Goal Students’ improvement in reading ability and familiarity about cloning
Plan for the reading part
Teaching objectives
By the end of reading, Ss will be able to:
Language
1 state some information about pro-cloning
2 state some information about anti-cloning
3 use words and expressions such as desperate, adopt, declare, benefit, interfere with, with the intention of , show respect for, etc
4 anlyse some difficult sentences, such as:
a recent announcement by scientists that they have successfully cloned the first human embryo has caused much debate…and has shocked many people…
if I had the chance, I would have a cloned baby tomorrow.
While cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, some scientists are already pushing ahead with research …
Skills & strategies
5 form the habbit of reading questions first and using key words (such as, what, when , who, why, how…and so on ) before reading(Part A, C1, C2)
6 locate the origins of information quickly by skimming (Part A, C2)
7 guess the meanings of new words and scientific terms by scanning /fast reading.

9 get the main idea of each paragraph by finding out the topic sentences or summarizing.
10 tell true or false about the statements in Part C1 by skimming , scanning
11 get information, deal with information by using language when trying to finish task-based execises (Part C1,C2)
Culture & morals
12 know about the first cloned animal
13 know about the positive and negative or immoral aspects of cloning
14 judge what is moral or immoral in the world of cloning
Emotion & attitude
15 read passage actively with the intention of knowing about cloning, motivated by what they have had in their mind
Overview
The reading part consists of a newspaper article and two readers’ letters about different responds to cloning. It will firstly state the first successfully cloned human embryo and two different opinions about cloning. Then students will read about the first cloned animal and people who have different views about cloning. By skimming , scanning, and careful reading, students will take part in some task-based activities (Part A,B,C), to develop the right habbit of reading and form the useful reading strategy.
In Reading, Ss are supposed to get all-round information about cloning, such as opinions against cloning, and the ones for clonging etc. During this process, they are required to practice “skimming and scanning” reading strategies. Key words and expressions are to be reinforced in the second lesson of reading.

In general
1. Attach importance to reading strategy by answering the question: When was the first mamal cloned successfully
2. Put the two skills into practice by using them to deal with Part A and C2.
3. Read the passage by skimming, scanning and careful reading , tell and correct the answers in C1 by pairs.
4. Discuss and fill in the form in the graph to consolidate.
5. Homework: if I have a chance, what or who I will clone
(实例引出阅读策略“跳读和略读” 练习应用阅读策略“跳读和略读” 细读文章并交叉检查阅读效果 讨论并完成阅读信息表 巩固练习 布置作业)
In detail
Step 1 Lead-in (5’)
1. Here is a newspaper Hu Nan Daily. There are many pieces of news. Read quickly and then tell me what you have found just in one minute. One minute later, ask Ss to stop and ask some students to stand up.
S1: I read the sports part, and I know Yao Min played well in yesterday’s game.
S2: I read the shopping part, and I want to buy the electronic dictionary.
S3: I want to see the movie Ye Wen-2, because I like Chinese Konfu and zhen zhi dan…
Teacher: there are much information in newspaper or in our reading materials, when reading it, firstly, we should have a purpose to read, just as Student 1, he likes sports, so he reads sports part first. Student2 likes shopping . Student 3 likes movies, and he finds the name of the film as well as the main actor. All the things are done even in one minute. Here we just read the titles or the subtitles. When we find the title involved in our task, we read through or read again. Just reading the titles or subtitles is called skimming. And reading through or reading again is called scanning. Skimming and scanning are two important skills in reading.
2. let the students enjoy some pictures of cloned animals or people and think of the advantages and disadvantages of cloning.
Step 2 Skimming and scanning (3’)
Encourage the Ss to find out how useful these strategies are by assigning some small tasks. Here are some skimming and scanning questions based on specil time or names for students to locate information sources quickly. Nouns of time and name are key words.
1 Does the article give an anti- or pro-cloning point of view, or both (Q1,Part A)
2 What was the name of the first cloned mammal (Q2, Part A)
3 When was the first mammal cloned successfully
4 Who created Dolly
5 Did Ian Wilmut want to clone humans
6 Why dose Faye Wilson want to have a cloned baby
7 Is Severino Antinori anti or pro cloning
8 Is Pauline Carter pro- or anti- cloning (Q3, PartA)
9 Why dose Colin Jake want to clone his daughter
The teacher is supposed to accelerate the pace of asking questions as the activity moves on. In this way, the Ss can gain a strong sense of achievement.
Step 3 Reading comprehension (Reading in detail) (15’)
1. In the reading passage, there are many people who are pro-cloing and some people who are anti-cloning. Read the passage and find out the reasons why people are pro- or anti-cloning in the table on Page 44.
Pro-cloning Anti-cloning
1.produce valuable tissues and organs that could be used to save human lives. 1. may produce a real-life Frankenstein’s monster
2. cure diseases like cancer 2. create more disease in the animal
3. help those who are unable to have children 3. cloning shows no respect for human life
4. help those who want to clone their dead children 4. human life would no longer be unique
5. we should be having fewer babies in order to reduce Earth’s population, not cloning more
2. Read the statements in C1 and tell whether they are true or false. If it’s true , tick T ; if it’s false, tick F and correct it with your deskmate. Let the Ss do and then check the answers in class using PPT software.
3. Use some scientific terms to talk about a reading strategy----guess the meanings of scientific terms by reading the context.
Step 4 Discussion and matching (10’)
Time permiting, a discussion is to be conducted with its focus on the main idea of each paragraph. This step is aimed at students’ mastering of the whole passage , including the topic cloning and the structure of passage. The titles are out of order for the students to put them in right order:
1. ( ); 2.( ); 3.( ); 4.( ); 5.( ); 6.( ); 7.( ); 8.( )
A. Colin Jake’s letter and his pro-cloning attitude.
B. information about the first cloned animal Dolly.
C. a debate arose on an announcement about cloning.
D.some people who are against cloning and their opinions.
E. a pro-cloning person, Faye Wilson and her reason.
F. China’s efforts in cloning.
G. some people who want to clone humans.
H.Pauline Carter’s letter and his anti-cloning attitude.
Answers:1-8 CBDEGFHA

