, before whale watching became popular. These were compared to more recent recordings.

Living in a city has both advantages and disadvantages. It is often easier to find work. There are always many choices of public transport. Besides, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. You can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas and go to parks whenever you want to relax. However, living in a city is often very expensive. You must find a well-paid job, otherwise, you will not be able to afford the things you will do. What's more, the city is always crowded, noisy and dirty. It is very difficult to find a good place where people can enjoy peace and fresh air as in the countryside.高二英语期末考试模拟试题

Planet Hunter
When Geoff Marcy was 14, his parents bought him a telescope. Every night, he would go onto the roof outside his window to see the wonders of the sky.
“What excited me most was whether there were planets(行星)in other solar(太阳的)systems where life might exist,” he says. “I decided to try to find planets orbiting(沿……轨道运行)other stars like our Sun.”
And he did. “My fellow researcher, Paul Butler, and I found our first planet in 1995,” Dr. Marcy says. “We worked for ten years without finding anything! But we stuck with it, and our patience paid off.”
Since then, the two scientists have discovered 65of the more than 100 planets found orbiting other stars. Dr. Marcy and Dr. Butler also spotted the first “family” of three planets. In June 2002 they announced another discovery: a Jupiter-like(像木星一样的)planet orbiting star 55 Cancri.
At first, the two researchers found only planets that orbit close to stars. Recently, the scientists found planets farther out. The planet orbiting 55 Cancri is a major breakthrough: it is the first sighting of a large gas planet about the same distance from the star as Jupiter is from the Sun.
Why is this important Scientists think that life on Earth may exist because of two special features(特征)in our solar system. The first is Jupiter.
“Because it’s so big, Jupiter pulls comets and asteroids(小行星), or they all come and hit the Earth.” Dr. Marcy explains. “Without Jupiter, life on Earth would likely have been destroyed.”
A second feature is that Earth is a rocky planet where liquid water, which is necessary for life, can exist. Unlike gas planets, rocky planets like Earth have surfaces where water can gather in pools and seas, which may support life. A huge space exists between the Jupiter-like planet and two other planets that lie close to 55 Cancri. Is there an Earthlike planet in the space, too small for us to notice If so, says Dr. Marcy, “We would have two striking similarities to our solar system: a Jupiter-like planet and an Earth-like planet. And there may be life!”
56. What can we learn about Dr. Marcy from the passage
A. He is found of watching Jupiter.
B. He is from a scientist family.
C. He dislikes working with Paul Butler.
D. He is interested in finding life in outer space.

A. The planet is not as protective as Jupiter.
B. The planet is close star 55 Cancri.
C. The planet proves to be a gas planet.
D. The planet is as large as Jupiter.
58. How many planets orbiting other stars have the two scientists discovered so far
A. 100. B. 69. C. 66. D. 65.

Blameless
I was a freshman in college when I met the Whites. They were completely different from my own family, yet I felt at home with them immediately. Jane White and I became friends at school, and her family welcomed me like a long-lost cousin.
In my family, it was always important to place blame when anything bad happened.
“Who did this ” my mother would scream about a dirty kitchen.
“This is all your fault, Katharine,” my father would insist when the cat got out or the dishwasher broke.
From the time we were little, my sister, brothers and I told on each other. We set a place for blame at the dinner table.
But the Whites didn’t worry about who had done what. They picked up the pieces and moved on with their lives. The beauty of this was driven home to me the summer Jane died.
In July, the White sisters and I decided to take a car trip from their home in Florida to New York. The two older sisters, Sarah and Jane, were college students, and the youngest, Amy, had recently turned sixteen. Proud of having a new driver’s license(驾照), Amy was excited about practicing her driving on the trip. She showed off her license to everyone she met.
The big sisters shared the driving of Sarah’s new car during the first part of the trip, but when they reached less crowded areas, they let Amy take over. Somewhere in South Carolina, we pulled off the highway to eat. After lunch, Amy got behind the wheel she came to a crossroads with a stop sign. Whether she was nervous or just didn’t see the sign no one would ever know, but Amy continued into the crossroads without stopping. The driver of a large truck, unable to stop in time, ran into our car.
Jane was killed immediately.
I was slightly injured. The most difficult thing that I’ve ever done was to call the Whites to tell them about the accident and that Jane had died. Painful as it was for me to lose a good friend, I knew that it was far worse for them to lose a child.
When Mr. and Mrs. White arrived at the hospital, they found their two daughters sharing a room. Sarah had a few cuts on the head; Amy’s leg was broken. They hugged(拥抱)us all and cried tears of sadness and of joy at seeing their daughters. They wiped away the girls’ tears and made a few jokes at Amy as she learned to use her crutches(拐杖).
To both of their daughters, and especially to Amy, over and over they simply said, “We’re so glad that you’re alive.”
I was astonished. No blame. No accusations.
Later, I asked the Whites why they never talked about the fact that Amy was driving and had run a stop sign.
Mrs. White said, “Jane’s gone, and we miss her terribly. Nothing we say or do will ever bring her back. But Amy has her whole life ahead of her. How can she lead a full and happy life if she feels we blame her for her sister’s death ”
They were right. Amy graduated from the University of California and got married several years ago. She works as a teacher of learning-disabled students. She’s also a mother of two little girls of her own, the oldest named Jane.
61. The author of the passage is ________.
A. Mrs. White’s niece B. Jane’s school friend
C. The Whites’ cousin D. Sarah’s friend from college
62. How did the author’s parents differ from the Whites
A. The author’s parents were less caring.
B. The author’s parents were less loving.
C. The author’s parents were less friendly.
D. The author’s parents were less understanding.
63. How did the accident occur

