Laughter is good for you
Ⅰ. Objectives
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Read a magazine article about stand-up comedy and two short plays.
2. Listen to an answering machine message and a radio talk show.
3. Discuss comedy and famous crosstalk performers
4. Write an e-mail about crosstalk
5. Perform a short play
6. Expand vocabulary used in play scripts
7. Share their opinions with each other
8. Experience joyful moments by watching fun stuff and feel interested in learning English.
9. Adopt a positive attitude towards life.
10. Take notes of new words and learn skimming skills via top-down approach.
11. Understand better of PRESENT TENSES and use them freely.
12. Read a speech script for a drama club and some idioms related to laughing and smiling.

Feedback
It will take some time for students to get back on the track after a long summer break. Getting everyone involved is always my style. 60% accomplishment is not satisfactory at all. For me, how to make a discussion heated and fruitful is something worth exploring all the time.
Period 1
Welcome to the Unit
Teaching aims:
1. Experience joyful moments by watching fun comic strip and feel interested in learning English.
2. Learn to read and discuss four respective posters.
3. Learn about the British sense of humour by reading an article in the workbook.
4.Talk about laughter and life positively.
5. Students learn to adopt a positive attitude towards life.

Procedure:
Step 1 Greetings and lead-in
1. When class begins, Teacher and students make briefly mutual greetings.
2. Mice story. (PPT presents 3 pictures: 2 mice and a cat.)
The cat looks around in alert and the little mouse runs for life. The bigger mouse smiles and says something.
①What is the dialogue about between them (Students try to guess it)
②Then PPT presents the words in bubbles.
Dialogue between the mice:
Little mouse: Mummy! Cat! Run, run, run!
Bigger mouse: (‘Take it easy, baby!’ in thought bubble) Miao~~~. I have told you thousands of times to learn a foreign language is very important!
Little mouse: I see, Mummy.
(Purpose: Students appreciate a piece of comic strip about mice and increase their vocabulary. Create a warm atmosphere so that students get interested in the lesson.)
3. Present a short media show of Qi Zhi and Da Bing( famous Hunan comedians).
①. Talking about the video and introducing the topic. Teacher asks students if they like the video and question about the video.
Questions:
a. Do you like this video of Qi Zhi and Da Bing
(Write crosstalk on bb.)
b. Have you ever seen any other show like this on TV
c. Do you like crosstalk
②. Teacher tells students about the topic of this lesson and how they’re expected to act in class. After that, Teacher tells students about the goals of this lesson.
③Goals of this lesson includes
a. enjoy fun stuff
b. discuss the posters on p.1
c. talk about laughter and life
d. read a passage about the sense of humour.
(Purpose: Students understand the goals of this lesson and know what they are expected to do during the following procedures.)
Step 2 Appreciation of some Famous comedians
1. Presents pictures of Xiao Shenyang, Pan Changjiang, Chen Peisi, Niu Qun, Feng Gong, Da Shan, Mr. Bean and Charlie Chaplin on the screen. Teacher asks students who they are and who they like best and why.
Questions:
①. Who are they
②. Of these comedians, who do you like best
③. What do Niu Qun and Feng Gong do together (repeat crosstalk)
(Purpose: This will arouse their knowledge of comedy and their impressions of the comedians, and serves as a preparation for the reading)
2. PPT presents pictures of Mr. Bean. Teacher asks students what they think of Mr. Bean.
3. Show some adjectives at the same time: funny, stupid, silly, strange …
(Purpose: Some students might not recognize Mr. Bean or Charlie Chaplin. It is a good way to encourage them to learn this information gap between western and Chinese culture.)
Step 3 Discussion of the four Posters
1. Now, please look at poster 1. PPT presents the poster and questions. Students observe the poster and answer the questions. (PPT presents new words help students.)
Questions on Poster 1:
a. What kind of expression is the man wearing
A funny facial expression.
b. Where is the man standing
In a spotlight, on stage.
c. What might he be saying
He might be telling a joke.
d. Where and when can you see the funniest man
At the Comedy Club this Tuesday at 9 p.m.
2. Focus on poster 2.
What do critics say about the book in the poster
(Read the poster carefully; find the answers on the poster)
3. Move to poster 3. PPT presents the poster and questions. Students observe the poster and answer the questions. PPT presents new words help students.
Question on Poster 3:
a. Can you name those Chinese comedians
b. What qualities do you think cross-talk comedians possess
A sense of humour is demanded.
Be quick-minded and able to cooperate well with his or her partners.
4. Talking about poster 4. PPT presents the poster and a question. Students observe the poster and have a group discussion on the question.
Question on Poster 4:
a. What can you see in a circus PPT shows new words help students.
New words: acrobats, riders, clowns and performing animals
b. Have you ever been to a circus
c. Do you think life in the circus is very interesting
(Purpose: Via talking about the four posters, students learn how to read pictures and find useful information from them.)
Step 4 Reading (input)
1. Skimming the passage on Page 104 for the main idea.
Students read the first paragraph, then the first sentence of the paragraphs in the middle and then read the last paragraph.
2. Checking students’ understanding.
Teacher asks students in which paragraph they can find information on different things that the British make fun of.
3. Detailed reading. Students read the text again and answer questions.
Questions:
a. What kind of people do the British like to make fun of
b. What jokes do they make about these people
c. What does Rowan Atkinson use to make people laugh
d. Why do people find Mr. Bean funny
e. Why is Mr. Bean popular in many countries around the world
Step 5 New vocabulary
1. Presents new words that the students have learnt today and see how many they can understand on the screen.
2. Repeat them one by one.
3. Students copy down the new words into their notebooks and try to remember them after class.
The words include:
cooperate, spotlight, crosstalk,
circus, clown, acrobat,
humour, humourous, sense of humour,
comedy, comedian, cheer sb up, get rid of
exaggerated expressions/movements
positive/negative attitude,
release one’s emotions
Purpose: Arouse the students’ awareness of vocabulary building.
Step 6 Life and laughter (output your own opinion)
1. Presents the sentences on the screen: Life is made up of laughter and tears. And tells students laughter is a bridge that can lead people to health, peace and happiness.
2. Then students talk about things that make people laugh. (Show some questions and key words on the screen for students.)
Questions
a. What makes you laugh
funny books, cross-talks, jokes, comedians, funny movies, humorous stories, …
b. What do you think of the comedians
They are talented, and dedicated. They have their own special ways of presenting vivid characters on the stage.
I think it is more than making people laugh. It is about conveying deep meanings of life while entertaining people.
c. In what way is laughter good for us
Laughter is good for our health and also for the mind.
3. Students do pair work and talk about why laughter is good for us.
4. Teacher collects answers from students, then explains more about the way laughter affects our health and mind. Get them to know why. Students learn to take a positive attitude towards life.
Step 7 Conclusion of this lesson:
All right, boys and girls. As the first period of this unit, this lesson serves as a warming up. Time is limited; let’s review what we’ve done in our first section. Four respectively posters are presented to you. These posters are for a stand-up show, a humorous book, a cross-talk course and a comedy. You are expected to be involved in a discussion and to practise your spoken English and share your opinions with your partners. The second section is a reading passage about the British sense of humour. You are expected to practise skimming skills while doing the reading. What have you got from our class
