B
Visitors
still
stop
at
the
old
house
in
Scituate,
Massachusetts.
But
the
house
is
not
what
brings
them
there.
What
they
want
to
see
is
the
old
stone
well
beside
it—and
the
iron-bound
water
bucket
that's
put
on
its
edge.
Two
hundred
years
ago,
this
farmhouse
was
the
home
of
Samuel
Woodworth.
During
the
long
summers
of
his
childhood,
young
Samuel
would
often
pause
at
the
well.
It
was
a
welcome
break,
especially
on
a
hot
afternoon.
On
such
a
day
he
would
eagerly
draw
a
bucketful
of
cold
water
and
satisfy
his
thirst
with
a
refreshing
drink.
When
he
was
fourteen,
Woodworth
left
Scituate
for
New
York
City,
where
he
started
his
own
newspaper.
Later
he
worked
as
an
editor
at
other
newspapers
and
magazines
while
writing
novels,
plays,
and
poetry
in
his
spare
time.
His
life
was
busy,
and
he
rarely
had
time
to
visit
the
family
farm.
But
Woodworth
never
stopped
thinking
of
his
Scituate
home.
After
work
one
evening,
Woodworth
poured
himself
a
glass
of
city
water.
After
that,
he
remarked
to
his
wife,
Lydia,
how
wonderful
it
would
be
to
have
a
long,
cool
drink
from
the
oaken
bucket
at
his
father's
well.
Lydia
had
a
suggestion:
Why
not
put
it
to
poetry
It
was
a
suggestion
Woodworth
could
not
resist.
That
night
he
wrote
The
Bucket.
In
it
he
captured
the
world
of
his
childhood
on
a
hot
summer
day
and
the
simple
joy
of
stopping
for
a
drink
at
his
father's
well.
His
poem
was
an
instant
success.
It
seemed
to
touch
everyone
who
had
ever
been
homesick.
At
the
height
of
its
popularity,
The
Old
Oaken
Bucket
(as
it
came
to
be
called)
was
translated
into
four
languages,
and
the
words
were
set
to
a
popular
tune
of
the
time.
Over
the
years,
countless
people
have
read
or
sung
Woodworth's
ode
to
his
boyhood.
Today
it
is
the
official
song
of
Scituate,
Massachusetts.
(D)24.

does
the
author
use
flashback

understand

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In
my
experience
as
a
human
resources
manager,
many
job
applicants
are
unsuccessful
because
they
fail
to
prepare
for
interviews.
If
you
want
to
get
that
job,
you
must
do
your
“homework”!
36.__E__
It
is
essential
that
you
know
what
the
company
produces
or
sells,
who
its
customers
are,
its
size,
and
whether
it
has
recently
expanded
or
is
planning
to.
If
you
also
understand
the
culture
of
the
organization,
you
can
give
yourself
a
competitive
advantage
by
ensuring
you
are
“on

during
the
interview.
37.__D__
Look

words
like
“mission
statement”
and
“vision”
when
you
are

your
research;
that
is
where
you
will

them.
38.__B__You

what
exactly
the

will
involve,
what
sort
of

the
company
wants
and
how
your

will
fit
the

This
is
less
easy,
but
the
general
information
about
the
company
will
give
you
some
clues.
39.__A__There
are
so
many
websites
giving
information
about
different
occupations
that
you
are
sure
to
find
something
useful.
You
could
also
ask

job
that
you
could
talk
to.
Plan
for
the
questions

will
be
asked
and

your
answers.
40.__G__Have
a
look
at
these
and
think
about
how
you
would
reply.
Some
of
the
questions
will
be
quite
straightforward.
Others,
however,
are
tricky
and
could
catch
you
out
if
you
have
not
thought
them
through
ahead
of
time.
For
example,
you
might
be
asked,
“What
are
your
strengths
and
weaknesses?”
It
is
not
easy
to
give
an
honest
answer
to
the
“weaknesses”
part
without
sounding
negative
unless
you
are
well
prepared
in
advance.
A.
I

you
search
online
for
the
job
title.
B.
Get
information
about
the
job
itself.
C.
The
Internet
is
an
excellent
source.
D.
By
culture,
I
mean
the
company's
principles
and
ideals.
E.
Learn

much
as
you

about
the
employer.
F.