B. Amy didn’t know what to do when she saw the stop sign.
C. Amy didn’t slow down so their car ran into a truck.
D. Amy didn’t get off the highway at a crossroads.
64. The Whites did not blame Amy for Jane’s death because __________.
A. they didn’t want Amy to feel ashamed and sorry for the rest of her life
B. Amy was badly injured herself and they didn’t want to add to her pain
C. they didn’t want to blame their children in front of others
D. Amy was their youngest daughter and they loved her best
65. From the passage we can learn that ______________.
A. Amy has never recovered from the shock
B. Amy changed her job after the accident
C. Amy lost her memory after the accident
D. Amy has lived quite a normal life.
C
The single, decisive factor that made it possible for mankind to settle in lasting communities(社区,聚居地)was agriculture. After farming was developed in the Middle East in about 6500 BC, people living in family units did not have to be on the move continually searching for food or hunting their animals. Once people could control the production of food and be assured of a reliable supply of it, their lives changed completely.
Farming was a revolutionary discovery. It not only made settlements possible and later the building of cities but it also made available a reliable food supply. With more food available, more people could be fed. Population therefore increased. The growing number of people available for more kinds of work led to the development of new social formations. With more and more food, a community could support a variety of workers who were not farmers.
Farming in the world over has always relied upon a dependable water supply. For the earliest societies this meant rivers and streams or regular rainfall. The first great civilizations grew up along rivers. Later communities were able to develop by taking advantage of the rainy seasons.
All of the ancient civilizations probably developed in much the same way, in spite of a few differences. As villages grew, the production of more numerous goods became possible. Cloth could be woven from wool. Houses made of wood, brick, and stone could be put up.
The science of mathematics was an early outgrowth of agriculture. People studied the movements of the moon, the sun, and the planets to work out seasons, By doing so they created the first calendars(日历).With a calendar it was possible to find out the arrival of each growing season. Measurement of land areas was necessary if field was to be divided accurately, Measurement of amounts, for example, of seeds or grains was also a factor in farming and housekeeping. Later measures of value as money exchange became common.
All of the major ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China appeared in the 4th millennium BC. Historians still argue over which one came into being first. It may well have been the Middle East. This place reaches out from the Nile River in Egypt northward along the coast of former Palestine, then eastward into Asia to include Mesopotamia. In this area people settled along the riverbanks and practiced field agriculture. This kind of farming depended on the reproduction of seed, normally from grain crops.

