the sound of the artillery shells
jumping into the water
how you felt when you reached the beach
what you did next
who you met when you got off the beachlead-inI remember seeing fires in the distance.
I remember that the house shook.
If I remember rightly, we weren’t supposed to do that.
The first thing I remember was the sound of the planes.
I’ll never forget hearing that sound.Useful expressionTalking about memoriesI was part of the invasion force at the D-Day landings. I’ll never forget the sound of the artillery shells as we approached the beach in France. Next we had to jump into the water. It was cold, but fortunately not too deep. When we reached the beach I was terrified. The German soldiers were shooting at us and there were not many places to hide. Sample writingI remember seeing many of my friends killed and wounded. We then tried to get off the beach by running left and right. It was difficult with a heavy pack.Sample writingAnd I’ve never forgotten how relieved I felt when I got to the first sand banks and could rest for about twenty minutes. I was with a group of about seven other soldiers from my company. The first thing we saw when we got off the beach was another company, so we joined that, and started the long fight to Paris. I will never forget the things that happened to me on 6th June 1944.Sample writingTo remind people of the importance of peace and of how terrible war is, or rather, to learn lessons from the history, war films are shown to us from time to time in the post-war era. lead-inHave you seen any war films? It has been exhibited both as a theatrical release and as a TV miniseries, and in several different home video versions of various running times.Sample
WritingDas Boot The film is set during World War II and tells the fictional story of U-96 and its crew. It depicts both the excitement of battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt, and shows the men serving aboard U-boats as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country. Sample
WritingDas Boot The story is told from the viewpoint of Lt. Werner who has been assigned as a war correspondent on the German submarine U-96 in October 1941. He meets its captain, chief engineer, and the crew in a raucous (喧闹的) French bordello (妓院). Thomsen, another captain, gives a rude drunken speech to celebrate his Ritterkreuz award (骑士十字勋章), in which he openly mocks not only Winston Churchill but implicitly Adolf Hitler as well.Sample
WritingDas Boot The worn-out U-boat crew looks forward to returning home in time for Christmas, but the ship is ordered to advance on Italy. After a long struggle, the crew is pale and weary upon reaching their hometown on Christmas Eve. Shortly after the wounded navigator is taken ashore to a waiting ambulance, allied planes bomb and strafe (猛烈炮轰) the facilities, wounding or killing many of the crew. After the raid, the U-boat sink at the dock. Just after the boat disappears under the water, the captain collapses and dies. Sample
WritingDas Boot Although we all condemn the immoral war-maker —Nazi Germany, we are shown the courage and humanity of German soldiers in a true-to-life manner in this film. Sometimes, we are shocked and moved by such feelings as boredom, loneliness, fear, despair and destruction that these men are experiencing. It’s said that of the 40,000 U-boat men, 28,000 is killed in World War II. Surely, war is a killer machine, whatever good or bad guys.Sample