at
the
products
yourself.
G.
You
can
find
lists
of
questions
on
various
career
websites.
【语篇导读】本文主要介绍了如何准备应聘工作。
【解析】
36.段落主旨句。分析本文的结构可知,此处应为段落主题句。下文提到“It
is
essential
that
you
know
what
the
company
produces
or
sells,
who
its
customers
are,
its
size,
and
whether
it
has
recently
expanded
or
is
planning
to.”这些都是与公司相关的一些细节,是对E(尽可能地了解雇佣方的信息)进一步解读。
37.
细节支撑句。这一题比较难把握,必须先知道本段的主旨大意,再分析上下文,才能得出答案。本段主要讲尽可能了解雇佣方的信息,由“If
you
also
understand
the
culture
of
the
organization,...”可知后文主要涉及企业文化的信息,由“Look
out
for
words
like
‘mission
statement’
and
‘vision’
when
you
are
doing
your
research;...”可知它是通过举例子解释前一句,因此综合分析我们可知D正确。
38.
段落主旨句。分析本文的结构可知,此处应为段落主题句。“You
need
to
discover
what
exactly
the
job
will
involve,
what
sort
of
person
the
company
wants
and
how
your
skills
will
fit
the
position.”这一句是对前一句的进一步解读,由此可知B正确。
39.
细节支撑句。从该段的结构分析“You
could
also
ask
friends
if
they
know
anyone
doing
a
similar
job
that
you
could
talk
to.”给出如何获得信息的具体建议,“also”暗示上文还有一条建议,因此39空选择不难判断A正确。
40.
上下文过渡句。由本段主题句“Plan
for
the
questions
you
will
be
asked
and
practise
your
answers.”可知该段主要讲“应对用人方的提问”,所以G是最合适的。

Dear
Editor-in-chief,
Congratulations
on
the
96th
anniversary
of
Reader's
Digest!
I'm
a
regular
reader
of
your
magazine.
I
like
it
so
much
that
I
hardly
miss
any
copy.
There
are
many
advantages
of
Reader's
Digest.
Firstly,
Reader's
Digest
covers
health,food
and
culture.
By
simply
turning
the
pages,
I
can
know
all
important
things
in
a
family
life.
Besides,
the
Advice
Column
is
very
beneficial
to
adults,
since
it
gives
a
lot
of
practical
suggestions
to
parents
on
how
to
help
their
kids
to
grow
up
healthily.
In
a
word,
thanks
to
Reader's
Digest,
we
are
well-informed
and
learn
more
about
family
life.
As
a
teenager,
I
always
have
some
growing
pains.
Therefore,
I
wish
that
Reader's
Digest
could
provide
articles
for
the
young
children
to
help
them
get
through
their
struggles.
Finally,
I
hope
that
Reader's
Digest
will
become
better
and
better.
Thank
you
for
your
time!

It's
been

for

I
watched

tonight.
The
weatherman
said
the
rain
would
stop
by
tomorrow
evening.

M:
I'm
going

this
Sunday.
Would
you
like
to
come
W:
Oh,
Sunday's
a
bit
of
a
problem.
Some
of
my
friends
are
coming
for
a
dinner
at
my
place.
What
about
Saturday
Text

M:
What
a
great
concert!
I'm
so
glad
we
came.
I
love
that
band.
W:
Me,
too.
But
they
didn't
play
my
favorite
song.
That
was
pretty
disappointing.
Text
4
M:
Excuse
me.
But
I
sat
down
about
15
minutes
ago,
and
you
haven't
even
taken
my
drink
order
yet.
W:
Oh,
I'm
so
sorry,
sir.
We're
really
short
of
staff
today.
Tell
me
what
you'd
like,
and
I'll
bring
it
to
you
right
away...and
you
don't
have
to
pay!

M:
I
can't
believe
they
don't
have
our
tickets
here
at
the
box
office!
I
called
in
advance
to
remind
them!
What
a
waste
of
time
and
money!
W:
Honey,
be
patient.
The
man
said
they
have
them
in
the

He
just
has
to
go
and
get
them.

W:
Steven,
it's
me.
M:
What's
going
on
It's
the

W:
I'm
sorry
but
my
flight
didn't
land
until
very
late.
M:
Well,
take
a
taxi
home.
I
have
an
appointment
very
early,
so
I
need
to
rest.
W:
But
it's
raining
and
there
is
a
line
all
around
the
station
for
cabs.
It'll
take
me
at
least
an
hour
to
get
one
if
I
wait.
M:
OK.
I'm
coming.
It
should
take
me
35
minutes
or
so.
I
will
bring
you
an
umbrella.
W:
Dear,
I
won't
need
an
umbrella
then!
It's
pouring.
M:
OK.
I'll
bring
some
dry
clothes
for
you.
And
you
can
have
something
to
eat
when
you
get
home.