D. a new social formation came into being
67. Which of the following is true according to the writer

C. enabled people to arrange their agricultural activities better
D. helped create early agricultural civilization around the world
69. It can be safely concluded that _________.
A. the earliest civilization first came into being in the Middle East.
B. the development of maths played a decisive role in the birth of modern cities

Frank Lloyd Wright probably is the greatest architect that the United States has ever produced. He was very gifted and had a natural ability to design buildings. His buildings were not only beautiful, but they were also practical and useful. They fit their purposes very well. Wright’s churches, for example, make people feel like thinking and praying. His office buildings make people enjoy working, and his houses make people feel comfortable at home. However, Fank Lloyd Wright’s beautiful, practical and useful buildings are not the only reason that he is famous. There is another reason.
Frank Lloyd Wright is called the greatest American architect because he started an American style in architecture. Most of the architecture in the United States before Wright was really European, not American. Wright’s buildings do not look like old European buildings. They have their own style. Wright’s ideas about style are still used in the United States and in other parts of the world.
The most important idea in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Style of Architecture is that a building must fit its purpose and the land around it . His houses are often called “grass-land houses” because their lines are similar to the lines on the grassland. Both the lines of the grassland and the lines of Wright’s house are parallel(平行的)to the horizon, the place where earth and sky seem to meet. They are horizontal lines. Most European style houses, in contrast, have many vertical lines that form 90°angles with the horizon.

A. They were very large and beautiful.
B. They were very comfortable.
C. They could be used as churches.
D. They were beautiful in design but not practical in use.
73. What’s the most important idea in Wright’s style
A. Architectural design should match natural surroundings.
B. A building must have grassland around it.
C. American style in architect should be different from the European’s
D. Design should be more important than use.
74. Which of the following is NOT true about Wright’s “grass-land houses”
A. The lines of “grass-land houses” are similar to lines on the grassland.
B. The lines of “grass-land houses” are horizontal.
C. The color of the lines of “grass-land houses” is green.
D. They are different from European style houses.
75. The best title for this passage would be _________.
A. The Differences between the American and European Styles in Architecture
B. “Grass-land”” houses Designed by Wright
C. How to Make Your Houses More Beautiful
D. The Influence of Wright on American Architecture

Is Outer Space Worth Exploring
Although it is true that the exploration of outer space has a lot of disadvantages, for example, someone thinks that the earth is likely to be destroyed one day because of the research of outer-space weapon, in my opinion, it is well worth doing.
Firstly, though it requires a large amount of money and resources, it leads to the rapid development of advanced scientific technology, and our life may be improved in many aspects. Secondly, the exploration of outer space may also help to solve the population problem on the earth. With the success of the space shuttle, the migration to other planets in the future is not impossible. Moreover, space projects may also enable us to find a few chemical elements to cure presently incurable diseases. The research of the outer space also can improve the gene of the plants. So we can get more delicious vegetables and fruits.
In all, we human beings should try our best to speed up the steps of the research of the outer space.

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress,it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.
Try physical activity.
When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.
Take care of yourself.
You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough,or if you are not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.
Make time for yourself.
Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as important to your overall well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.
Make a list of things to do.
Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there’s so much to do,and not enough time”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then________, checking off each task as it is completed. Set out to do the most important tasks first.

A
It was an early September day, cool and bright and just right for running, and I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race over a course (路线) with a few high hills. Still, I felt energetic; despite the hills it was going to be a fine run.
Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno, a teacher from Mount Kiseo, New York. She too was running easily, moving along at my speed. The pace (步速) felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where I was; why pay attention to pace when she was setting such a nice one I’d overtake (追上) her later on when she tired.
So I ran behind her. The course headed north for miles, wandered west for a hilly mile, then turned south again along a winding road. The race was getting harder. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.
Peggy overtook a young runner. She seemed to known him, for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him. Their exchange worried me. You don’t chat during a race unless you feeling good, and Peggy plainly was.
Still, I was close enough to overtake her if she tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were getting nearer to a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test. We were a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Peggy was moving away-first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no help of catching her. She beat me soundly.
There is an important lesson in that race. Women are thought to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled in sport. Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly showed, the similarities between men and women runners are more important than differences. I have run with a number of women, and I can say it is often hard work..

A. It would be hard work. B. It would be an easy race.

A. Peggy overtook the young runner. B. Peggy was running energetically.
C. Peggy was laughing as the writer. D. Peggy paid no attention to the writer.
38. By saying “a long, punishing hill” (paragraph5), the writer implies that ______.
A. Peggy would fail to reach the hilltop B. men are more skilled at climbing hills
C. overtaking Peggy would be easy D. climbing the hill would be a demanding task
39. What lesson dose the writer learn from the race:
A. Women are as good as men in sport. B. Women are better at climbing hills.
C. He should have more training in a cross-country race.
D. He should set a quicker pace at the beginning of a race.

