Reading An adventure in Africa

Analysis of the teaching material( 教材分析):
The reading material of this unit is an informal letter about Toby’s travel plan with his brother. In the letter, Toby describes his trip to Africa in the coming summer holiday. A general introduction about their routes in Africa and adventure activities are presented. Equipped with background information about Africa, students are expected not only to grasp the main idea of the letter but also to improve their reading abilities , their creative, comprehensive and consolidating abilities as well.
Teaching objects( 教学对象): Students of Senior 1
Teaching Aims(教学目的)
1.Knowledge and Skills (知识和技能目的):
1). Train the students’ reading ability
2). Get the students to know the main idea of the text.
3). Develop the students’ creative, comprehensive and consolidating abilities.
2.Cultural senses(文化意识目的):
1). Help the students to know some beautiful scenery of different places in the world.
2). Help the students to know something about some countries in Africa.
3. Emotion and Values (情感及价值目的) :
Develop the students’ feeling of beauty and love of life and our hometown while enjoying the nice mountains and rivers in the world.
Teaching Important Points(教学重点):
Develop the students’ reading ability.
Teaching Difficult Points(教学难点):
1. How to make the students understand the passage better.
2. How to help the students finish all the excrcises.
3. How to help the students develop their creative, comprehensive and consolidating abilities.
Teaching Methods(教学方法):
1. Fast-reading method to get the general idea of the passage.
2. Careful-reading method to get the detailed information in the text.
3. Discussion after reading to help the students finish the tasks.
4. Acting to develop the students’ creative, comprehensive and consolidating abilities.

Teaching Procedures(教学步骤)
Step 1 Greeting.
Step 2 Free-talk and Lead- in (导入)
1. Enjoy a short film about the beautiful scenery and animals in Africa.
2. Enjoy some pictures .
3. Talk about adventure:
1) Definition of “adventures”:
unusual, exciting or dangerous experiences,
journeys or series of events
2) What to bring
Story books, candle, waterproof, matches, pocket knife, pan, compass, water purifying tablet, first aid kit, boots and parka…
3) Where to go
Africa ( Morocco—Sahara—Nile River—Kenya—Tanzania—Lake Victoria
4) What do you know about Africa
the second largest continent / black people/ deserts/ wild animals
Step 3 Fast--reading (快速阅读)
Go through the letter quickly and underline the places in the letter, and then answer these questions :
1. Who wrote the following letter
Toby
2. What animal is uncomfortable to sit on
Camel
3. How long will the author stay in Africa
About fours weeks
Step 4. Careful reading and do exercises (精读)
1) The students are supposed to draw the traveling route .
London---( by plane)---Morocco---(on camel)—Sahara Desert---( go white-water rafting)---Kenya—- Tanzania ( climbing Mount Kilimanjaro)
2).Read the letter again and put the activities in the correct order according to Toby’s plan for the trip.

What to take: tents/ sleeping bags/ a torch

2).Para.3 Lake Victoria Ask the two questions:
1).What adventure activity will the writer try and why
White water rafting/the water actually gets quite rough
2).How to protect himself
Wear waterproof, a helmet and a life jacket
3).Para.4-5 Fill in the blanks:
In ________ , they’ll live with the ______ people in their villages , and eat and drink _________ they do , including cow’s _______. (Keys: Kenya, local, whatever ,blood)
They’ll walk across the land, following the __________ of big animals such as elephants, lions and_________. (Keys: footprints, giraffes)
Step 6 Consolidation (巩固)
Recite Toby’s traveling route in Africa according to the traveling route in Step 4 with their books closed.
Step 7 Moral training (德育渗透)
Show some beautiful landscapes of our hometown and pictures taken in our school to make the students love our hometown as well as our school.. Work hard to reach their goals.

2. Which place do you like to visit in a foreign country Route Activities
Step 9. Sum up (小结)
