In general
In Welcome to the unit, six pictures and three questions are all Ss can access to in the textbook. However, Ss are supposed to do a lot of talking and discussing about their opinions on happiness, and talk about how to help someone who is unhappy by gaining some information shown through multimedia. First, some individuals are asked if they are happy and why, In order to stimulate the Ss’ interest, students are encouraged to list some things involved in happiness through multimedia. Next get students to enjoy a video to see what happiness is in foreigners’ eyes. After expressing their opinions about happiness, they are expected to study the six pictures in the textbook and fully participate in the discussion, practice their spoken English and further understand happiness. Then get students to discuss the three questions below the pictures, they are expected to express their own opinions towards happiness and what they can do to help the unhappy people. At last, students enjoy a little poem and some famous sayings about happiness. At the end of the period, Ss are encouraged to interview some people about happiness and write an essay on happiness. In a word, the whole lesson is a big discussion involving all the Ss brainstorming, discussing in groups or pairs and interviewing, which will hopefully pave the way for the learning in the section of Reading.
In detail
Step 1: Greetings and lead-in
T: Are you happy today
S1: I did well in this exam and I got praise from the teacher, so I feel very happy.
T: You did a good job.
S2: I am often made to study much harder though I have been working very hard at my lessons, so I feel not happy.
S3: I feel unhappy, because I always feel under pressure in my study. Although I study very hard, I still can not catch up with others.
T: Do not lose heart. Just as the saying goes: where there is a will, there is a way. I believe if you continue to study like this, you will make progress.
S3: I feel happy today. My mother will come to see me this afternoon. I look forward to it!
T: In your class, some feel happy, while others do not. So what is happiness on the earth, and how can we become happy Have you ever thought about that before
Ss: Yes! /No.
T: Well. It does not matter. You will find much about that after learning this unit.
Step 2: Brainstorming
Ask them what they think would be involved in the topic. Then list some things involved in happiness in the PowerPoint. Eg. Health, love, friends, family, power…
Step 3: Interview
Let students enjoy a video and see what happiness is to these foreigners.
Step4: Presentation
T: Ok! Please open your book to page 17! Let us look at the pictures. I’d like to divide you into 6 groups, and each group focuses on one picture. Use your common knowledge to describe each picture.﹙students begin to talk about the pictures in groups﹚﹚
T: Time is up! Are you ready
Ss: Yes!
T: Group 1, please!
S: In the picture, a girl is painting on the river side. The water is blue and calm. The scenery is so beautiful that the girl is totally attracted. And she wants to express happiness by painting it.
T: Very good. Ok, group 2, what about you
S: ….
T: What do you think of his description
Ss: Wonderful!
T: I agree with you. Ok, it’s time for group 3. Any volunteer
S: ….
T: Yes! That is it! Very good! Next group
S: ….
T: Now, group 6
S: ….
T: Wonderful!
Different people have different understanding of happiness. To some people, it means an easy life, a good job, money; to some, it may be helping others, contributions to one’s country......
Step 5: Discussion
T: Up to now, we have talked about the six pictures. Now, discuss the questions below in groups of four.
T: Ok, time is up, are you ready
Ss: Yes!
T: We all know that reasons for happiness are quite different. But, are there any things that can make everyone happy
S: Health, love, kindness, achievement, satisfactory jobs …. ﹙﹙teacher lists their answers on the blackboard﹚﹚
T: Very good opinions. I agree with you.
T: Wonderful! Just now, we all stated some things that may make everyone happy. Everyone did a good job. Now, let us move on to next question: How to help our unhappy friends
S: ….
T: That is it! And I still remember, just now, some said he was unhappy because he felt under pressure in study. Do you think that he will make progress in the future
Ss: Of course. We all believe that!
T: Everyone can do things well with support from friends.
S: ….
T: Good idea! Any others
S: I will say with my unhappy friends, too. I will listen to whatever he/ she tells me. If possible, I will help him/her find out the problems and give some suggestions.
S: I will always be with him/her whenever he/she is in trouble.
T: That is so great of you!
Step 6: Reading
Give students a poem on happiness and ask them to read it aloud.
Happiness is a tree,
With joy, sweetness, and excitement as its fruits.
Happiness is a house,
With gentleness, comfort and love as its furniture.
Happiness is a teacher,
Who teaches us to love, to sacrifice and own…
Happiness is a hope plus the faith of you and me.
Happiness is Spring's wind, Summer’s flowers, Autumn's fruits, and Winter's snow.
Happiness is shapeless and invisible at all,
We need to touch it with full hearts.
Step 7: Sharing famous sayings about happiness
Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself
------Emerson
幸福是香水,你洒在别人身上时,自己也会沾上一两滴.
-------爱默森
Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but
which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
幸福是一只蝴蝶,你追逐它的时候,总是追不到;但如果你悄悄地坐下来,它也许会飞落到你身上。
Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.
幸福不在于拥有金钱,而在于获得成就时的喜悦以及产生创造力的激情。
The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved.
生活中最大的幸福是坚信有人爱我们。
Happiness grows at our own firesides, and is not to be picked in stranger garden.
幸福生长在我们自己的火炉边,而不能从别人的花园中采得。
Step 8: Interview
Let students practice in small groups, one is the interviewer and the rest in each group are interviewees, the interviewer can ask the interviewees any questions about happiness, after the interview, the interviewer in each group reports the result to the whole class.
Step 9: Summary
T: Today, we have discussed about happiness, and all of you have done a good job. I feel so happy with you. At the end of this class, I hope every one of you will be happy every day. I also hope you can make everyone around you happy.
Step 10: Homework
1. Write an essay about your understanding of happiness.
2. Read the passage in Part B on p113 : Finding happiness
Feedback
Mine
In the whole class, the Ss have shown great interest in talking about happiness. First, the individuals’ performance served as an active lead-in. And the first high tide came when they are encouraged to list some things involved in happiness, The second high tide is when they discuss the six pictures in the textbook and give their own opinions about happiness and how to help those unhappy people. The real climax is when students are asked to do an interview and report their result to the whole class.
Another achievement is that the effect of class teaching has gone beyond the limit of classrooms. Ss’ initiative of autonomous study has shown in their homework. There are some beautiful sentences in their essays, for example: On the road to happiness, if you shed tears when you miss the sun, you will also miss the stars; Even if we are in the darkness now but we can also firmly believe that there is always the rainbow after the rainy days. It shows that Ss now have a large range of knowledge gained in various ways. And this promotes me to decide to learn more.
I think, although courseware is used, the design of writing on the Bb is also necessary. We should realize the organic combination of courseware and Bb. My Writing on the Bb is like this: the left part of the Bb is taken up by the screen; the central, the title, What is happiness to you Welcome to the unit, the right part, some new and key words.
In this period, I gave each small step an exact time in order to leave more time to the Ss, and I got a satisfactory result.