About ten years ago, a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE, which was only two months old.
He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and-WHUMP!-it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! SCREECH... !!!! Immediately Josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, “What was that all about and who are you Just what the heck are you doing !” Building up a head of steam, he went on.“That’s my new Jag, that brick you threw is gonna cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it ”
“Please, mister, please... I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do!” begged the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop!” tears were streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother, mister,” he said. “He rolled of the curb (路沿)and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.” Sobbing, the boy asked the businessman, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair ” he’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.”
Moved beyond words, the young businessman tried hard to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. Straining, he lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapers and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be OK. He then watched the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long walk back to the black, shining, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE — a long and slow walk. Josh never did fix the side door of his Jaguar. He kept the dent (凹痕)to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at him to get his attention. Feel for the bricks of life coming at you.

Experts have put forward detailed plans to a tunnel (隧道) to join Taiwan with the Chinese mainland.
The shortest proposed route would be 126 kilometers-more than twice the length of the English Channel Tunnel. And the longest proposed route would be 207 kilometers.
A recent conference in Xiamen, Fujian Province brought together more than 70 experts. The event was co-sponsored (共同发展) by universities from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.
Fujian is the province where both proposed routes would begin.
There is no direct passenger access (通道) between the mainland and Taiwan by air or sea at the moment.
Experts say that it is better to start research sooner rather than later, although there is a lack of government funding. There are no technical problems to build a Taiwan tunnel. But it will require an improved political relationship across the Straits.
A professor of Tsinghua university said, "A special feature of huge projects is that the period of preparation is longer than the period of construction."
For example, he said, the English Channel Tunnel took 14 years of planning and had been discussed for two centuries. And preparations for the huge Three Gorges dam on the Yangtze River began in the 1950s.
The Xiamen conference focused (集中) on the longest southern route., which would use the Taiwan-controlled islands of Jinmen and Penghu as stepping stones.
The first stage of the new project could be a bridge to cross the five kilometers between Xiamen and Jinmen. This would mean that travelling from Xiamen to Jinmen by car would only take five minutes.
The longest tunnel now being planned anywhere in the world is the 54-kilometer Land tunnel to link Lyon in France with Turin in Italy. The tunnel will not be completed until 2015-2020.
44. Which is the longest tunnel in the world at present

B. there are many problems to be solved before doing something
C. discussions among countries usually take a lot of time
D. the preparation takes longer time than the construction
46. Which of the following is NOT true
A. Universities both at home and abroad have sponsored (赞助) the plan.
B. If the project is completed, the world's longest tunnel will appear.
C. You can't reach Taiwan from the mainland directly at present.
D. The starting point of the proposed tunnel is in Fujian.
47. What is the possible difficulty in carrying out the plan
A. The lack of money for the project from the government.
B. Improving the relationship between Taiwan and the mainland.

Mountain lions live in mountainous areas of the western United States. Lately, however, people have reported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all across the country! Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable. In addition, the lions appear to be moving east. They were even reported in the suburbs (郊区) of Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago.
It seems certain that these “kings of the mountains” are moving. Why Scientists are not sure. Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the west, younger wild cats are leaving the area. These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food.
“The young males are looking for new homes,” says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento, Calif. “People tend to create too many barriers (障碍), such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise. As the mountain lions seek new places and food and water sources (水源) , these barriers get in their way.”
The sightings have made people increasingly watchful. Sometimes the “mountain lions” that people report seeing turn out to be large dogs or even house cats. But at least a few of the meetings have been real. The building of new roads, the growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoor activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion.
Because many people are concerned about the reappearance of the American lion, an expert outlined some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats: Never leave pets or pet food outside; properly care for farm animals; and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another.
“To be fair,” says the expert, “mountain lions are trying to regain their homes. They were here first. Now we need to find ways we can live together.”

书面表达
Dear Mr Smith,
I was so pleased to hear from you and I am writing to tell you something about education in China.
Great changes have taken place in education. When the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, only 20% of the children had the chance to go to school. And about 80% of the adults could neither read nor write. To our joy, since our country carried out reform and opening-up policy, education has developed rapidly. In the past twenty years, China has sent as many as 500,000 students to more than 100 countries and has received about 140,000 returned students from 164 countries. They are all working hard. Now all citizens enjoy equal education rights. All over the country, more than 98% of the children are attending school.
I hope you can come and see for yourself some day.
Best wishes
Yours
Li Hua