M:
Hello.
I'd
like
this
guidebook,
please.
How
much
is
it
W:
All
things
are
free
here.
M:
Oh,
thanks.
I'll
stay
in
the
city
for
one
week.
Could
you
tell
me
what
places
I
should
visit
W:
Well,
there
are
a
lot.
Are
you
interested
in
islands,
such
as
Lantau
M:
Islands
W:
Yes.
There
are
a
lot
of
interesting
things
you
can
see

old
villages
and
churches.
And
the
scenery
is
beautiful.
Take
this
booklet.
It
tells
you
more.
M:
Thank
you
very
much.
That's
a
great
suggestion.
W:
You
are
welcome.

Tina
W:
I
have
a
question
about
my
vacation.
How
many
days
off
have
I
earned
this
year
M:
Let's
see...So
far,
you
have
earned
five
days
off
this
year.
W:
Excellent.
That's
just
what
I
need.
M:
Would
you
like
to
put
in
a
request
for
that
now
W:
Yes,
I
would.
My
friends
and
I
have
planned
a
trip
to
New
Orleans
in
March.
M:
That's
a
good
time
to
go.
You
wouldn't
want
to
travel
during
hurricane
season.
W:
I
know.
It's
a
good
time
for
me
because
I'll
be
finished
with
the
project
that
you
give
me.
Also,
I
want
to
go
when
there
will
be
many
festivals
and
events.
M:
Sounds
fun.
Well,
here
is
the
form
you
need
to
fill
out.
It
must
be
signed
by
me
at
least
one
month
before
your
scheduled
vacation.
W:
That's
no
problem.
I'll
fill
it
out
now
so
you
can
sign
it
right
away.

W:
Good
morning,
sir.
How
can
I
help
you
M:
Hi.
I'm
looking
to
buy
a
new
computer.
W:
Do
you
need
a
desktop
or
a
laptop
M:
Oh,
I
work
from
home.
I
need
something
that
will
last.
W:
Well,
we
have
two
main
desktops
at
the
moment:
the
Alpha
and
the
Beta.
M:
What's
the
difference
between
the
two
W:
Well,
the
Alpha
is
designed
for
gaming
and
high
performance.
It
comes
with
a
large
screen,
while
the
Beta
is
more
for
the
average
worker.
It
is
very
basic
and
comes
with
a
smaller
monitor.
The
Alpha
is
our
best-selling
model
and
was
recently
written
about
in
The
New
York
Times
as
the
best
new
PC
of
2017!
M:
The
Alpha
sounds
great.
But
I
don't
play
games
too
often.
W:
Do
you
have
children
They
probably
play
games
and
would
love
to
see
you
bring
home
this
famous
computer.
They
have
probably
already
heard
about
it
from
their
friends.
M:
I
do
have
two
kids,
but
I
prefer
them
to
play
sports,
not
video
games.
W:
OK.
The
Beta
is
cheaper.
It
is
also
great.
M:
Well,
I
am
interested
in
basic
and
simple
things,
I
suppose.
Thanks
for
your
help.
I
will
take
a
look
around
and
come
to
you
when
I
make
up
my
mind.

Thanks
to
this
autumn's
above-average
rainfall,
California's
Death
Valley
National
Park
is
experiencing
a
super
bloom
of
wildflowers—a
rare
occurrence
that
happens
about
once
every
10
years.
Death
Valley
once
held
the
world
record
for
the
hottest
temperature—about
57
degrees
Celsius,
on
July
10,
1913.
Temperatures
peak
in
summer
and
cool
off
slightly
in
winter,
which
also
coincides
with
the
rainy
season.
The
Valley's
annual
rainfall
is
just
two
inches—sometimes
it
gets
no
rain
at
all.
But
this
year,
the
park
got
over
three
inches
of
rain
during
the
first
two
weeks
in
October.
The
above-average
rainfall
was
enough
to
cause
the
growth
of
millions
of
wildflower
seeds
that
have
been
dormant
for
years.
The
last
time
a
bloom
like
this
happened
was
in
2005,
and
the
time
before
that
was
in
1998.
The
show
won't
last
forever.
Most
of
the
flowers
will
fade
in
the
next
few
weeks
as
temperatures
start
to
rise.
Now,
the
best
flower
show
is
at
the
south
end
of
Death
Valley
National
Park,
along
Badwater
Road,
south
of
Furnace
Creek.
