Teaching procedures:
In General:
In Welcome to the Unit, four pictures showing different kinds of realtionships are familiar to all students. Seeing these pictures, students will recall their friendships with others. Guided by teachers, students are able to share their best memory with the rest. Some vital qualities may contribute to their successful realtionship with others. Thus students are encouraged to list some of them. The more discussion, the better. But, ups and downs are very common in our friendships. So students’ stories are needed to be shared now. Afterwards, discussion begins. Solutions to different problems are welcome.
In detail:
Step 1: Greetings (Greet the whole class as usual)
T: Good morning/afternoon, everyone!
Ss: Good morning/afternoon, Miss Cai!
Step 2: Lead-in
Get students to recall how we greeted just now. Thus they will pay attention to the differece between formal and informal greetings. Students’ definitely know that different relationships account for different greetings. Teachers can reach this point by asking the following questions:
1) How did we greet each other
2) Would you take different approaches when facing your best/close friends Do you have close friends
Student’s answers are various and less important. What matters is that students are led to the situation realted to the topic.
Step 3: Brainstorm
When all the students are involved in the situation related to friendship, they are encourged to share their best memory with the whole class as well as their feelings when staying with their close friend. I will guide the whole class by asking the following questions:
1) Are you often with your best friends How do you feel when you stay with him/her/them
Ss: … …(happy, glad, relaxed, at ease, … …)
2) Which picture on page 1 can best describe your feelings then
Ss:… …
3) By asking ‘ Why do you choose him/her as your best friend instead of others ’, different qualities maybe appear. Students will further get involved in the topic.
S: … shared interest/hobby, trust, honesty, common pursuit, shared experience/suffering, … ….
4) BY asking “ How long have your friendship last And have you ever quarreled What caused that ’, some answers or vocabulary such us misunderstanding, feeling betrayed, disagreement, indifference, being separated, not being helpful,… ….
5) BY askig ‘what will you do when encounting this kind of unpleasant problems ’, possible solutions will be brought to our face, such as Have a talk peacefully, make an apology,… …
So in this part, all the questions are related to their daily life. Most of students have experienced them. They will be able to say something. Thus their speaking ability is strengthed here.