1. The interesting pictures of cloned humans and animals appealed to the students. The teacher’s explantion is a useful input of language for students.
2. Easy questions were answered by students who are weak in English, which enhanced their confidence.
3. Skimming is useful for students to get the main idea of the whole passage or a paragraph.
4. Scanning is useful when students are asked to match the title with the paragraphs, as well as when asked to guess the meaning of some scientific terms.

Teaching approaches
Testing Teaching Testing (TTT)
Teaching procedures
In general
Ss must have some difficulties in understanding the new words and expressions. Therefore, they are supposed to find the useful and difficult words, phrases or sentences by themselves, instead of waiting as a passive recipient, and learn to use them. To avoid losing control of the class, the teacher ought to monitor the pace of the process by listing their enumerations on the blackboard without comments and then moving on to a test, which focuses on the language points requiring to be dealt with in Reading. Then give Ss a test. The test will be a chellenge for Ss, which will motivate Ss to follow the teacher’s instruction. Later on, teach Ss the language points according to the test. This is a process of decoding the usage of important words and expressions. At last, to reinforce their learning, another test is to be given. The whole period goes in a pattern of “Test, Teach and Test”. Undoubtedly, the key to a successful fulfillment is the designing of the tests.( Yu Yanhong)

11) 很乐意做……(be delighted to do…)
Step 3 Teaching (14’)
Explain the answers to the test above. Here are the notes for reference:
1 advanced表示“先进的;进步的 ”
2 breakthrough表示“突破”。
3 intention 是intend(v. 打算)的名词形式,表示“意图”。
4 illegal是legal的否定形式,表示“非法的”;immoral是moral的否定形式,表示“不道德的”。
5 deliver 既有 “接生”的意思,又有“发表”的意思(当然还可表示“传送”等)。
6 beneficial (adj.
所以这里填while(见第11题)。
11 序数词如first等后面的定语一般用不定式形式(见第12题)。
12 end up 后面加上动名词或with sth. 所以本题选择B. replacing(见第13题)。
13 根据语境,这里应该填入一个表示“偶遇”的词而come across正是此意思。(见第14题)。
14 受中文思维的影响,学生往往会忘记so…that…结构中that引导的是结果状语从句必须要有主语(见第15题)。
Step 4 Testing (8’)
Complete the following summary.
Dear Editor,
I read your article about human__________ with great concern. I first heard of cloning animals from a single_________ when I went to a seminar about Dolly the sheep, who was ________ cloned was immoral. Why do some people think they have the _______ to go against nature Who will be responsible for the possible negative_________ If we interfere with nature, we might create problems. It seems that I was correct----your article says that Dolly died at a much _______ age than a non-cloned sheep.
Also , I cannot accept the idea of cloning _______ humans. We have no right to experiment with human life.
I believe that strict ______ should be put in place and governments should do more to stop human cloning. For example, the work of the ______ doctor, Severino Antinori, must be stopped . If I were the President of Italy, I would think about taking away his license.
Yours faithfully.
Wangl Lin
Answers: cloning, cell, successfully , immoral, right, consequences, younger, humans, laws, Italian
Step 5 Consolidation (10’)
Go through the homework of composition. Use the projector and the blackboard to present students’ composition and give a encouraging comment on each.
Step 6 Homework
1 Finish A1 & A2 on P106 if they are undone.
2 Read the article in Part A on Page 110 and use a full sentence to answer each question.
Feedback
Mine
1. The TTT(Testing-Teaching-Testing) method is better than my traditional method TT(Teaching-Testing). In the new form, students firstly meet with the challenging test which motivates their interest to deal with tasks. When they solve the problems successfully , they feel pleased, which in turn encourage them to do more exercises. On the other hand, if they have some problems unsettled, they will listen to teacher’s instruction with greater concern.
2. Using the red chalk, present Ss’ articles on the other blackboard and let all the Ss turn around , giving an encouraging comment (good structure, beautiful sentences or just some improvement).
All the above will give students a new and good feeling, which encourages them to write more.
