Step 4 Reading strategy
Draw a conclusion about the reading strategies of skimming and scanning by Skimming: to get the general idea by looking at the titles and headings, the first and last sentences of paragraphs and the first and last paragraphs as well as pictures and charts.
Scanning: to find the detailed information by looking quickly for keywords and phrases, dates, numbers, etc. We don’t need to read the whole text word by word.
Step 5 Discussion
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad in groups of four.
Step 6 Summary and homework
What have you learnt in this class?
Finish Parts D and E

Reading School life in the UK
Analysis of Teaching Material (教材分析)
This reading text mainly introduces the British high school life about the aspects of school time, teachers and classmates, class size, subjects, homework, food and after-class activities from a Chinese student, Wei Hua’s experiences in the UK.
Analysis of Students (学情分析)
The students who graduated from Junior 3 and have just entered Senior 1 are curious about their own high school life as well as the high school life abroad. And they are to some degree familiar with some topics such as subjects, homework, school time and so on. All these will help come to the reading smoothly and lay good foundations for the comprehension and tasks.

1. Help students to learn more about the school life in the UK.
2. Train Students’ reading skills of skimming and scanning.

1. Skimming to get the general idea of the whole passage.

3. Careful reading to get the detailed information about the whole passage.
4. Listening and reading exercises to consolidate the comprehension of the passage.

1. Help them to know about the educational differences between China and Britain causes by different cultures and histories.

Step 1 Lead-in and Presentation (2 minutes)
A free talk about school life in China.
Show students some pictures about school life in the UK. And then tell them that we are going to read a passage by Wei Hua, who once studied in the UK as an exchange student, and know more about that.

Step 4 Reading strategy (3 minutes)

Skimming: to get the general idea by looking at the titles and headings, the first and last sentences of paragraphs and the first and last paragraphs as well as pictures and charts.
Scanning: to find the detailed information by looking quickly for keywords and phrases, dates, numbers, etc. We don’t need to read the whole text word by word.

Step 5 Discussion (6 minutes)
Ask the students to work in groups of four and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad.

Sum up what has been learnt in this period;
