Teaching procedures
In general
In Welcome to the unit, four pictures and two major questions are all students can access to in the textbook. However, students are supposed to do a lot of talking and discussing about historic sites here. To warm up, students are asked to name as many Chinese or foreign historic sites as possible. Also, if possible, some students with a certain experience of visiting a historic site can make a short presentation with the help of the teacher. Then get them to enjoy the pictures on P.1 and get more imagination about the four historic sites by answering the relevant questions raised by the teacher. With the hints given by the teacher, the Ss will be quite clear about the information of these four ones. To ensure their full participation, another task is given— to discuss in groups to get some more background information and try to make a small speech to introduce one of those four ones. At last, further discussions about the preservation of historic sites and the future of modern architecture are to be carried out. In this part, students are supposed to really think hard and come up with some original ideas, which can reflect their attitudes towards the questions. At the end of the period, Ss are encouraged to do a consolidation exercise—to fill in the blanks using the appropriate words from this unit with the guide of their own background information. In a word, the whole lesson is a big discussion involving all the students. Brainstorming, discussing in groups or pairs are the main activities, which will hopefully pave the way for the learning in the section of Reading.

Feedback
Mine
80% accomplishment is satisfactory. Group work and pair work nearly involved everyone because this topic is familiar to Ss and they know lots of background information. So the discussions are always heated. One highlight in this period was the presentation of Ss who have visited some of the historic sites, which aroused others’ interests. It would have been a better choice to show some pictures of the foreign historic sites along with their English names in the Brainstorming part, for most Ss didn’t know the English names. Anyway, it was a successful lesson, in which every student has gained much more information and practiced their spoken English fully and freely.
